How ECLIPSE sections relate to the equation

Static Reservoir Description

The type of model geometry depends on several factors, including: Extent of the area to be modeled, number and spatial distance between wells . Level of detail required in the study Complexity of faulting, spatial distance between faults Existence of no-flow boundaries and baffles Permeability variation with depth Time available for model construction.

PVT and Rock Data

PVT data are the results of laboratory analysis of reservoir fluids. These data are required to: describe the phase behavior of reservoir fluids at all times calculate the density of each phase, which is in turn sets up the initial conditions of the simulation and calculates the mass of each phase in each grid block for material balance purposes. The fluid PVT properties can vary with depth and/or aerially as well as being different in distinct regions of the reservoir.

Initialization Data

Well Data
Well data are presented in two different forms depending on whether the simulation is a history match or a prediction. In history matching, the engineer supplies measured phase production rates on a well by well basis and infers reservoir characteristics. In prediction, the reservoir characteristics are taken as the best available and the engineer optimizes the production subject to economic and facilities constraints. In history matching, the wellhead locations are specified as well as completion data and measured phase injection and production rates.

ECLIPSE data file format

RUNSPEC Section
The RUNSPEC section has three functions: Sets the start date of the simulation. Defines the basic character of the model. Allocate memory (RAM) for: Simulation grid Wells Tabular data Solver stack.

GRID Section
ECLIPSE does not use grid cell dimensions and properties for the calculation of fluid flows. Instead, the cell pore volume and transmissibility are used. The main purpose of the GRID Section is to provide ECLIPSE with the information necessary for the calculation of cell pore volume and transmissibility in all directions.
