Determination of the Extraction Yield

The extraction yield is a measure of the solvent efficiency to extract specific components
from the original material. In the case of canola, it will give an idea about the
extractability of phenolics under different solvents.

It could be calculated according to the method of Zhang, Bi, and Liu (2007) as following:

1. Extract 10 g of the defatted canola sample using 70% methanol (you may use
different solvents to compare). The final volume will be 250 ml.
2. Evaporate the extract to dryness by the rotary evaporator under vacuum at 40°C.
3. Lyophilize the dried product in the freeze-dryer to obtain a freeze-dried extract.
4. Weigh the freeze-dried extract.
5. Calculate the extraction yield as the percentage of the weight of the crude extract
to the raw material (10g).
6. Extraction yield (%) = (weight of the freeze-dried extract x 100) / (weight of the
original sample).
