Fatty Arteries Date: 3/13/14 Class: KIN 355 Grade 5-6 Time: 9:10am Term: Spring Targeted NASPE

E Standard(s):

Teacher: Keli Hammond School: Spartan Elementary Equipment: 6-8 kickballs. 1 giant ball. Soccer net (if available to catch the balls)

Specific Objective: By the end of this lesson, the students will be able to better understand that a diet low in fat and cholesterol helps to prevent build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries which can restrict blood flow. The students will then be able to answer the same questions for review at the beginning of our health lessons the following day. This will be assessed by asking these specific questions at the end of the lesson and at the beginning of our next lesson as well as completing a questions on a quick quiz. Concomitant Objective: Students will practice kicking control and accuracy by attempting to kick a ball in a specific direction and at specific targets. Time

Transition: Clap once if you can hear me. Clap twice if you can hear me. - When I say go, students put their toes on the green line - Set induction given there. Positive Pinpointing!! Set Induction: 45 - With toes on green line Seconds - How many of you like fast food? What kind of foods do you get? Are fast foods usually healthy choices? Why? **Looking for someone to mention they are high in fat. Guide if necessary** - In class, weve been talking a lot about the importance of choosing healthy foods to keep our bodies healthy. Today, we are going do an activity that shows us why we should not eat foods that have a lot of fat. - Explain Learnable Piece 30 Learnable Piece: ((Some prior knowledge is needed for Seconds this lesson. Can be introduced in class, but for time constraints we are going to pretend we already did that) - When we breathe, what do we get that we need? **Oxygen** - How does oxygen travel through our body **Blood vessels, arteries, etc.** - Our activity today will show us how blood travels through our arteries and how fat can affect how that blood travels.

Transition: - First, we need to count off by twos. - Ones, raise your hand. When I say go, walk and line up on this line facing the wall. Keep your self arms length away from your neighbors. GO - Twos, when I say go, you will line up on this line facing the ones. Also keep yourself arms length from your neighbors. GO Presentation of New Material/Directions: - You are now the walls of our artery. You are 6-8 going to use your kicking skills to push the blood kickballs from this end of the artery all the way to the other end and into the soccer net which is our heart. The goal is to keep the blood cells in the walls of the artery and work together to get them to the heart. To do this, we need to control our kicks and work as a team. Try to make sure that everyone gets a chance and kick the ball to the person across from them. We do not need to kick them really hard or fast, just really accurately. SAFETY: o Watch out for your neighbors! o Be aware of the balls being kicked towards you. o Try to keep the balls on the ground so they dont accidentally jump up and hit someone. Checking for Understanding: Are there any questions? Round #1 o Students work together to get the balls down the aisle and into the net with no blockages Round #2 Add blockages (Giant Ball) o Now we are going to do the same thing, but this time, we are in an artery that has a lot of fat built up. The giant ball represents a big ball of fat that has built up inside the artery. (May need someone to hold the ball in place) Work as a team and try to get the balls into the net. (work the other way down the line. Maybe have two students move the net to the other side?

Possible Modifications: - If large ball is not available, use student blockades where two students stand still and everyone else needs to get the balls past them - Could add more blockages, more blood cell balls Lesson Review/Checking for Understanding: - Questions: o Which was more difficult? Getting the balls into the net without the big ball or with it? o Do you think it is easier for our bodies to pump blood if there is a lot of fat stored in our arteries? o What do you think can happen if your body isnt pumping blood very well? **Heart attack, stroke, etc.** o How can we prevent fat from building up in our arteries? **Low Fat Diet** o Also, it is important to remember that it takes a while for fat to build up in your arteries, so dont worry too much if you have a cheeseburger now and again. Its when you have high fat foods all the time that fat can build up in your body and cause problems. - Great job today everyone! (applause)
