Differential Pressure Flowmeters Differential Pressure Flowmeters, as the name suggests, measure the change in pressure across a special

flow element. This type of flowmeter is widely used since differential pressure measurement is a universal flow measurement for liquids, gases and vapors. Estimates are that over 50 percent of all liquid flow measurement applications use this type of unit. Differential pressure flow meter always provides accurate results even with large bores, high temperature and extreme pressure. In the flow of fluids along pipes, differential pressure flowmeters introduce a constriction in the pipe that creates a pressure drop across the flowmeter. When the flow increases, more pressure drop is created. Impulse piping route the upstream and downstream pressures of the flowmeter to the transmitter that measures the differential pressure to determine the fluid flow. This type of flowmeters use Bernoulli's equation to measure the flow of fluid in a pipe. Bernoullis equation states that the pressure drop across the constriction is proportional to the square of the flow rate. Thus, the basic operating principle of differential pressure flowmeters is based on this premise. The flow rate is obtained by measuring the pressure differential and extracting the square root.
