Description

Students are divided into pairs or groups of three. The students are then given a reading selection with designated stopping points. The students will read silently to the first stopping point and then say something to each other about what they have just read. Students may ask questions, make comments, or summarize on their own, or the teacher may choose to give them a specific prompt for each stopping point. Once all students have reached the end of the reading selection, they will discuss what they have read as a whole class.

Content Application
French: Students will be paired off and assigned a story to read out of their Petit Nicolas books. 4-5 stopping points (depending on the length of the story) will be written on the board. Students will read to the given stopping point, then turn to their partner. Student 1 will summarize what they have read so far, and Student 2 will predict what will happen next. When the reach the next stopping point, they will switch roles. Once they have finished reading the story, we will discuss it as a class. Students should strive to use new vocabulary words in discussion. All discussion should be in French.

Say Something
Intelligence Style
Verbal-Linguistic: Students must read for information, then express their thoughts about the reading aloud both to their partner and to the whole class. Interpersonal: Students will react to what they have read by discussing it with their partner or partners, and later by discussing it with the whole class. Intrapersonal: Students will read to a given stopping point in the selection, then take the time to reflect on what it means to them and sort through their personal thoughts about what they have just read before sharing.

Modifications
Students will be asked to make a statement about what they have read so far, as well as formulate a question for their partner at each stopping point. Their question should be related to what they have been reading but may also be more personal (ex. If you were Nicolas parent, how would you react? Would you have been friends with Nicolas as a child?) Students will be asked to point out a word that they have never read before and try to define it.
