Description

For this strategy, students are given piece of paper with 6 or 8 boxes on it. Each box corresponds with a section of the reading they are about to do. Students will read over or listen to the given selection and jot down notes about each section is the appropriate box. Once they have filled all the boxes, students will discuss what they have read with a small group.

Content Application
Social Studies: Students will read a passage about the construction of churches in the Middle Ages. The passage will be broken up into 6 sections which correspond with the students windowpane sheet. Students may read the passage as many times as they would like. They must put something in each box to represent that section of the passage. They will be given 15 minutes to read and take notes. After the times is up, students should get into groups of 4 and share their thoughts on what they have read.

Modifications

Verbal-Linguistic: Students will read and listen carefully to gain understanding of the given passage. Interpersonal: Students will discuss the reading with a small group once they have taken notes. Visual-Spatial: Students may choose to represent what they have learned by drawing.

Students will be reading the same passage as above. However, for these students it will not be broken into 6 sections. Students will have to separate it into 6 sections on their own. They will then fill in the boxes with drawings or short phrases which will help them to remember what the passage was talking about. Students will get into small groups when they are done with their notes and share their thoughts on the passage. Students will also share how they broke up the passage.

Low

Students will be read the passage once. they will then be given a copy of the reading and a windowpane notesheet. Students will then take notes on the 6 sections and share their thoughts with a small group of peers.
