Abbreviated Group Meeting Form (for Opening Meetings or Group Meetings) Date: Sept. 30 Day: _Tuesday________________
Planned Group Experience: We will be going on a nature walk to find bugs. Our week has been focused a lot of animals and bugs. In the future we will be looking at animals and their colors. This will be a good way to open that topic up. To investigate bugs, to explore nature and bugs, and to use cameras
Introduction to Planned Group Experience: We will begin the activity by going over the book we read the day before, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Then we will talk about bugs and insects. I will ask the students if they have ever seen a real caterpillar. We will discuss where caterpillars are found and what other things are found with caterpillars. We will discuss insects and bugs. We will talk about their homes. Then we will talk about finding them.
Questions: What color are the bugs you are finding? What do bugs eat? Where do we find bugs and why do you think this is? What kind of bugs are we looking for?

ECE 362 Field Trip Lesson Plan Kirby Science Center Sarah Flatten, Sara Baldwin, and Derek Bultje 1. The project that the children are currently engaged in is creating rivers. The topic that may be enhanced would be erosion of land over time. We hope that they gain a better understanding of the impact water has on land features. 2. We will be taking our nine children on this field trip. Letters will be sent home to the parents explaining our field trip and requesting permission for their child to go. These letters will be sent home two weeks in advance. A reminder letter will also go home three days before our trip. The three teachers will go on the trip. Parent volunteers will not be asked for, as there is limited seating in the van, but if they ask to join us we will make accommodations for them to join us. If only the nine children and three teachers go, we will fit in a one 12 passenger van. We will go on a Thursday so we have a week to remind and prepare the children. We would leave at 1:00pm and arrive at the Kirby Science Center around 2:00pm. We hope to spend about 2 hours exploring as a group and listening to a presentation or tour. When we leave we will pass out snacks on the van to eat on the way home. We will arrive back to Brookings at about 5:15pm. 3. a)We will take the interstate 29 to Sioux Falls. Then we will take 12th street, exit 79 and turn left onto 12th street. We will then follow SD-42 E. Next we will turn right onto South Main Ave. 301 S Main Ave will be on the right hand side. Prior to leaving, we will map quest directions for the person driving. The lengthy construction zones and bust travel times when we are returning home will be tomes of potential danger. These are things that the driver will need to be aware of. We will park on the ramp across the street from the Pavillion and the children will pair up and cross the street. The teachers will spread out amongst the students and help
them cross safely. One of the teachers will carry a backpack with a copy of the students contact information and a cell phone. b) We will arrange to have a short tour and presentation before we get there. When we call to make arrangements we will share the age of the children we are bringing and request to have someone who can relate to them give the presentation and be our tour guide. c) We will stay on the third floor of the center because it most closely relates to our topic, more specifically, the erosion table. We would ask for somebody from the Kirby Science center to give us a presentation on erosion. d) We will not spend time on the second and fourth floors because they do not relate to our topic and we have limited time. e) We will take note of the things that children are interested in while exploring the level and may use them in the future. Many of the exhibits would be useful at some point because they cover so many topics, especially the bees and space. f) We will bring paper, pencils, and clipboards for the children to note their observations. The teachers would also have digital cameras and video recorders to document the experience. We will have the children look at these when we return. We would also need change for pay for parking and money for admission. We are a group of 12 or more, so we would pay $4.00 each. We would possibly also have to pay for the presentation and the tour. g) The bathrooms are located in the hall behind the dinosaur. They are in this spot on each floor. On the first level they are across from the stairs. 4. a) Before we leave we will look at books about erosion. We will ask them to think about how water affects land. We will also discuss appropriate behavior, for example, stay with the rest of the group, walk, use inside voices, and remain seated in the van.
b) We will keep extra clothes in the van along with a first aid kit, map and directions, a calming cd, and some books for them to loot at. Perhaps the books will be the ones we will use to talk about erosion. c) Children who arrive more than 5 minutes past 1:00pm will stay with the rest of the class as will those children who cannot go at all. If a child becomes uncontrollable, they will receive one on one attention with a teacher and be removed from the group until they are ready to come back and behave appropriately. 5 a) We will arrive back home as close to 5:15pm as possible. The teachers will take the children outside to play until their parents arrive to pick them up. b) Back at the classroom we will put sand and water in a sloped sensory table so that they can explore further. We could research and investigate other rivers and forms of erosion. Then we could compare and contrast the two.
