Miss Williams List of Fabulous iPhone/iPad Apps!

During our center time, we use many wonderful educational apps in the classroom! The list is organized into literacy, math, and fun (colouring, puzzles, etc.) apps. Some apps are for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch; and some are just for the iPad. All the apps are free, although some have add-ons that can be purchased. The students LOVE using the apps in the classroom and would probably love using them at home as well! iPad only apps: literacy: ABC Magnetic Alphabet Lite- digital magnet board that allows students to experiment with letter play and word building. Articulation!- This app has matching games, stories, and flashcards for many different letters/letter combinations in the alphabet. The app even allows the child to record themself saying the words as a way to check their letter and word recognition! This is one of my favourite apps we have. ABC writing: This app provides uppercase and lowercase letters for the student to trace, and also shows a picture of an object that starts with that letter. The free version of this app features the letters a-h, but there is also a full version available. Toontastic: This app allows you to create your own cartoon. The child can choose their setting, characters, and background music. Once they have chosen how their story will look they can record their story and move the characters around the screen. The app saves the voice recording and the movements so you can watch your cartoon once its complete. This is a fun way for students to practice creating and sharing narrative stories! Math Apps:

123 Writing: Students can practice printing the numbers 1-7 on this free app. There is also a full version that includes more numbers. The students can practice printing the numbers, and count objects that match the number they are printing. Fun apps: Disneyland: This app takes you on a virtual tour of Disneyland. It explores each area of the park where students can watch videos, play games, listen to stories, etc. This is one of the students favourite new apps! Puzzle HD- This app has 9 free animal puzzles. iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch apps: literacy: ABC Magic 2- This app has pictures that correspond with each letter of the alphabet, and the words that go along with each picture are read aloud to the child. Spelling Bee- This app has pictures and scrambled letters that can be used to spell the word that corresponds with the picture. There are different levels, the first level has 3 letter words. This app is very useful for children who are already familiar with their letter sounds. Little Writer: The Tracing App for Kids- This is one of my favourite apps! It allows children to practice tracing capital letters, small letters, numbers, shapes and words. The app provides dots for the child to trace, and stops them if they are not printing the letters in the right direction. Toy Story- This app tells an interactive story based on the movie Toy Story. There are pictures that move as the story is read aloud, and the words are highlighted as they are read to encourage the child to follow the words as they read. Goodnight Safari- Another interactive story based on animals in the savannah. This app also reads aloud and highlights the words. At the

end of each page, the child can touch the animals on the screen to watch them move. Letter Quiz: This app allows students to match uppercase letters and lowercase letters, as well as practice printing their letters. This is a great app for students to use to improve their letter recognition. The free version features some letters in the alphabet, but there is also a full version available. Going Places: This app has 6 stories that allow students to explore various social outings. Some of the stories are based on going to a restaurant, going to the doctor, and going to the playground. Each story is read aloud and features photographs for illustrations. The stories model behavior in various social settings. Hallmark Gift Books- Watson: As you may have heard, we have a stuffed raccoon in our class named Watson who is able to respond to his storybooks. Hallmark also offers an app for Watson, where students can read his story, make Watson puzzles, and spot the differences in Watson pictures. Watson has quickly become a beloved member of our classroom and the students seem to love anything that has to do with Watson! Sight Words Flashcards: This app has flashcards for pre-primary, Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 sight words. Each card has a sight word and a picture. There is an all in one option which combines all grade levels. This is a great app to supplement the flashcards that I sent home. Rhyming Bee: This app allows you to choose 2 sound combinations to practice rhyming. There are 2 flowerpots with pictures of items that end in the sounds that were chosen. The student has to drag each word to the correct flowerpot based on the sound at the end of the word. Ice Land!: Students can use this app to practice spelling basic words. They can drag letters to match the letters on the screen in order to spell words such as dog, pen, etc. The app provides the option of registering in order to track your childs progress. There are letter and phonics sections available for purchase.

Candy Count- This app allows children to use candy to sort and count objects. Toy Tangram- Children can use this app to build puzzles by using tangrams, which introduce them to 2D shapes. Hungry Fish- This is a very interactive app that allows children to practice number recognition as they feed the fish. The fish has a number on his belly and the child has to feed him the number bubbles that have the same number. Difficulty one is number matching, and difficulty two has beginning addition. This is a very engaging app that the students really enjoy! Awesome Eats- This app shows children examples of healthy food while also allowing them to practice their sorting! Different vegetables are coming off of conveyer belts, and the child has to move the items to the correct belts for each vegetable. This app will allow students to practice their counting and shape recognition. Easy Match: Students can practice subitizing (recognizing a set of objects at a glance) by matching numerals to dominoes. The goal is for your child to be able to recognize how many dots are on a domino without having to count them. Savannah!: This app is similar to the Ice Land! App for literacy. The free version allows students to practice putting numbers in order. The game involves a frog hopping across lily pads to get across a pond. Each lily pad has a number, and the student has to make the frog hop in the

correct order. There are Count and Calculate sections available for purchase. All In One Apps Lunchbox: This app features a monkey that takes the student through many different mini-games. The mini-games ask the student to recognize shapes, letters, and colours through matching and puzzle games. After every few mini-games the student is given a sticker to place on a virtual sticker board. This has been one of the favourite apps amongst the students, and it allows them to practice many different skills all at once! Just for Fun Apps: Princess Colouring Book- Provides different princess colouring sheets. Colouring Book Free: Animals- Provides different animal colouring pages. Crayola LLC!- This is another one of my favourite apps! The child can take a picture of themself, and then the colour is vacuumed out of the photo to turn it into a colouring page! Tap A Tune- This app provides a fun way for students to explore the sounds that different instruments can make.
