Terence H. Matthews
Chairman, Mitel

Terry Matthews is Chairman of Mitel, a leading edge provider of next generation IP (Internet Protocol) communications solutions and a market leader for voice, video and data convergence. Prior to launching Mitel, Terry served as CEO and Chairman of Newbridge Networks Corporation, a company he founded in 1986. He was instrumental in maintaining the dynamism and vision of Newbridge from its formation and built the company into a leader in the worldwide data networking industry. When France-based Alcatel acquired Newbridge in May 2000, the company employed more than 6,500 people worldwide and recorded FY 1999 revenue of $1.8 billion. Before the creation of Newbridge, Terry co-founded Mitel Corporation in 1972. Under his leadership, Mitel grew quickly to become a world leader in the design and manufacture of enterprise voice systems and products. In 1985, British Telecom bought controlling interest in Mitel. Terry holds an honors degree in electronics from the University of Wales, Swansea and is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers and of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He has been awarded honorary doctorates by several universities, including the University of Wales, Glamorgan and Swansea, and Carleton University in Ottawa. In 1994, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. In the 2001 Queens Birthday Honours, he was awarded a knighthood. Terry is also the founder and principal investor in Celtic House International, an early stage technology venture capital firm with offices in Canada and the United Kingdom. Celtic House invests in companies that specialize in telecommunications, storage, networking and Internet infrastructure. In addition, Terry serves as chairman of a number of high technology companies including Convedia Corporation, DragonWave and Tundra Semiconductor Corporation. He is Chairman of the Celtic Manor Resort in Wales, which was recently chosen as the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup Golf tournament of teams representing the USA and Europe.
