Focus and Review Description of Activities and Setting Before the students start researching, I will ask them to recall the interdependent yarn activity we did yesterday in class. I will ask them to explain what a natural resource is, as well as an import and export. Remember yesterday during our interdependent yarn activity, we went over the different types of imports and imports found in various countries and how they affect one another? Today we are going to take a look at North Carolina specifically and research the natural resources and exports found in our state. We will start the lesson with a PBL (Problem Based Learning) activity. Students will be called to the carpet with their social studies notebooks. You are working for the governor of North Carolina. You have been appointed to entice new businesses into our state. You will create a visual aid of the natural resources and goods found in North Carolina. Turn and talk with your neighbor about what you know and what you need to know about the PBL presented to you, and make a list in your notebooks. Next I will call on a few students and write their responses on a tchart displayed on the smartboard. After that I will display a scenario for the students to work on as their guided practice. The students will be placed in predetermined groups of four (one group of five), which will be communicated to them when they get back to their seats.
