Students will be able to list the 7 elements of a civilization b. Students will be able to think like an archaeologist by extrapolating information for an artifact c. Students will identify examples of elements of a civilization from the artifact d. Students will analyze their current civilization and identify the specific elements of their civilization Anticipatory Set: a. Ancient Mesopotamia Song by Mr. Nicky Purpose a. I am learning about the elements of a civilization so I can better understand the creation and characteristics of civilization b. I am extrapolating information from an artifact so I can learn how archaeologist study the past c. I am listing elements of my civilization so I can better understand the similarities and differences between the past and present Input a. Task Analysis i. Students will come into class while Ancient Mesopotamia Song is playing in the background. The lesson will start when students are asked what they think elements of a civilization are. Afterwards, the book Weslandia will be read on the smart board. Half way through the book, the class will be asked to partake in Concept Flash Cards for assessment. Following the formative assessment, I will finish reading Weslandia. After the reading I will pass out a sheet that gives the students the 7 elements of civilization. Then I will go back through the book and highlight examples of the story that fit into their respective elements. Then I will pass out placard of wood cut and students will extrapolate information from the images to find the elements of civilization for Mesopotamia. In the middle of this activity the students will do the white board formative assessment and list one element of civilization they found and why they think it belongs to that element. At the end the last formative assessment for the lesson will be Transfer and Apply. In this they will not only reflect on the material in class but their own lives.
