Chameleon Elementary School Demographics Chameleon Elementary is a school of 490 students located in a small town in Jackson County, Kansas. The school holds all Kindergarten through 5th grade for the entire district. Many of the students in this predominantly white school live in a rural setting. Due to a growing manufacturing industry, the area is experiencing an influx of lower income families in the trailer park on the edge of town. The school has achieved Standard of Excellence in Reading and Math building-wide the past two years and Science this past school year.

Books and Materials While state testing scores have been good at Chameleon Elementary, library materials purchased this year will strive to ready the school for the approaching Common Core State Standards. Support of improving scores in science will also fall under this focus. The current collection was just weeded for the first time in seven years. Many outdated titles were removed as well as a large number of popular books in poor physical condition. Titles with up-to-date information will be sought and popular titles will be replaced. A very small collection of eBooks and audiobooks will be expanded to allow students to experience content in a variety of ways and accommodate different learning styles. Due to a lack of library aides and in order for the librarian to use time as effectively as possible, full processing will be ordered whenever possible. Mathematics and English Language Arts standards referenced are Common Core Standards; Science standards referenced are Kansas State Standards.

McCoy 8 Library Furniture Similar to the collection, the aim of this years library furniture budget is to replace worn out items and update the library. A new carpet was chosen for the story time corner. It has 30 squares in its design, allowing the librarian to assign each child a specific place to sit during story time and accommodate the largest class size. Due to a complete lack of display furniture, an assortment of easels and risers were chosen to allow for the highlighting of library materials, whether new, on a specific topic, or as part of a celebration. Cohen Foundation Grant While several students own and use eReaders, Chameleon Elementary does not currently own or checkout any. In order to ensure equity of technological access for all students, the Cohen Foundation Grant will be used to purchase eleven 16 GB iPod Touch devices. Students will be able to read and listen to eBooks and audiobooks from the school library as well as eBooks and audiobooks from the state and local public libraries on the iPods. These devices can also be used for educational apps and programs. The entire district switched over to Macintosh several years ago, so these devices will be compatible with every computer in the school. The librarian will develop a checkout system for these devices that maximizes student exposure. Item iPod Touch 4 Generation 16GB Shipping Quantity of 11
