Portfolio Artifact Rationale Statement Video #1 High School World History Context and Connection to Educational Frameworks This

video shows work from my first field assignment. As I am a full-time social studies teacher in a private school, this field work was completed in my classroom. The students are freshmen in a World History class and they have been identified as students who may struggle academically in the transition to the traditional college-prep curriculum at MUHS.. The class is designed to offer students extra support in developing study skills by organizing them into a small class size (15 instead of the average of 22 students in the building) and giving them an opportunity to collaborate with each other and the teachers during study hall. Typically 30 students are chosen for this program annually and the school has been encouraged that this has helped with retention rates. This lesson is heavily influenced by the theories associated with Blooms taxonomy. The students are working on creating a basic understanding of concepts related to causes of the world wars and then they build on their understanding by making meaningful connections to current events. The students have an opportunity to learn from each other and from the feedback that I give them throughout the process to support them to think more critically about the complexities of war. The variety and the connections to current events provide evidence that the experiences are more meaningful than if they simply read text independently. the semester to support their comprehension of the text. The activity shown on the video is also evidence that students are engaged in strategies that I chose to support them with the material. Many of the students are non-traditional learners and they are immersed in a very traditional environment. This lesson is evidence that I can identify skills that need to be matched with appropriate strategies to help the students improve.
