Oefinger MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow from the vinegar, through the membrane, into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. There is 95% of water in the vinegar and there is 74% percent of water in the egg .The vinegar with dissolves the shell membrane and the water from the vinegar with flow through the egg. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14.0 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 275 OBSERVATIONS 25ml bubbles are collecting on the egg and then floating upward The egg was very squishy The egg shell completely dissolved 250ml when we removed the egg Our egg expanded a lot Our egg expanded a lot Not white anymore yellow The vinegar displaced 110ml Without the egg the vinegar level was 160ml

Grace Cooper 10/1/13 4th Science Mrs. Oefinger CONCLUSION In this we modeled osmosis. After 4 days the water molecules in the vinegar went from a high concentration to a low concentration flowing through the selectively permeable membrane. We modeled this osmosis by putting one egg in 250ml of white vinegar and leaving it for four days, and measuring it each day to see how much the egg expanded. Group 3s egg circumference-expanded 0.9cm less than the class average on day 4. I hypothesized if a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, and then the water will flow from the vinegar, through the membrane, into the egg. My hypothesis was correct.

ANALYSIS The vinegar caused the eggshell to dissolve because there was chemical reaction, due to the fact that the egg shell (calcium carbonate) when put in the vinegar (weak acid) water molecules go from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration dissolving the selectively permeable membrane and letting the water molecules (from the vinegar) flow through the egg. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded 3.4 cm more than group 7s. The rate of group 3s expansion was 1.125 cm per day, and group 7s expansion was 0.275 cm per day. The groups got different results because in-group 7 they put their rate instead of their expansion.
