Description of Activities and Setting Teacher will have students do a KWL chart on the whiteboard about finding the main idea of a passage. Teacher will encourage students with their ideas with questions such as: What is a main idea of a passage? How do you find the main idea? Can you use the main ideas to summarize the passage? Students should be able to write down 2 main ideas from the passage, using details to support their answer, and summarize the passage. Teacher will read aloud the first paragraph of Learn About Elections. Student volunteers will then read aloud the remaining paragraphs. Teacher will draw a word web on the SMART board. Students will provide 1 of the main ideas from the text and then draw supporting circle with the key details supporting the main idea. Teacher will ask the following questions: Is it possible to use this information to summarize this part of the text? Could you use this method with other texts to find the main idea and supporting details of the text? Is there another way you can map out the main idea and the details?
