Genetics, Inheritance and Variation of Traits

Established Goals
Derived from Common Core or Next Generation Science (If you do not use either, please indicate and link what standards you reference here:_______________)

! Essential Questions ! ! Understandings !

NGSS: HS-LS3-2 Students who demonstrate understanding can make and defend a claim based on evidence that inheritable genetic variations may result from (1) new genetic combinations through meiosis, (2) viable errors occurring during replication and/or (3) mutations caused by environmental factors.

What story does DNA tell? What are the roles of DNA and RNA in the storage and transmittance of genetic information?

Students will understand that... DNA has definite properties and goes through definite processes during a lifetime.

! NETS (Students): !

Students will know that DNA is contained in the nucleus of all eukaryotes, can be replicated and can synthesize proteins.

Students will be able to create a presentation summarizing their understanding of properties and processes of DNA.

! Learning Plan ! !

Performance Tasks: Students will create a Tagul cloud map and a Haiku Deck presentation. Each product will showcase their understanding of the properties and processes of DNA.

Self Assessments: Students will submit their work to a Dropbox on Haiku LMS, to be later shared on a webpage featuring their work.

Other Evidence:

Inquiry Hook: Students are to login to my website (tinyurl.com/mrsnation) and read the assignment on the Daily Assignments page.

! !

Activity Procedure: i. Login to Haiku LMS to get assignment. ii. Watch DNA Extraction on Vimeo and read The Cartoon Guide to Genetics. iii. Create a word cloud using Tagul.com. Choose 20 essential vocabulary words to use. iv. Create a slide presentation using HaikuDeck.com. Make 5 slides, minimum, summarizing the essential properties and/or processes of DNA. v. Students will have a total of five days to complete the assignments and submit them through the Haiku LMS Dropbox.

Reflection Methods: Students will have their products available to them on any device. They will be given the opportunity to share their work with others in their classes and in other classes. Finally, a formal quiz will be given to them to test their understanding of DNA properties and processes.

Materials

!
Facilities: Classroom, lab benches Equipment (non-tech): Science Notebook (SNB) pencil

Equipment (tech): Chromebooks with WiFi Elmo projector screen

Differentiations: Students with special needs will have access to electronic notes that they already have in their files. This way, they could evaluate which items are necessary to copy and paste into their projects. Students who are English learners will have access to Google Translate or dictionaries, and would be encouraged to use both English and their native language in presentations.
