Julian Collins 2nd period Science Modeling Osmosis MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water

flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? Water would flow HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and is left for three days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The reason I think my hypothesis is correct is that the water will flow into the egg because vinegar is composed of 95 percent water and inside the egg is 75 percent water. Therefore the water should flow into the egg because it has a lower concentration then outside it. But this will only occur once the eggshell is dissolved through the chemical reaction with the vinegar because the egg shell is composed of CH3COOH. Then all the water will flow in through the cell membrane and the egg will start to expand. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 150 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 3 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.5 16.5 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 300 with egg OBSERVATIONS Carbon dioxide bubbles on egg White egg shell Egg shell missing, squishy translucent yellow 200 ml water level without egg

CONCLUSION In this lab we studied osmosis. We were investigating if osmosis occurred when an egg was soaked in vinegar for 4 days. By day 4, there was evidence that our groups egg had expanded 3.5 cm, and this is evidence that the water moved from a high area of concentration (the vinegar) to an area of low concentration (the egg) through a semi permeable membrane. This only occurred because the eggshell dissolved in a chemical reaction with the vinegar. The 7th grade average expansion was 2.7 compared to our groups total expansion which was 3.5, so there was 0 .8 cm gap between our groups expansion and the 7th grades average expansion. I hypothesized that the water molecules would flow from the area of high concentration through a selectively permeable membrane. I was correct ANALYSIS 1.What caused the egg shell to dissolve? The shell dissolved because of the chemical reaction that occurred when the shell made of calcium carbonate or CH3COOH made contact with the weak acid called vinegar.

2.Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to Group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. Compare the results of these two groups. What was the difference in expansion? What was the rate (distance/time) of expansion in 4 days? Explain the discrepancy in data. Why did these groups get different results? PERIOD 7 TOTAL EXPANSION IN 4 DAYS 4.5 cm 1.1 cm

GROUP # 3 7

Group 3s egg expanded 3.4 cm more then group 7. The egg of group 3 egg expanded at a rate .85 cm per day. The reason the two eggs expanded at different rates was because the eggshell may have dissolved at different rates. Causing one to carry out the process of osmosis earlier than the other. 3.Why do cells need water? Cells need water because water plays an important role in chemical reaction, and with out it chemical reactions could not take place. Water also helps regulate heat. It helps keep a cells shape. It is used to transport things like food water and waste.
