Part I: Introduction 1: Who are the ELF? What are they against?

They are an organization that opposes GMOs 2: Which crop was the catalyst to the GMO food industry? Corn 3: What is the gene gun? How does it work? When they started inserting genes to all the crops Part 2: BT 4: Which university was the 1st to try GMO foods? Cornell University 5: What were some of the first ideas for GMOs? To change how a plant can survive in the environment they are in 6: Who are Monsanto? What did they set out to do? They are a company that set out to make GMOs 7: What is a big risk for corn crops? What is the problem with spraying with pesticides? They are very vulnerable to pest, the problem with pesticides are that they contaminate the crop 8: What is BT? What does it do? It is a type of pesticide, It kills any pest that damage the crop 9: Why was genetically engineering considered to be a saver of the environment? They were able to grow healthy crops at a faster rate and that could feed the population 10: When did GM foods get into the widespread media? In 1996 Part III: The Anti-GM Movement 11: What did the European Union vote for? They voted to ban GMOs 12: What did the University of New Mexico researchers find out from surveys and focus groups? They found out that most people didnt know that they were eating GMOs 13: What is your opinion on GMOs? (Before watching the video?)

I think that GMOs are good in a way because they dont have to spay pesticides but at the same time I dont think that they should change our food because if a small mistake happens it can be bad for us 14: Can someone prove that GM foods are safe? No nobody knows if it is safe 15: How are GM foods tested for safety? They are tested by feeding the foods to mice 16: How does Monsanto test their GM foods at the molecular level? They compare it with a non-genetically modified food and see the difference 17: What does the USDA, FDA and EPA do for GM foods? USDA: checks if they are safe to grow FDA: checks if they are safe to eat EPA: checks the BT and pesticides used Part IV: Allergies 18: Why are people concerned about allergies with GM crops? They dont know what that gene that is inserted into the crop is made of 19: Why should people have confidence in GM foods? Because they have been working on it for 3 decades 20: What do the Union of Concerned Scientists believe should be done? They believe they should be checked and observed 21: What happened to Starlink Corn? Explain the events and consequences. It created a protein that was an allergenic protein, They sold it to farmers so that their animals could eat it and the farmers didnt separate it from the corn we eat and it ended up in our food 22: Describe the meaning of the statement, The absence of evidence isnt the absence of harm. I think it means that just because there is no evidence in the labels of food products that there arent GMOs in it doesnt mean its true Part V: GM History 23: How did humans get different types of fruits and vegetables? We genetically modify them 24: What are some of the risks of natural breeding of fruits and vegetables? It can create toxins that can be deathly to us

25: What is the difference between classic breeding and genetic engineering? Classical breeding can only cross with relatable plants genetic engineering is a mix of many genes 26: Do you believe that a single gene in a new species would change the species as a whole? Yes because they are changing the DNA of the plant and it will be different 27: Monsanto holds __28__ % of U.S. agricultural patents. Part VI: GMOs and the Environment 28: Monarch Butterflies love to eat _____milkweed________ 29: What did the scientists find out about the BT Corn and Monarch Butterfly Caterpillars? They ate less grew more but more died Part VII: GMOs and Consumers 30: What is the difference between BT Corn Pollen in the lab and in the field? In the field the pollen doesnt travel that much so it only kills a little bit of monarchs 31: Why is it so hard to know if BT Corn Pollen is harmful to Monarch Butterflies in the field? Because they dont know if there are milkweeds in the area 32: If you had the choice between BT Corn and spraying with insecticide- which would you choose and why? I would choose BT corn because it only kills the monarchs and it will save other animals 33: What does it mean when food is organically grown? It means that there are a variety of thing grown in a single place 34: What are the fears of using BT Corn over time? The pest will be resistant and then reproduce making it use-less Part VIII: Pesticide Resistance & Feeding the World 35: What has the EPA mandated against the pesticide resistance? How should this help? They mandated that they make a refuge in every field, it should help by making the no-resistant pest mate with resistant pest and not allowing the resistant pest to reproduce 36: Why is it hard to guarantee that foods are GM free? Because you cant see physically if it is GM free 37: What is subsistence agriculture? It is farming organically

38: Why did Monsanto invest in the sweet potato for Africa? What were the results? Because they didnt have to spend that much money, the sweet potato grew big and healthy Part VIIII: Feeding the World 39: What is one of the biggest problems with soil in farming in parts of Mexico? It has too much toxic aluminum 40: Why do people resist the idea of helping people with GM foods? Because they dont think that it is safe Part X: Success and Challenges 41: How much money did Monsanto donate toward the world agriculture project? 20 million dollars 42: What other actions have the ELF taken? The have sabotaged projects 43: The genetic Salmon have been engineered to grow _4_ x larger than regular Salmon. 44: What is special about the transgenic Salmon? They grow their full size in the time it usually takes 45: What is the good genes hypothesis? If a male is large, then it must be good get resources and avoid predators Part XI: Population Problems 46: What did the model tell us about what would happen if the transgenic fish escaped and ended up mating with regular fish? That the population will decline to 0 47: What other GM products are in development? Explain the plans for bananas. Medicines are in development. The plan is to make the bananas an edible vaccine in the next 6 years 48: What is golden rice and how it is helpful? Because the rice turned into a golden color. It can supply most of the vitamins a child needs and can prevent blindness Explain.Part VII: The Future of GM Products 49: Why are biotech companies worried about labeling GM products? Because it indicates that something is wrong

50: Why do labels reduce Americans fear of GM food? Because they will have choices, We like to take our own risks and not let other people take them for us November 2012- California voters rejected Prop 37, which would have required retailers and food companies to label products made with genetically modified ingredients. 51: In spite of the fact that people in focus groups stated that they would rather see GM foods labeled, proposition 37 was rejected by Californians in November 2012. Voters were concerned about the increased costs of products that would be forced to be labeled. What is your opinion of labeling? I think that they should put it in labels because this way people will have the choice to eat the food that is genetically modified or to eat other organic stuff.
