Description of Activities and Setting Teacher will have students come to carpet and sit by their reading partners. Teacher will remind students of prior learning about compare and contrast. The teacher will go over vocabulary words and what to look for when comparing and contrasting. The students will compare and contrast poems by the same author.

6. Assessment Methods of all objectives/skills:

Teacher will read two poems by Kenn Nesbitt My Dog Ate My Homework and 15 min My Dog Does My Homework and ask the students if they see any similarities and differences in the two poems by the same author. The teacher will use a Venn Diagram to show the similarities and differences on the smartboard(PP) and have students come up and fill it in. The teacher will ask questions like, "What are the similarities and differences to the theme? to the setting? to the characters? The students will be on the carpet from morning routine. The teacher will have the students pair up with their reading partners and 15 min work on another set of poems by Kenn Nesbitt The Marvelous Homework and Housework Machine and My Robot's Misbehaving. Together using a Venn Diagram the partners will write some similarities and differences to theme, setting and characters. The teacher will have students bring completed work to basket and be given a new set of poems for independent work. Students will have another set of poems by Kenn Nesbitt to compare and 20 min contrast on their own, When Frankenstein Was Just a Kid and I'm Absolutely Full Tonight. The students will use a Venn Diagram to write down some similarities and differences to theme, setting and characters. This will be used to gauge students understanding about comparing and contrasting themes, settings and characters by the same author. Informal Assessment will be used in guided practice to gauge whether the students understand about comparing and contrasting theme, setting, and characters in poems by the same author with the Venn Diagram partners work on together. Formal Assessment will be used for independent practice to show students understand of comparing and contrasting when they are able to offer one or two examples of similarities and differences with the theme, setting and characters.

15 min 7. Closure Students will come to the front of the room and share what they came up with for compare and contrast of their Venn Diagrams as partners in guided practice.

If the students are not able to come up with one or two examples of similarities and differences with the theme, setting and characters, they will need more instruction.
