Lesson plan

Teachers: Mrs. M. Grant and D. Granville Subject: English Language Lesson Topic: Persuasive techniques (emotive language, rhetorical questions, factual information). Sub-topic: Persuasive Techniques in social discourse and social media. Grade: 10 A& B Date: April 4, 2014 Duration of Lesson: 50 minutes General Objective: Students should be able to: Recognize and assess the effectiveness of persuasive techniques used in social intercourses and mass media. Specific Objectives: Students should be able to: Identify and state the effective use of the three persuasive techniques in writing and viewing. Use persuasive techniques to distinguish facts from opinion. Discuss persuasive techniques based on target audience. Identify the writers intention with the use of persuasive techniques.

Previous knowledge: Students would be familiar with some of the persuasive techniques used in persuasive writing as this was introduced in previous lessons.

Methodology: Student- centred approach to teaching and learning, cooperative learning, role play, discussion, peer review. Instructional Materials: Power point presentation, projector, laptop, tablets, video camera, white board, students work, observation checklist.

Introductory activity: Students will be ask to view the PowerPoint presentation that will be projected on the white board using the class projector and assigned computer. (5 minutes) Development: Step 1: Students will engage in a guided discussion based on the video that was presented in the power point presentation. They are expected to give details about the techniques used such as their effectiveness, intention they portrays when used in different types of discourses and the meaning they convey in persuasive piece. (10 minutes) Step 2: Students will be placed in groups of five and will be asked to role play no longer than three minutes a song, skit, poem, or jingle using the techniques. An observation checklist will be provided to the groups to use as a guide to grade each performance. While students are dramatising, the session will be recorded using the video camera. (15 minutes) Culminating activity: Students will be required to log on to the class website using their tablets to search for different speeches from social discourses such as interviews, debates, seminars, advertisements and panel discussions. After which, they will be given ten minutes to write an essay choosing a topic of their own using the techniques discussed. They will then be ask to upload their essay and the first ten students to complete the activity will be awarded a prize. ( 22 minutes) Evaluation 2:
