ASPHALT PAVEMENTS

ASSIGNMENT: FIND THE FAILURES IN THE ASPHALT PAVEMENTES AS YOU FOLLOW THE RUTE IN THE MAP, IDENTIFY THE TYPE OF FAILURE AND WHERE IS LOCATED; MAKE AN ANALYSIS OF WHAT CAUSED THE DAMAGE IN THE ASPHALT AND YOUR RECOMENDATIONS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

RAVELING
- CAUSES: DISLOADING OF AGGREGATES IN THE ASPHALT. AGGREGATE SEGRETATION. INADECCUATE COMPACTATION DURING CONSTRUCTION. POOR QUALITY MIXTURE.

- SOLUTION: CREATE A MIX OF ASPHALT WITH BETTER PROPERTIES AND OPTIMUM DRAINAGE.

LOCATED AT STOP 1

LONGITUDINAL CRACKING
- CAUSES: FATIGUE FAILURE UNDER REPEAT TRAFFIC LOADING. -SOLUTIONS: IMPLEMENT A SOFTER ASPHALT WITH HIGH ASPHALT CONTENT, IT HAPPENS WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS NOT SO GROSS.

LOCATED AT STOP 1, 4 AND 6

BLEEDING
- CAUSES: ASPHALT SEEPS TO SURFACE, TOO MUCH ASPHALT. LOW AIR VOID CONTENT IN THE MIX. - SOLUTION: GENERATE A BALANCE BETWEEN THE QUANTITY OF AGGREGATES AND ASPHALT, THIS IS A MINOR BLEEDING BUT IT'S NOT A BIG TROUBLE.
LOCATED AT STOP 2

POTHOLES
- CAUSES: END RESULTS OF ALLIGATOR CRACKING AND LONGITUDINAL CRACKING. POOR SURFACE MIXTURE.

- SOLUTION:
THICKER PAVIMENT.

FULL-DEPHT PATCHING.

STRIPPING
- CAUSES: LESS OF BOND BETWEEN AGGREGATE AND ASPHALT. A LOT OF WATER IN THE MIX. OVERLAYS OVER AN EXISTING OPEN-GRADED SURFACE COURSE. - SOLUTION: BETTER ADHESIVE PROPERTIES AND DRAINAGE.

BLOCK CRACKING
- CAUSES: DAILY TEMPERATURE, CYCLING. OLD AND DRIED OUT MIX. POOR CHOICE OF ASPHALT BINDER IN THE MIX DESIGN. - SOLUTION: SOFTER ASPHALT, LESS TEMPERATURE SENSITIVE ASPHALT.
LOCATED AT STOP 3 AND 7

REMOVE AND REPLACE THE CRACKED PAVEMENT LAYER WITH AN OVERLAY.

PATCHING
- CAUSES: PREVIOUS LOCALIZED PAVEMENT DETERIORATION THAT HAS BEEN REMOVED AND PATCHED.
UTILITY CUTS. - SOLUTION: ARE THEMSELVES A REPAIR ACTION. THEY CAN BE REMOVED FROM A PAVEMENTS SURFACE IS BY EITHER A STRUCTURAL OR NOSTRUCTURAL OVERLAY.

LOCATED AT STOP 3 AND 7

TRANSVERSE CRACKING
- CAUSES: THERMAL CONTRACTION. SHRINKAGE OF THE ASPHALT LAYER. - SOLUTION: SOFTER ASPHALT.

LOCATED AT STOP 1, 3 AND 4

EDGE CRACKING
- CAUSES: LACK OF SHOULDER, SHOULDER HAS A THIN THICK. POOR DRAINAGE. WEAK BASE OR SUBGRADE LAYER. - SOLUTIONS: MAKE A BIGGER SHOULDER AND INCREASE THE THICKNESS. CRACK SEAL/FILL.
LOCATED AT STOP 5

RUTTING
- CAUSES: PAVEMENT DEFORMATION. INSUFFICIENT COMPACTION OF MIX LAYERS DURING CONSTRUCTION. IMPROPER MIX DESIGN OR MANUFACTURE. - SOLUTION: STIFF ASPHALT, AND INCORPORATE ANGULAR AGGREGATES.
LOCATED AT STOP 8 AND 9

LEVELED AND OVERLAID.

ALLIGATOR CRACKING
- CAUSES: FATIGUE, REPEATED TRAFFIC LOAD. STRIPPING ON THE BOTTOM OF THE MIX LAYER. LOSS OF BASE, SUBBASE OR SUBGRADE SUPPORT. - SOLUTION: SOFTER ASPHALT AND HIGHER ASPHALT CONTENT.
