CHDV 210 Curriculum Activities Self Evaluation Form Alphabet Hunt Please reflect on these questions as you evaluate

each of the 5 activities that you present. Review the rubric carefully to be sure that you have included all components to earn the highest score possible. o Why did you choose this particular activity? (DRDP conversation with child etc.!

" chose this activity because it was review wee# so " wanted the children to have a fun activity to review letters in the alphabet. " chose the alphabet hunt because there is a systemic relationship between sounds and the letters they belong to ($pstein %&&' p.%5!. " wanted to see what connections between the items " set out and the letters of the alphabet they could ma#e on their own or with help. " also wanted to see what letters in the alphabet they could recogni(e. " also chose this activity because according to $pstein #nowing letter sounds is a distinct ability from #nowing letter names but they develop together because children are usually given the information of both at the same time ($pstein %&&' p.)*! " wanted to ma#e sure it was an activity where children were seeing connection between the items and their sounds and letters.
o What were the strong points of this activity?

+ strong point " felt " had during the first time " did activity was regrouping the children because they went outside and saw the items and wanted to pic# them up and play right away so it was hard at first to get their attention to e,plain the hunt. " started to sing the +-./s and they came near and sat with me while we all sang this got their attention on me and " was able to tell them what we were going to do. +nother strong point " felt " had was helping them find what letter of the alphabet an item went to. When they couldn/t recogni(e the letter on their own " helped them point to each letter while singing the +-./s until we came to the letter of the alphabet the item started with. +ccording to $pstein in order to gain phonological awareness children need adult guided e,perience ($pstein %&&' p.%*!. 0he children would get very e,cited every time they found an item on the hunt and found the right place for it.
o What were the wea# areas?

0he first time " did the activity we did it in the little front gated area outside the front door of the classroom and it was a very small area to do a treasure

hunt. 0he items were in plain sight and there were not a lot of places to go. 0he children still e,pressed e,citement and loved finding all the items and finding their place but " felt the playground area was the best place to do it. 0he second time " tried the activity was much different. We did the activity during the children/s outdoor time. "nstead of 1ust one small group of children any of the children could choose to do this activity whenever they wanted. 2ome of the children went bac# and forth between doing the treasure hunt and doing their normal outdoor activities.

What specific changes did you try out when you presented the activity a second time?

0he second time the activity was done " actually did not start with any particular group of children but one child noticed some of the items on the playground right away and started bringing them to me before " could announce the activity to the other children so we started the hunt right then and there no time for an introduction. 0he other children saw what he was doing and decided to 1oin in. "t was harder to #eep the larger group of children focused on one single activity but in some ways it was also more fun.

$valuate the success of these revisions. 3ow might you improve ne,t time? (4ocus on your teaching s#ills!

" thin# some of the things in the revision that wor#ed was the actual hunting for the items. 0he children were able to hunt all over the playground for any items and " en1oyed letting the children come and go to the activity as they pleased. " en1oy seeing the children curious about what is happening and then engaging themselves in an activity that " have planned. "t shows me that it is something they are en1oying without being told to participate .

Did your curriculum activity meet your stated ob1ective? 2upport your answer with specific e,amples from your observation of the children/s involvement in the activity.

With some of the children the activity met the ob1ectives some of the children needed more guidance. + couple of the children were able to match the items to the letters when " told them what sound the letter made. When the

children weren/t able to identify the letter the item started with " would tell it to them. 2ome of the children were able to recogni(e what that letter loo#ed li#e especially when it was a letter that was in their name. 2ome of the letters they did not recogni(e right away so " went through the alphabet with them. 0he children said the alphabet and pointed at each letter as they went along.

-ased upon your informal assessment of the children during this activity how would you build upon this activity? What would be the ne,t curriculum activity you would plan in this area to enhance the children/s learning and why would you choose this ne,t activity?

-ased on the assessment of the children " would want to build their letter recognition s#ills. " would love to do more alphabet hunts but maybe not with every letter in the alphabet. " might do only letters in children/s names or have all items that have the letter it starts with on it so the children can have an easier time recogni(ing the letters.
