Communication is something that we all do throughout the course of our lives.

For teachers, communication is key in fostering relationships with our students and peers. Without communication, we would not be able to express gratitude, recognition, or concern. This is an area of my life that I have always seen room for improvement in. I say this, not because I do not enjoy conversing with others, but because I enjoy listening to others much more. Hearing somebody else speak puts me in touch with him or her and this really makes my heart sing. As a child with many questions, I felt frustrated when I would ask a question and receive an explanation that did not correspond with what I wanted to know. I soon learned the difference between hearing and listening, which inspired me to set out on being a good listener for others. I understand that communication involves both expression of ones self and listening to others, which I seek to improve every day. While observing Michelle Benjamin, who teaches a combination class of kindergarten and first grade students at Lagunitas School in San Geronimo, San Rafael, I have had the honor of learning how communication can benefit classroom management. When asked how communication assisted her most, Michelle explained that kind communication has changed her previous philosophies regarding discipline. Rather than singling out negative behavior, Michelle often communicates gratitude towards responsible behavior, which has proven to have greater results in improving classroom atmosphere above any other disciplinary action. Moreover, Michelle emphasized how the tone of her communication changes the outcome of many situations. Communication is extremely important for teachers. They are constantly receiving new information and must be able to perceive the message of an author to the best of their ability. In professional interaction with coworkers, a teacher has the responsibility of conveying their knowledge and thoughts to others in a manner that is comprehensible. Teachers have to report their students progress to parents, which must be done in a diplomatic way. In addition, teachers with good communication skills are able to share and dicuss ideas with colleagues, school board members, and administration, which potentially improves their effectiveness and the quality of their teaching experience. Overall, while teachers spend a large portion of their time interacting with students, communication with parents and coworkers reinforces a learning community.
