Macbeth Performance Project You will be given a section of the play to perform and process.

In your presentation, there are several aspects that you will focus on/ be assessed on:

1. Performance/ reading of play section 2. Presentation of Content using Ethos, Pathos, and Logos 3. Discussion and Explanation 4. Supportive materials (optional but recommended)

1. Performance/ reading of play section You will be performing/ reading a section of the play. If you need additional character support, you may choose from your audience and have additional people read along. Each group member is expected to perform/ read from the section, contribute to planning and preparation, and participate in the presentation. If you have chosen to work independently, you are solely responsible for your mark, and assignment has been scaled back, but the presentation expectations should still be met.

2. Presentation of Content using Ethos, Pathos, and Logos Presentations should focus on explaining the actions of the characters in the play using these three guiding aspects. This will allow you to understand why a character makes the choices he or she does, what contexts and aspects encourage the character to make these choices, and how effectively a character justifies his or her choices/ actions. I. Ethos:

Ethos: Persuasion is achieved by the speaker's personal character when the speech is so spoken as to make us think him credible. Hear Ethos, think Ethics. II. How does this character develop his or her credibility to others? What kinds of context/ motivation does this character carry? How do these affect the characters actions/ decisions/ reactions? Pathos:

Pathos: persuasion may come through the hearers, when the speech stirs their emotions. Hear Pathos, think Pathology This is the state that I am in (disease, mental illness/ health). III. Related to empathy / development of empathy for this character How does the character make YOU feel what he or she is feeling? Why is the character feeling this way? How are these feelings legitimized, justified, explained by the person feeling them? Logos:

Logos: persuasion is effected through the speech itself when we have proved a truth or an apparent truth by means of the persuasive arguments suitable to the case in question. Hear Logos, think Logic.

(Logos Continued) How does this character think about/ experience things? Why is this? (Where has this behavior come from?) How has the character demonstrated his or her beliefs? What kind of information has been provided to support the characters actions? Are the reasons for his or her actions justifiable? Why or why not?

3. Discussion and Explanation As you are presenting, your classmates may have questions for you about your material and ideas. You should be prepared to address these questions. You should also have 2-3 discussion questions prepared. These questions should help to explain and explore your ideas and material. Questions should be open-ended, not yes or no; use these questions to facilitate discussion. You should focus on areas that were interesting, frustrating, or confusing for you discussion helps with our information processing, and will help us to integrate the concepts you have presented.

4. Supportive materials (optional but recommended) You can be as creative as you like with this project. You may choose to incorporate any of the following, or additional ideas/ materials/ supporting elements as you like. Choose elements that will help you remember your ideas, help your classmates remember important concepts, and energize your presentation. Any supportive materials should ADD TO, but not REPLACE elements of your presentation; for example, you cannot show a video of someone performing that section of the play unless it is YOU who has made/ starred in/ filmed/ created the video.

Supportive Materials Ideas: Costumes Props Prezi* Powerpoint* Soundtracks Theatrical noises Voicing Theatrical makeup Visuals like posters, written signs, etc

*If using supports like Prezi or Powerpoint, please DO NOT READ DIRECTLY FROM THE SLIDES. This is a brutal and fatal presentation practice use these elements to remind you of your points, not make them for you. Use them to help your audience understand your ideas, not explain the whole thing. DO NOT READ YOUR PRESENTATION PRESENT IT! Marks will be significantly reduced for groups or individuals who choose to read their entire presentation. Obviously reading from the script is allowed and encouraged.

Planning: This presentation will take some significant planning and preparation. I suggest you follow the steps below, either in this order, or as you prefer:

Read through the assignment. Make sure you understand what is required of you. Brainstorm ideas about what kind of presentation or reading you would like to do. Make a list of what you might need for the different kinds of presentations, and decide what your best option is. (Think about what materials you need! If these will be challenging to come by, plan accordingly!) In your group, read your section of the play through. You may want to read it at home on your own as well, especially if you are uncomfortable reading in a group setting (good preparation). Decide if your presentation ideas will still work/ fit with this section of the script. If not, return to brainstorming step. (This is called going back to the drawing board first ideas are not always the best ideas! Allow yourself to change if things are not working.) Address the Presentation of Content: Ethos, Pathos, Logos section. This may/ should take you more than one class plan your time accordingly! Create your presentation (in whatever form you have chosen). **If you need materials/ support from Ms. Harrison for this stage, make sure you let her know what you need BEFORE this day. ** Bring what you need to class as well. Practice/ run through your presentation. Be prepared for snags, and try to troubleshoot as much as possible at this stage. Add to or adjust your presentation supportive materials so that they work well for you. Take deep breaths, dont rush, be ready to present!
