Enduring Understandings:
An individuals identity is shaped by how they think about themselves, how others see them, and how society influences these perspectives.

Essential Questions:
How does society shape ones identity? How do external pressures influence ones identity?

Objectives:
Students will be able to: Make connections between their society and the society presented in fictional texts Identify societal and historical influences in fictional texts

Materials: Invisible Man texts Procedures: Group Activity: Students will spend the period examining American Institutions, what cultural and social values they represent, and how they function in the novel Teacher will explain class work and write focusing questions on white board

What is the institutions purpose? What does IM believe about the institution? (What is he blinded by/about) What does IM eventually discover about the institution?

Students will be sitting at round tables, in groups of 4 or 5, and will be given an institution that they will focus on 1. Education and schools 2. Religion 3. The medical system 4. Business/Capitalism 5. Unions 7. Military In their groups, students will first discuss what ideals and values these institutions support, and what they represent in American society Students will then discuss the role these institutions play and what they represent in Invisible Man, noting specific examples from the text On poster paper, students will display information If time, students will present work to class Homework: Read chapter 13 and 14, comment, question, quote Assessment: Participation in group work, collaboration with classmates, visual representation of work Standards:
CC.1.3.11-12.B: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences and conclusions based on and related to an authors implicit and explicit assumptions and beliefs. CC.1.5.11-12.A: Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions on grades level topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. CC.1.3.11-12.F: Evaluate how words and phrases shape meaning and tone in texts.
