Lesson/Activity Plan Template Teacher Candidate _________________Paige Leuthold________________________________ Name of Lesson _____Plotting Ordered Pairs Part 2____________________________________ Subject ____Mathematics_____________________ Grade __4th__________________ Rationale for lesson: Plotting ordered pairs is an essential skill for future lessons in graphing. Graphing is an essential skill that students will use throughout their studies of mathematics. Graphs are also part of other subjects and in the real world. Students need to be able to accurately interpret the information that is displayed.

Learning outcomes: The students will practice using the terms associated with the coordinate plane. Students will graph ordered pairs (x,y) in all quadrants. Students will state the location of points in all quadrants by giving ordered pairs. Students will draw a picture on the coordinate plane using all quadrants. Students will create a set of directions for others to follow to recreate an original image.

Assessment of student outcomes: Students will be assessed based upon participation and teacher observation. Students will also be assessed on the students original drawing, the directions, and the recreated drawing with a rubric out of four: 4 - Drawing is neat, clear, and clever, Drawing covers all four quadrants, at least 30 ordered pairs are included in the drawing and directions, directions are neat, clear, and precise, other students drawing matches original drawing. 3 Drawing is mostly neat and clear, Drawing covers all four quadrants, 20-30 ordered pairs are included in the drawing and directions, directions are mostly neat, clear, and precise, other students drawing matches original drawing. 2 - Drawing is sloppy and hard to interpret, Drawing covers less than four quadrants, less than 20 ordered pairs are included in the drawing and directions, directions are unclear and difficult to follow, other students drawing looks nothing like the original drawing. 1 - Drawing is sloppy and hard to interpret, Drawing covers only one quadrant, less than 10 ordered pairs are included in the drawing and directions, directions are unclear and difficult to follow or not given, other student was not able to draw the picture, or the drawing looks nothing like the original students drawing

Related Foundations/Indiana Academic Standard: MA.4.6 2000 - Data Analysis and Probability

Students organize, represent, and interpret numerical and categorical data and clearly communicate the findings. They show outcomes for simple probability situations. Materials Needed: Pencil Paper Overhead projector and markers Coordinate Plan Grid sheet (overhead transparency and paper copies) Lesson/Activity Presentation: Anticipatory set: Review the parts of the coordinate plane as introduced in the previous lesson (x and y axis, scale, title, etc). Then let the students know that they will be building on the skills they learned in the previous lesson but now using all of the quadrants. Students will get to do some drawing and coloring as well!

Teaching procedures: Project the coordinate plane on the overhead with all four quadrants. Starting in the top right corner, label each of the quadrants counter clockwise while talking out loud through the process. Then introduce the concept that negative numbers go left and down. Graph the ordered pairs (-3,4), (6,2), (3, -9), and (-1, -7). Talk the entire class through the graphing process.

Guided and Independent Practice: Give each student a coordinate plane grid sheet that is as big as a sheet of computer paper and it goes 10 hashes in each direction. Students will draw a picture on the grid going through at least 30 points. On a separate sheet of paper, students will write directions using ordered pairs and some guiding words that would make it easy for their original picture to be drawn. The requirements for the drawing are as follows: the drawing must be in all four quadrants, the directions must be on a separate sheet of paper, the drawing and directions must include at least 30 separate ordered pairs. Once complete, teacher will collect directions and redistribute them to new students with a blank coordinate plane grid sheet. Students will follow the directions to recreate the picture. The students should confirm with the drawer that the recreated photo is mostly correct. Closure: Ask for volunteers to show his/her drawing. Have a handful of students show the class. Then collect the students original drawing, directions, and the recreated drawing for grading.

Differentiated instruction: For lower level students, have the students draw a picture in only the first quadrant with positive ordered pairs.
