Outcomes Objectives K1.3, K2.2, K2.1. K2.5, S4 Students will: 1. Recognize units of force 2. Identify forces on a structure 3. Describe how structures are designed to withstand static and dynamic loads 4. Compare bridges developed by different cultures and at different times 5. Work cooperatively in a team Powerpoint slideshow Name tags, Text books Review game (section 1 and external forces Review notes to hand out video Sit in seating plan, get out nametags and journals Do attendance Journals: Name a natural and a manmade structure that are similar. Put journals away -agenda for the class -Structure of the day! Bahraim World Trade Centre uses its unique shape to funnel the wind into turbines built between the two towers, which generate power. Bridge types (powerpoint) (5min) Review 4 types of bridges and show pictures o Beam, truss (lightweight but strong), suspension, arch (very strong) o How do engineers pick a bridge? What the bridge is crossing, what kinds of loads the bridge will be supporting Bridges of the world (5min) Show each bridge on powerpoint and ask the class what type of bridge it is, give them a few facts about each bridge (on slideshow) June 2013 Flood (5min) Show pictures of bridges in the flood, and video of the flood impacting roads, houses, and bridges https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lS4geX4PUg Have a class discussion about the forces involved, and whether the structures were built to withstand them (dynamic force of flood waters) Hand out review sheets (2min) Explain that there will be a quiz tomorrow and that they should review the text book and this review sheet Review game (15min) Jeopardy Assessment Read journal responses
