Competency 1: Accountability Related Task 1.

1 Ability to analyze and interpret the meaning of various student assessments to boards, teaching staff, and others. Specific Task 1.1.1 Prepare a report of student performance on a recent state assessment test. Compare the results to state targets and those realized by peer school or districts. Narrative Description Compiling data from last years MME and ACT, I will create a formal display that can be used to see the statistics of testing scores and how we compared to other school districts in Genesee County. I will display the comparisons and information in our school as an informative tool for staff, students and parents. I will present the information at a school board meeting and share the findings with our superintendents and school board. Also incorporated will be the US News World Report plaque that our school received in the school year 2012-2013 as well as highlights and improvements that need to be addressed.

Process, Purpose and Approach My principal had discussed with me that he was very interested in creating a data wall outside the main office. Data walls are something that conveys information to the staff, students and any community member that enters your building about school and grade data. The display can be anything from school test scores, the lowest and highest achieving students, and even individual subject progress. For the purpose of my data wall competency, my principal already had in mind that he would like to create a wall that would display our MME and ACT scores and how we compared to the Genesee Intermediate School District and the State. He also wanted to incorporate other plaque awards that we had received last school year. My first task was to sit down with my principal and discuss how many years of data he preferred, and any other specifics about the data wall I would create. He wanted me to pull data from school years 2010-2011, 2011-2012, and 2012-2013. At first we had discussed comparing our scores and proficiency to other schools, but after talking about it we concluded with just comparing our high school to the Intermediate School District and the state. My second task was getting data pulled with help from our Assessment Coordinator, Eric Chorley. He was able to share our school, district and state data that he received from our Genesee Intermediate School District assessment contact. The information was considered embargoed information, and therefore it is not for public distribution or viewing. I was able to look at the data and pull information for the ACT and MME but only for years 2011 and 2012. There werent scores for the 2013 data on these charts and so I had to go to the Michigan School data website to retrieve the 2013 information I sought. The first thing I needed to distinguish on the charts was that the ACT information was given as Mean Score, or average test score. The MME data was given as proficiency passed information. This was important to know because the data from the ISD consisted of a bunch of columns and numbers.and was not as detailed as the Michigan School data. Also, in order to make my own graphs with the

information I needed, I had to go through each chart and retrieve the numbers for each subject area for all three years. When talking to my principal, I decided to make each year its own separate graph of information. Each year would also have subjects from that test individualized for comparison. I then took the data, created the formulas and graphed them on excel. After getting them approved by my principal, I had them printed. I bought matching 8x11 frames for all my graphs and came up with a design for the wall outside the office. I made sure to leave a spot for our US News World Report Plaque that hadnt arrived yet. Below are the individual slides (6 each) that are going to be displayed on the wall outside the main office.

What I learned 1. Sorting through data is something that requires patience and a general knowledge about how tests are scored and labeled. When I first acquired the MME and ACT data, I needed to notice that the results were reported differently. The MME data reported percent proficiency while the ACT data reported a MEAN score (or average). 2. It is important to note that school test data should be treated with the upmost importance and seriousness because data misinterpreted can create misleading information and incorrect goals. 3. You dont always get what you want. When I first gathered the data from our assessment coordinator, the 2013 data was not present. www.mischooldata.org was the website that I used to get the most recent information for 2013 and was also very interesting to acquire specific information about any school district. 4. I also realized that presentation is very important. My data wall is present for staff, parents, teachers, students and board members to know where we are and how we compare to the Intermediate School District and State. Information and display are something that help your schools image.
