Suppose you raise the question", Shaykh Sidi Omar al-Futi discussed, How can the latter day

saint be more excellent than the great saints of earlier times, whose excellence has been disseminated and come to be widely known, and whose fame has spread in the east and the west, like Shaykh Abdellqadir al-Jilani, Shaykh Abul Hassan Shadhili, and others of their kind (may Allah be well pleased with them all). My answer to this will be: Due to the fact that the latter day Prophet Sidna Mohammed (Peace and blessing be upon him) is more excellent than Abraham, the Bosom Friend of Allah, and Moses, and Jesus, and others among the Prophets and the Messengers (upon our Prophet and upon them be the most excellent blessing and peace). Abul Mawahib al Tunsi ("Sidi Abdellaziz Tunsi; d. 468/1053) (may Allah be well pleased with him) said: You must beware of saying: The great ones and the truthful ones among the spiritual paupers have departed, for they have not departed in reality. They are simply like the treasure of the keeper of the vault. To someone who comes in the later time, Allah may give what He withheld from the people of the earlier age, for Allah gave to Sidna Mohammed (may Peace and blessing be upon him) what He did not give to the Prophets before him. There is a little question that grand saints venerated Sidna Shaykh as a Seal of Mohammedian Sainthood in his lifetime. The Khalwati master, Sidi Mahmud al-Kurdi alIraqi (d. 1186/1771), has already indicated that Sidna Shaykh's potential was more advanced than the Qutbaniya he was seeking. A Tunisian Shadhili shaykh, on the other hand, confessed to the venerated muqaddam, Sidi Ahmed ibn Mohammed Abdellawi (d. 1328/1913), that he receives provision through the sphere of Mawlana Shaykh Tijani. Even the Shaykh in Sharia and Tariqa, the source of secrets and realities, Moulay Abdellqadir al-Jilani (d. 563/1148), perceived the Tijanite Khatmiya. Kashf al-Hijab depicts that the companion of Sidna Shaykh, Sidi Abul Hassan Ali ibn Chtiwi al-Jaridi, has often met the spirit Moulay Abdellqadir from whom he received initiation of his Tariqa. Hunting was his occupation; one day while hunting a gazelle with all his attention on his prey, appeared before him Moulay Abdellqadir saddled on his horse. He was embarrassed that his Shaykh found him in such a situation. They started discussing and our personage inquired the Shaykh: "O my master, we heard about a Shaykh that came to Abi Samghoune, what do you say about him?" He answered to his inquiry, "O my son, he is the tree under which shadow all of us find shelter." Hearing this caused Sidi Ali to affiliate himself with Sidna Shaykh. It is also reported by Sidi Abul Hassan Harazem that he heared Sidna Shaykh saying, I have asked the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him): O Master, the Shaykh Mawlana Abdellqadir al-Jilani said, 'My stamp cannot be overstamped.' The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) responded: O Ahmed your stamp can overtake any stamp and the other stamps cannot overtake yours. On the 18th of Safar, one month and few days on achiveing the Qutbaniya, Sidna Shaykh perceived his great rank: i.e. Maqam al-Katmiya (Stage of Concealhood). Thus he gained eternal fame with the title of the "Concealed Pole (al-Qutb al-Maktum). Sidna Shaykh said, "The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) told me in daylight not in state of sleepiness that I was the Concealed Pole (al-Qutb al-Maktum) and the Sealed Isthmus (alBarzakh al-Makhtum)". The quiddity of this rank is concealed. The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said, "[Al-Qutb al-Maktum] is the one Allah had concealed from His angles and prophets except me". According to Sidi Mohammed al-Ghali Boutaleb (d.

1244/1829) Sidna Shaykh lived 30 years in the Katmiya. The scholar Sidi Mohammed ibn al-Mishri (d. 1224/1809) remarks in Kitab al-Jami'a, "The Hidden Pole has a position facing the Mohammedian Reality that will never be for anyone else from amongst all the greatest of the saints (may Allah be pleased with all of them). With that said, verily his reality in that position which is specific to him will not occur to anyone but God and the Chieftain of Existence (peace and blessing be upon him) because he has a relationship with the Mohammedian Reality." In the Jawahir al-Maani, Sidna Shaykh Abul Abbas Tijani is quoted to say the following on the Mohammedian Reality,

"Know that when Allah created the Mohammedian Reality, He placed inside it all that He apportioned for the creation from the outpouring of knowledge, gnosis, secrets, manifestations, light, as well as the creation (itself) by way of all its rulings, necessities, and requirements. Also know that he (peace and blessing be upon him) is now ascending in perfect witnessing of the Divine in such a way that no one else could ever hope for. This perfection will never end for the duration of an eternity of eternities. Regarding this, there is nothing within the essences of existence anything more worthy of respect or greater than this Mohammedian Reality nor purer or cleaner or more perfect. Again, verily it is in its actual reality unreachable and unrecognisable. Uwais al Qarni (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sidna Omar and Sidna Ali (may Allah be pleased with both of them) when they met him: You haven't see anything of the Prophet but his shadow. They replied: Not even the son of Abi Qahafa" (Sidna Abu Bakr). He replied, "Not even the son of Abi Qahafa." He did not say that to them until he had reach into the depths of gnosis wherein he sought a place in the essence of the Mohammedian Reality. It was said to him: This is an affair whose arrival is incapacitated for even the greatest of the Prophets so its hopeless for anyone in any aspect or state." Abu Yazid said (may Allah be pleased with him): "I underwent the depths of gnosises in search of place at the essence of the Mohammedian Reality to where I found between me and it a thousand veils of light. If I approached the first veil I would be burned just as a hair is burned when cast into the fire, and so I merely delayed the retreat. More, Shaykh al-Islam Abul Fayd Sidi al-Haj Ibrahim ibn Abdullah Niass al-Kulakhi (d. 1390/1975) has said, The Mohammedian Reality is manifested on the reality of Sidna Shaykh, the Concealed Pole and Seal of Sainthood, from the primordial time till period of his appearance. Sidna Shaykh is the only saint that receives divine providence directly from his grandfather (peace and blessing be upon him). The Mohammedian Reality manifested on Sidna Shaykh encloses all the attributes of his grandfather (peace and blessing be upon him) save that of prophethood. That is the reason why Sidna Shaykh Tijani was named the Best of all Saints. Whoever drinks from the spiritual sea of Mohammedian Reality will emerge as prophet save Sidna Shaykh Tijani who drank from it and did not become a prophet but a saint. (...) Shaykh Tijani is the source of sainthood and all creation receive its divine providence from his nature from the primordial time till the day of resurrection. Sidna Shaykh said: My two feet steps on the neck of all saints from the period of Adam to the day of resurrection. I (Shaykh Niass) say there is no controversy over this, what

he means by his two feet his Sufi order and his reality. He asserted, through ecstatic utterances that I am He and He is I and if I am asked thousands of questions, I will answer in one word. By virtue of this he emerged as a Seal of Saints just like the Prophet (pace and blessing be upon him) emerged as Seal of Prophets. The Tijani Sufi Path abrogated all Sufi Orders just like the Divine Law (Sharia) of the Prophet abrogated all laws before him.

It must be remembered that meeting for the sake of Allah is one of the ways of receiving shade under the thone of Arsh on the day when there will be no other shade as reported in the hadith: "Seven persons shall enjoy the shade of Allah's throne when there will be no other shade on the Day of Judgement: (i) A just ruler, (ii) A young person who is nurtured in Ibadat of Allah Taala; (iii) A person whose heart is attached to the Masjid; (iv) Two persons who love each other for the pleasure of Allah; without any worldly motive, and they meet and separate in that spirit; (v) A man who due to fear of Allah, refuses to go near a respectable beautiful woman, sexually inclined towards him, as also a woman who in a similar situation refuses to meet a man; (vi) A person who gives Sadaqah so secretly that his left hand does not know what the right hand gives away; (vii) A person who cries when remembering Allah in solitude." The first part of the statement is about the Prophet (SM). The second part is about the Sufi. Which sufi you are talking about? (Ahmad Tijani? Not clear from your statement, without reading several times.) How does anyone know that Sidi Ahmad was anything equal to Prophet (SM)? Please clarify.

Make Istighfaar in Abundance ~ Seek the Forgiveness of Allah

July 8, 2013 ... VEILED GEMS, ZIKR

Excerpts from ~ Ramadaan 1434 Programmes

Rasulullah Sallalahu alayhi wa Sallam used to recite : ~ Astagfirullah (I seek forgiveness of Allah) at least 100 times a day. Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas RA narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: The one who (regularly) says Istighfaar, Allah Azza Wa-Jal will open a path for him from all difficulties, remove him from all sorrow, and grant him sustenance from unimagined and unexpected sources. ~ (Abu Dawud) A person who says :

Astaghfirullah al-Azeem al-lazi la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum wa atubu ilaih (I seek the forgiveness of Allah the Mighty, Whom there is none worthy of worship except Him, The Living, The Eternal, and I repent unto Him) even if he has committed sins as much as the the foam of an ocean, still he will be forgiven. [Abu Dawud- 2:85/ Tirmidhi 5:569]

Question: What should we recite upon completing salat? ANSWER One who performed salat individually or behind the imam should say upon saying the salam (taslim) at

the end of salat, Allahumma anta-s-salaam wa minka-s-salaam tabaarakta ya dhal jalaali wa-l ikraam. After it, one should say three times, Astaghfirullah al-azeem alla-dhee laa ilaaha illaa huwal hayyal qayyooma wa atoobu ilayh. This is called prayer of repentance. After reciting Ayat al-Kursi, one should say Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu akbar 33 times. Then one should say, Laa ilaaha illallahu wahdahoo laa shareeka lah lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa alaa kulli shayin qadeer. It is bidat (religious innovation) to add any other dua to this order. Then one should raise ones hands and make dua (supplication). After dua, one should say Amin and wipe ones face with ones hands. It is stated in a hadith-i sharif, The dua made after the five fard salats is accepted. Question: What surah and adhkar should we recite after making dua following salat? ANSWER You should recite Surat al-Ikhlas 11 times, Surat al-Falaq once, Surat an-Nas once. Then say Astaghfirullah 67 times, thus the total number of them will be 70 *because you also said it on completion of salat 3 times+. Say Subhaanallahi wa bi-hamdihi subhaanallahil azeem 10 times. Say the ayah *that begins with+, Subhana rabbika Question: I saw when I was offering hajj in Mecca that some people left after salat without saying tasbihaat or dua. They say that it is bidat to say tasbihaat collectively after salat and to say Amin to the imams dua. Are they bidat, indeed? ANSWER It is best for the jamaat and the imam to make dua together quietly. It is also permissible for them to make dua separately or to leave the mosque without making dua, but one should not form a habit of leaving the mosque without making dua. We should both say Amin to the dua of the imam and make dua individually as well. What is bidat is a muazzins leading people in tasbihaat. Saying tasbihaat (uttering Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu akbar, 33 times each) or making dua is not bidat. It is written in fiqh books: After performing a fard salat, if there is no final sunnat after the fard, or after performing the final sunnat, it is mustahab for the imam to turn right or left or toward the jamaat. He may as well leave the mosque at once if he has some work to do. It is stated in a hadith-i sharif, Whoever says, Astaghfirullah al-a-dheem al-la-dhee laa ilaaha illaa huw-al-hayy-al-qayyooma wa atoobu ilayh three times after every salat, all his sins will be forgiven. After the prayer of repentance, it is mustahab (for the imam and for the jamaat) to recite Ayat al-Kursi once and then to say Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu akbar, 33 times each. Then they should say Laa ilaaha illallahu wahdahu laa shareeka lah once. Afterwards, they should raise their hands as high as their chests and make

dua. (Maraqi al-Falah, Tahtawi) Together with the imam and jamaat, stretch your arms a little ahead and raise them as high as your chest. Open your palms completely and make them face the sky. Make dua and conclude it with Amin. (Ey Oul lmihali) Four hadith-i sharifs on saying Amin at the end of dua are as follows: (If a jamaat makes dua collectively and if some of them say Amin, Allahu taala accepts that dua.) [Hakim] (The one who makes dua and the one who says Amin to it are partners of thawab [reward].) [Daylami] (Let the imam not exclude the jamaat from his dua. If he does, he will have betrayed them.) [Bayhaqi] (When the imam says Amin, say Amin too because if the Amin of any of you coincides with that of angels, his past sins will be forgiven.) [Bukhari] It is not bidat, but mustahab, for the jamaat to say the tasbihaat and to make dua together with the imam. (Nimat-i Islam) Question: What should we say when making dua (supplication) at the end of salat? ANSWER There is not a formula to be said when one is making dua after salat. Everyone should say words according to his/her specific needs. It is not correct to make the same dua all the time. One should be consciously aware of what one is asking for. It is not right to say things without the presence of mind, and it is makruh to memorize some clichs as dua and to recite them in a poetic form. Dua should be made in a soft voice and with the presence of mind and heart. It is makruh, too, to restrict dua to certain times and occasions, such as on completion of salats. One should take every opportunity to make dua. For example, one may make such a dua: Alhamdulillahi rabbil aa-lameen as salaatu was salaamu alaa rasoolina Muhammadin wa alaa aa-lihi wa sahbihi ajmaeen. O my Rabb! Accept our salats that we have performed. Make our fates and ends good. Bless us with saying Laa ilaaha illallah Muhammadun rasoolullah at our last breath. Forgive our dead ones. O my Rabb! Protect us against the evils of the Devil, of the enemy, and of our nafs-i ammara. Send goodness and good sustenance that has barakah to our homes. Give safety and well-being to followers

of Islam. Confound and devastate the enemy of Islam. Help those Muslims who perform jihad against disbelievers. Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fafu annee. O my Rabb, heal sick Muslims and give a remedy to grief-stricken ones. Allahumma innee as-alukas-sihhata wal aafiyata wal-amaanata wa husnal-khulqi war-ridaa-a bil-qadari bi rahmatika yaa arhamar-raahimeen. Protect us from two-facedness, hypocrisy, conflict, all kinds of illnesses, accidents, disasters, laziness, inability, contemptibleness, oppression, wealth and poverty that lead one astray, the evils of the Devil and of the nafs, the triumph of the enemy, vices, committing bidat, going astray, deeds without ikhlas, all types of sins, disbelief, abject old age, trials that will befall at the time of death, and everything that will negatively affect our worldly and otherworldly lives. Bless us with true faith, good moral qualities, a thanksgiving heart, a tongue that mentions You, a good life that is pleased with qada and qadar, eating less, sleeping less, talking less, laughing less, serving much, deliverance from the torment of the grave and of the terrors of the Day of Judgment, doing deeds with which You are pleased during our lifetime, dying a martyr, and the belief of Ahl as-Sunnah wal Jamaah and repentance at our last breath. O my Rabb, bless us with Your love, the love of those whom You love, and the love of every action that will make me attain Your love. Increase our knowledge, ikhlas, and abilities. Include us among the murad (the selected ones) and the mukhlas (owners of permanent ikhlas). Make us one of those who are generous and have the quality of doing isar (giving others the things that you need; preferring others to yourself). O my Rabb, grant good lives, good moral qualities, a sound mind, good health, well-being, guidance, seeking and finding the true path to our parents, our children, our relatives, our companions, and our fellow Muslims. Amin. Wal hamdulillahi rabbil aalameen. Allahumma salli alaa Allahumma barik alaa Allahumma rabbanaa aatinaa Wal hamdulillahi rabbil aalameen. Astaghfirullah, astaghfirullah, astaghfirullah. Astaghfirullah al-azeem al-kareem alla-dhee laa ilaaha illaa hu, al-hayyal qayyooma wa atoobu ilayh. Question: Is there anything wrong with looking up to the sky during dua? ANSWER It is not correct to lift your head up to the sky when making dua because Allahu taala is free from occupying a place. It is very dangerous to think, as some deviant people do, that Allahu taala is in the sky. A hadith-i sharif recorded by Bukhari strictly forbids looking up to the sky in salat. (Al-Anwar)

Question: As a hadith-i sharif says, Whoever recites the last three verses of Surat al-Hashr in the morning and in the evening will die a martyr, I regularly recite these three verses in the morning and in the evening. When I perform salat in the mosque, the imam recites them and we listen to his recitation. If I do not recite them individually after the imam, will his recitation be enough for me to earn thawab and to die a martyr? ANSWER It is sunnat to read (or recite) the Quran al-karim and fard to listen to it when it is being recited. As the listener earns much more thawab than the reader, it is not necessary for the listener to recite them again. Similarly, if one habitually recites the verses (that begin with) Amanarrasoolu every night, one does not have to recite them again after listening to them from the imam. (Shira) Question: It is recommended in a hadith-i sharif that we should recite the last three verses of Surat alHashr after Salat al-Fajr and Salat al-Maghrib. However, people recite them from the verse (that begins with) Law anzalnaa Similarly, it is recommended in a hadith-i sharif that we should recite Surat alIkhlas 10 times after salats, but you say that we should recite it 11 times. What is the reason for such differences? ANSWER When there are several narrations on a matter, it is preferable to choose the most meritorious one. Accordingly, it is better to recite Surat al-Hashr from the verse (that begins with) Law anzalnaa It is reported that we should recite Surat al-Ikhlas 10 or 11 times after salats. It is better to recite it 11 times. A hadith-i sharif says: (A mansion will be given to a Muslim who recites Surat al-Ikhlas 11 times after Salat al-Fajr.) [Haraiti] (This hadith-i sharif is written on the 382nd page of Ramuz-ul-Ahadith.) Question: It is stated in a hadith-i sharif that whoever says, after completing Salat al-Fajr, Laa ilaaha illallahu wahdahu laa shareeka lah lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu yuhyi wa yumit wa huwa alaa kulli shayin qadeer 10 times while sitting seiza-style without crossing his legs and without talking, he will be protected against all kinds of evils and the evils of the Devil that day, and he will earn many thawab. If one recites it while sitting cross-legged due to pain in ones foot or while exiting the mosque or while sitting on a chair, will one receive the same thawab? ANSWER For every act of worship, there is an azima and a rukhsa way. The method explained in the hadith-i sharif is the best way. One should read the Quran al-karim by sitting seiza-style on the ground, by facing the qibla, and by observing the etiquette of reading the Quran al-karim. So is the case with supplications (dua). One can recite them by sitting on a chair if there is necessity. One is allowed to recite them by heart while walking. The same rule applies to supplications, too. One should recite them by sitting seiza-style on the ground if there is no need to do otherwise.

If one suffers from foot pain or if ones feet are numbed when one sits seiza-style, then there is nothing wrong with one sitting cross-legged. It is permissible, too, to recite them while walking or while sitting on a chair. However, the best method is the one explained in the hadith-i sharif. Question: What is the method of saying istighfar after salat? ANSWER One should say Astaghfirullah three times after salat. It is stated in a hadith-i sharif, Whoever recites Astaghfirullah al-azeem alladhee laa ilaaha illaa huwal hayyal qayyooma wa atoobu ilayh three times after every salat will have all his sins forgiven [Maraqi al-Falah]. For this reason, it is better to recite it fully instead of saying only Astaghfirullah. That it is bidat for a muazzin to recite this prayer loudly is written on the 59th page of the book Al-Ibda. Question: Is it necessary to recite Surat al-Fatiha after reciting the Quran al-karim following salat? ANSWER Whether one recites or does not recite the Quran al-karim after salat, either is permissible. However, as reading the Quran al-karim brings much thawab, it is best to read it if one has time. Thus, one will say the verse (that begins with) Subhana rabbika after finishing the recitation and then will recite Surat al-Fatiha. It is very rewarding to recite Surat al-Fatiha. The following hadith-i sharifs say: (The surah in the Quran al-karim that has the most benefits is Surat al-Fatiha.) [Imam-i Ahmad] (The most virtuous surah of the Quran al-karim is Surat al-Fatiha.) [Hakim] (Surat al-Fatiha is a cure for all illnesses.) [Bayhaqi] (Surat al-Fatiha is a cure for poison.) [Abu ash-Shaikh] When a Sahabi said that he recited Surat al-Fatiha, our Master the Prophet stated: (I swear that Allah did not reveal a surah similar to that surah in the Tawrat [Torah], Injeel [Bible], or Zabur [Psalms]. It is seven verses repeated in salats and of the Mighty Quran, which has been given to me.) [Tirmidhi] When our Master the Prophet was sitting with Jibril alaihis-salam, an angel came and said: (I am giving you the good news of two lights that have been given only to you and no prophet before you was given. They are Surat al-Fatiha and the concluding verses of Surat al-Baqarah. For every letter you will recite from these two surahs, you will definitely be given whatever you want.) [Muslim] (Surat al-Fatiha averts the wrath of Allahu taala.) *Shira+ A snake bit a chieftain. When one of the Blessed Companions recited Surat al-Fatiha, he recovered by

the will of Allah. The chieftain gave him a lot of sheep as gifts. As he did not know whether it was permissible or not to accept them, he asked our Master the Prophet it. The Messenger of Allah asked, What did you recite? When he said that he recited Surat al-Fatiha, our Master the Prophet stated: (How did you know that Surat al-Fatiha is a cure. Accept those sheep, and share them between the people with you.) [Bustan-ul-Arifin] It is written in the book Bariqa: It is better to recite Surat al-Fatiha at occasions where recitation of a dua is recommended. Making dua after salats is established by hadith-i sharifs. Surat al-Fatiha was revealed to tell us the best of duas. When the imam wants the jamaat to recite Surat al-Fatiha, it is good for the jamaat to recite it quitely because it is mustahab to praise Allahu taala at the end of duas. The best way of praising Him is to recite Surat al-Fatiha. *p. 137+ It is permissible to read the Quran al-karim after salats and to recite Surat al-Fatiha on completion of reading the Quran al-karim. It is not a sin not to recite Surat al-Fatiha, but it brings thawab to recite it. Question: Some individuals, saying that it is bidat and haram to say Al-Fatiha and to recite it on completion of recitation of the Quran, cause dissension among Muslims. What is the ruling on it in fiqh books? ANSWER Hadrat Muhammad Masum Faruqi states in the 197th letter of the first volume of his Maktubat: Our religious superiors did not recite Surat al-Fatiha by raising their hands after the five daily salats. It is bidat to recite it after salats for the fulfillment of a need. According to this quotation, what is impermissible is to raise the hands and to recite Surat al-Fatiha after salat for the fulfillment of a need. There is nothing wrong with reciting it if these are not done. Is it bidat or not to recite Surat al-Fatiha after salat and supplications? Hadimi writes its answer detailedly on the 137th page of the book Bariqa. Lets explain briefly: According to the majority of scholars, it is better to recite Surat al-Fatiha at places where it was declared to recite dua. Moreover, it has been declared in hadith-i sharifs to make dua after salats. Bidat means an ibada that is performed without the Owner of Islam permitting it. Surat al-Fatiha descended in order to reveal the best of duas. No scholar said it would be bidat to recite it after salats or duas. It is forbidden for the entire congregation to recite it loudly altogether. When the imam says Al-Fatiha, it is good that everybody recite it quitely. For it is mustahab to do hamd (praising) after duas. And the best hamd is to recite Surat al-Fatiha. It is makruh to recite it between fard and sunnat salats and in order to attain what one desires. (Islams Reformers) It is stated in the passage above that it is good to recite Surat al-Fatiha. However, in common with what was stated in the passage before it, it is stated that reciting it for the fulfillment of a need is makruh. It is also stated that it is not correct to recite it between fard and sunnat salats loudly in chorus.

It is written in Jila-ul-Qulub: When one comes to a cemetery, one should say Assalamu alaikum yaa ahla daar-il-qawm-il-mumineen. Innaa ishaallahu an qareebin bikum laahiqoon in standing position. Then one should recite Surat al-Ikhlas 11 times and Surat al-Fatiha once by saying the Basmala before each. One should approach the grave from the right-hand side of the deceased and from the side where the deceaseds feet are. He greets the deceased. Standing, squatting, or sitting, one should recite the initial or concluding verses of Surat al-Baqara, Surat Yasin, Surat al-Mulk, Surat at-Takathur Surat alIkhlas, and Surat al-Fatiha and then present the thawab of them to the deceased. *As it is seen, Surat al-Fatiha is recited at the end.] It is written in Ey Oul lmihali: After a salat, make dua with the imam and the jamaat by spreading out your arms a little ahead, raising them to chest level, and making your palms face the sky. Say Amin at the end of your dua. On completion of your dua, wipe your face with your hands and say Wal hamdulillahi rabbil aalameen. Recite salawat and Surat al-Fatiha. [It is stated explicitly in the passage above that one should recite Surat al-Fatiha at the end of salat.] Question: Could you please inform us of some duas that we may say after salat? ANSWER There are many duas that we may say after salat. I will mention one of them. Our Master the Prophet said: (O Muadh, by Allah I love you. Do not fail to say after every salat, Allahumma ainnee alaa dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni ibaadatika.) *Nasai+ (It means, O my Rabb, bless me with remembering You, thanking You, and worshiping You well.) In order to become beneficiary of the hadith-i sharif Whoever prays for male and female Believers 25 times a day, he will be included among those for whom sustenance is granted to the world and those whose duas are answered, reported by Tabarani, one should say the following dua: (Whoever says Allahummaghfir lee wa li-waalidayya wa li-usta-dhiy-ya wa lil mumineena wal muminaat wal muslimeena wal muslimaat al ahyaa-i minhum wal amwaat bi-rahmatika yaa arhamar-raahimeen 25 times a day, he will be recorded among those who worship much. Allahu taala will remove hatred and jealousy from his heart. Thawab as much as the number of Believers will be recorded for him. On the Day of Judgment, all Believers will say, O my Rabb, this servant of Yours used to say istighfar for us, so forgive him.) [Miftah-un-Najat] We should be thankful for the state we are in. For example, we may say: Alhamdulillahi alaa kulli haal siwal kufri wad-dalal. It means, Praise is due to Allah in all circumstances except disbelief and heresy. A similar dua with a slight difference in wording is as follows:

Alhamdulillahi alaa kulli haal wa aoodhu billahi min haal-i ahlin-naar. It means, Praise is due to Allah in all circumstances. I seek refuge with Allah from the condition of the people of Hell. Question: When one is making dua, should one keep ones hands inclined toward ones face? ANSWER During dua, the palms should face the sky, not the face. They should be raised to chest level. The hands should not be close together, but they should be apart from each other. (Fatawa-i Hindiyya, Durr-ul-Mukhtar) A woman does not stretch her hands forward while making dua, but she keeps them inclined toward her face. Today, unfortunately, a large number of men make dua in the same way as women do. Question: What is the correct time for making dua after salat? ANSWER Dua is made after tasbihaat (that is, after saying Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu akbar, 33 times each). Question: Should we say the prayer Allahumma antas-salaam wa minkas-salaam only after fard salats? ANSWER After every salat, be it fard, wajib, sunnat, or nafilah, one should say Allahumma antas-salaam wa minkas-salaam tabaarakta yaa dhal jalaali wal ikraam following the salam. After performing post-fard sunnat salat or after performing final salat, one should say Astaghfirullah al-azeem alladhee laa ilaaha illaa huwal hayyal qayyooma wa atoobu ilayh three times. Then one should recite Ayat al-Kursi, say the tasbihaat, and make dua. It is very good to say Yaa Allah yaa Allah yaa hayyu yaa qayyoomu ya dhal jalaali wal ikraam asaluka an tuhyiya qalbee bi noori marifatika abadan yaa Allah yaa Allah when making dua. Question: Is it bidat to say Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu akbar after salat? ANSWER It is sunnat-i muakkada established by ijma (consensus). It is permissible to count tasbihaat on fingers or on a masbaha. The Messenger of Allah saw a woman counting tasbihaat on seeds and did not forbid her. This event shows that it is permissible to count tasbihaat on stones, seeds, or a masbaha. (Radd-ulMukhtar) The words baaqiyaat-us-saalihaat (everlasting good deeds) are mentioned in the Quran al-karim. The Messenger of Allah said: (Say baaqiyaat-us-saalihaat plenty of times. These are tasbih, tahlil, tahmid, takbir, and tamjid.) [Tabarani] [Tasbih means Subhanallah,

Tahlil means Laa ilaaha illallah, Takbir means Allahu akbar, Tamjid means Laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa billah.] It is declared in hadith-i sharifs: (Whoever says Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, Allahu akbar 33 times and completes it with Laa ilaaha illallahu wahdahu laa shareeka lah lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa alaa kulli shayin qadeer after every salat, he will have all his sins pardoned even if they may be as much as the foam on the sea.) [Muslim] (Keep on tasbih and tahlil by counting them on the tips of the fingers. On the Day of Judgment, each organ will be called to account. It will be said about fingers, He used them for tasbihaat. The one who is ghafil [preoccupied with nafs, so forgetful of Allahu taala+ will be away from mercy.) [Hakim] (There is no one better than a person who has grown old as a Muslim due to his takbir, tahmid, tasbih, and tahlil.) [Imam-i Ahmad] When the poor ones said, O the Messenger of Allah, the rich people outdo us in rank and blessings. We perform salat, and they also perform salat. We fast, and they also fast. However, they give zakat and alms, and they free slaves, whereas we cannot do any of them, our Master the Prophet stated: I will teach you phrases by which you will be able to catch up with those whose ranks are higher than yours and by which you will be able to outdo those whose ranks are lower than yours. No one will acquire your ranks except those who do what you do: after every salat, say Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, Allahu akbar 33 times and complete it by saying Laa ilaaha illallahu wahdahu laa shareeka lah lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa alaa kulli shayin qadeer once. When the poor ones said, The rich people perform the tasbihaat as we do, and they outdo us again, the Messenger of Allah stated, This is Allahu taalas gift, and He gives it to whomever He wills. [Abu Dawud] Hadrat Imam-i Rabbani states: A person who is performing salat is entreating his/her Rabb and sees that everything other than Him is equal to nothing. The defects in performing salat are covered with tasbih (saying Subhanallah). In this way, it is professed that not a worthy or perfect worship could be done. Knowing that being blessed with performing salat is through His help and His making it possible, one thanks for this great blessing by saying tahmid (saying Alhamdulillah). And by saying takbir (saying Allahu akbar), it is professed that no one besides Him is worthy of being worshiped. (Vol. 1, Letter 304) Question: Is there anything wrong with saying tasbihaat after salat more than 33 times? ANSWER When saying tasbihaat after salat, one should be careful with the number 33. There are many hidden divine reasons in the commandments of our religion. The specific numbers that have been stated by

Islam are like the dose of a medicine. If one exceeds the recommended dose, one cannot benefit from the medicine. The treasure is at 33. If one goes forward or backward by a meter, one cannot find the treasure. It is bidat to say them 40 times or more instead of 33 times with the intention of earning more thawab. One will not be sinful if one leaves without saying tasbihaat, but one will be destitute of the thawab of sunnat. Question: When the imam starts to make dua, can one who has not performed tasbihaat join the dua of the imam? ANSWER It is better to join the dua after saying tasbihaat. Question: When performing tasbihaat, is it permissible to use the left hand out of necessity? ANSWER Of course, it is permissible. The matters concerning our Master the Prophets beginning good things from the right-hand side, his style of attirement, his eating and drinking habits are called sunnat-i zawaid. There is nothing wrong with omitting them forgetfully or due to an excuse. (Hadiqa) It is sunnat to do good deeds with the right hand. There is no harm in doing them with the left hand, but it is excellent to follow our Master the Prophet in all activities. Question: Do we have to say tasbihaat as loudly as we can hear what we are saying? ANSWER Yes, you do. Question: Which is more rewarding (thawab): counting the tasbihaat on ones fingers or on a masbaha? ANSWER After salat, it is sunnat to count them on ones fingers. However, for those who lose count because of having difficulty keeping ones mind on them, it is more rewarding to count them on a masbaha. For those who do not fail to keep track of tasbihaat, it is preferable to use their fingers. For those who fail to keep track of them, it is preferable to use a masbaha. Contrary to what some people think, it does not go against sunnat to use a masbaha. Question: Is it permissible to use a masbaha made of amber or silver beads? ANSWER Yes, it is permissible. Question: I perform salats slowly. For this reason, when I complete salat and am about to start saying tasbihaat, a person begins reciting the Quran loudly. Should I listen to it and say tasbihaat after the recitation, or should I say tasbihaat while it is being recited? ANSWER It is fard (obligatory) to listen to the Quran al-karim while it is being recited. You cannot earn the thawab equaling it even if you say the tasbihaat for a thousand years because a nafilah act of worship is

not even a drop of water compared with an ocean. For this reason, you should prefer the fard act; that is, you should listen to the Quran al-karim. You should not even perform a nafilah or sunnat salat when the Quran al-karim is being recited. Question: Is it permissible to make dua before or after fard salats by prostrating oneself on the ground? ANSWER One should not make dua in sajda position during salat. One can make dua by prostrating oneself on the ground any time other than during fard salats. However, one should not do it during the interval between a sunnat salat and a fard salat or a fard salat and a sunnat salat. One is allowed to make dua in sajda position during a nafilah salat. Question: When it is very cold in winter, is it permissible to say tasbihaat and the other prayers in bed after performing salat? ANSWER Yes, it is permissible. Question: Is it makruh to always make the same dua after salat? ANSWER It is not makruh if one brings about a presence of heart and mind during dua. What is makruh is to memorize a dua and to say it in a poetic form. That is, what is makruh is to repeat it parrot fashion. However, it is not makruh to always say the same phrases with an attentive heart, so that one knows what one wants. Question: Is it bidat to count tasbihaat or dhikr phrases on an electronic counter? ANSWER Counting something is not an act of worship, but a habitual practice. Riding a camel is sunnat-i zawaid, but traveling somewhere on a car or plane does not go against sunnat. Likewise, counting tasbihaat on an electronic counter is not bidat. However, using such devices in the company of people makes the user the centre of attention. For this reason, it may lead to ostentation and show off, so one should use it in ones pocket or in private. Hadrat Ibn Abidin states: "Our Master the Prophet saw a woman counting tasbihaat on seeds, and he did not forbid her from it. This event shows that it is permissible to count tasbihaat on stones, seeds, or a masbaha." Our Master the Prophet would explain the most basic and important part of a matter. For example, he said, Call out the adhan at a high place. For this reason, it cannot be said that calling it out from a minaret goes against sunnat. A memoir of our spiritual guide clarifies the matter at hand very well: When I was a teacher at a high school, one of my students asked me, Sir, does a Muslim who is killed in wartime die martyr? I answered, Yes, he/she does. He asked again, Did the Prophet inform us of that? I replied, Yes, he did. He continued, Does he die a martyr if he/she drowns in the sea or if

he/she falls from a plane or helicopter? I answered, Yes, he/she does. He said, Did our Master the Prophet inform us of that? I said, Yes, he did. Then he said heroically, Sir, was there a plane and a helicopter then? I explained, Our Master the Prophet was jami-ul-kalim. He stated many facts in one word or sentence. He said, He who falls from a height will become a martyr. Then the student said, Oh, I see. As it is seen, one who falls from a height, be it from a horse, a minaret, or an aerial tramway, and as a result dies will be a martyr. It cannot be said, There were not minarets or aerial tramways then. Question: Which supplication should we say after salat in order to ask Allah for Paradise and in order to be protected against Hell? ANSWER It is stated in a hadith-i sharif: (If a person does not say on completion of salat, "Allahumma ajirnee min-an-naar wa ad-khil-nil Jannata" without talking before it, angels will say, "Woe to him! He has been incapable of asking for protection from Hell." Paradise will say, "Woe to him! He has been incapable of asking for Paradise.") [Tabarani] This supplication means, O my Rabb, protect me from Hell, and take me into Paradise. It may be recited after salat while one is making dua. What is meant by the words on completion of salat is the time that starts after one has said the tasbihaat and made dua. To say it before tasbihaat will be bidat. If one says this supplication after making dua, even after talking, one will earn the reward promised.

Repentance

(Tawbah)

Taken from www.al-islam.org/nutshell O you who believe! turn (in repentance) to Allah a sincere turning; May be your Lord will remove from you your evil (Qur'an, 66: 8)

Said the Prophet of Allah (s): There are four signs of a repentant: 1) He is sincere to God in his actions 2) He shuns falsehood 3) He attaches firmly to truth and 4) He is eager to do good.[Al-Harani, Tohaf al-Uqool, p. 20] Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a) said: 'When a servant turns to God with sincere repentance (tawbatan nasuhan), God loves him and covers him (i.e. his sins) in the world and the Hereafter.' I said, 'And how does He cover him? 'The Imam (a) replied, "He makes the two angels (assigned to write his deeds) forget that which they have written of his sins. Then He inspires his bodily members (saying), "Do conceal his sins," and He inspires the earth's places (saying), "Conceal the sins that he used to commit over you." Then he meets God, at the time that he meets Him, in such a manner that there is nothing to give witness against him regarding any sin."
[Al Kulayni, al Kafi, kitab al 'iman wa al kufr, bab al tawbah, hadith # 1]

The reality of Tawbah

Tawbah means return to the soul's initial spirituality after the light of its human nature (fitrah) and the spirit has been covered by the darkness of sins and disobedience. The human soul in its initial natural state is devoid of any spiritual merits or vices. But it has capability to attain any kind of station and its essence carries an intrinsic luminosity. The commission of sins causes obscurity within the heart, the light of intrinsic nature is extinguished and is changed into darkness. Before total darkness pervades over the tablet of heart, if a person awakens from slumber of negligence, then this results in repentance and the soul gradually returns from the darkness to the light of original nature and its essential spirituality. This is mentioned in the famous hadith from Imam Baqir (a): One who repents from sin is like the one who has not sinned..
[Al Kulayni, al Kafi, kitab al 'iman wa al kufr, bab al tawbah, hadith # 10]

The essentials and conditions of tawbah

Tawbah is not accepted from anyone on the mere verbal declaration, 'I repent.' There are certain essentials and conditions for the acceptance of tawbah, and some for its perfection. These are mentioned below in the following hadith: It is narrated that someone said: 'Astaghfirullah (I seek God's forgiveness) before Imam 'Ali (a). He said to him. "May thy mother mourn for thee! Do you know what is istighfar? Verily istighfar is a degree of the 'illiyyun (people of high station) and it is a word that means six things. First is remorse over the past. Second, the resolution not to return to it ever. Third, to return to the creatures their rights (usurped in the past) so that you meet God Almighty in such a state of purity that no one has any claim against you. Fourth, that you fulfil every duty that was neglected by you, in order to satisfy your obligation in respect of it. Fifth, that you attend to the flesh of your body that had grown on unlawful nourishment so that it melts away as a result of grief and mourning and the skin adheres to the bones, after which new flesh grows there between. Sixth, that you make your body taste the pain of obedience

in the same way as it tasted earlier the pleasure of sinfulness. When you have done these things then say Astaghfirullah!
[Nahj al Balagha, saying # 417]

This noble tradition mentions firstly two essentials (remorse and resolution) then the two important conditions for its acceptance (returning the rights of creatures and then of the Creator), and finally two points for the perfection of repentance.

Tawbatun nasuh (sincere repentance)

According to great researcher al Shaykh al Bahai (ra), there are several meanings of tawbatan nasuh. Few of them are mentioned below: Tawbah that 'advises' the people, i.e. it invites them to simulate him (the repenter) on account of the good effect produced in him or that it `counsels' its performer to root out sins and to never return to their commission. Tawbah that is done purely (khalis) for God's sake, in the same way as pure honey free from wax is called `asal nasuh. The sincerity means that the remorse should be on account of the ugliness of sins or because they are against God's good pleasure and not for the fear of hellfire. The word nasuh is related to nasabah, which means tailoring, because tawbah sews together the body of faith torn by sin, or because it joins the penitent person to God's awliya' (friends) and His lovers in the same way as separate pieces of cloth are joined together by tailoring. Yet another interpretation says: `nasuh' is an attribute of the penitent and tawbah nasuh is a tawbah whose performer admonishes himself to accomplish it as perfectly as it is worthy of being carried out until the effects of sins are totally purged from the heart. This task is only attained by making the soul melt with regret and grief and by clearing the darkness of vices with the light of virtues.

The sooner it is, the better

Success in tawbah, meeting all its conditions is a difficult task, rarely attainable. The indulgence in sin, especially the major and mortal ones, causes a person to become totally forgetful of tawbah. One should do tawbah as soon as possible after a sin is committed. If the tree of sinfulness growing in the orchard of the human heart reaches maturity, its roots becoming strong, the results are calamitous, one of which is to turn away man totally from repentance. Even if once in a while it comes to his mind, he keeps on postponing it from day to next day and from one month to another, telling himself, "I will make a sound repentance at the end of my life and in old age." This is wishful thinking. Such a person cannot perform tawbah after the roots of sinfulness have grown deep into his personality. The springtime for tawbah is the time of youth when the sins are fewer, the inner darkness of the heart incomplete and the conditions of tawbah easier to fulfil. This God given opportunity should be availed at all costs and one shouldnt pay attention to satanic tricks of postponing tawbah. An intelligent person when realizes this fact, certainly abstains from sins and undoes wrongs done by him in the past. His heart would be filled with

remorse resulting in firm determination to quit sinful life. God's graceful help becomes his lot and if he is sincere is his tawbah, he becomes the beloved of God as mentioned in the holy verse: Verily God loves the repentant(2: 222) Said Imam Ali (a): If you want to win His blessings in the next world, than today is the day of preparation while tomorrow is the day of reward. The place to proceed to is Paradise while the place of doom is Hell. Is there no one among you to repent for his deeds before his death, compensate for wrongs he has done and do good before the calamity of retribution descends upon him?
[Nahjul Balagha, sermon # 33]

A call to awaken the heart for Tawbah

O man! How sinful and foolish you are not to know the worth of the bounties of your Provider. After having spent years in disobedience and after prolonged disloyalty to such a merciful Lord, Who has provided all the means of your comfort and ease without that being, na`udhu bi Allah, of any imaginable benefit to Him having violated His sanctities and taken shamelessness and recalcitrance to their extreme, now that you are remorseful, penitent and repentant, God Almighty has taken you for His loved one. What abundance of mercy and what plentitude of bounty is it! O God! We are incapable of thanking You for Your bounties. Our tongues are unable to praise and extol You. All that we can do is to bow our heads in shame and ask Your pardon for our shamelessness. We dont deserve Your mercy. Yet, indeed Your mercy is more abundant and Your bounties are more inclusive than can be described. A wise man should endeavour to intensify the form of contrition and remorse in the heart so that God willing, it enters the burning chamber. That is, through meditation about the terrible consequences of sin, remorse becomes stronger in his heart, thereby voluntarily kindling the holy fire, the fire about which Qur'an says: The fire of God kindled (roaring) over the hearts covered down upon them, in columns outstretched. (104: 6-8) In his heart, burning the fire of remorse will incinerate all his sins and burn away all its rust and corrosion. He should know that were he not to kindle himself this fire in this world and were he not to open upon himself the door of this hell which itself is the main gateway of Paradise he would inevitably pass from this world into the next world to face the terribly cauterizing fire prepared for him there. Thereupon the doors of Hell shall be opened and the doors of Paradise closed to him. O God! Give us a chest lit with the fire of remorse. Set our hearts aflame with the worldly fire and set it afire by throwing into it the sparks of remorse. Remove the corrosion of our hearts and take us from this world in a state of freedom from the consequences of sins. Verily Thou art the Lord of bounties.
[Adopted from Al-Khumayni, 40 hadith, chapter 17, Tawbah]

Conclusion:

Imam Zain al-Abedin (a) said: My God ! You are He who has opened a door to Your pardon and named it 'repentance for You said, Repent to God with unswerving repentance (66: 8). What is the excuse for him who remains heedless of entering the door after its opening?
[Sahifa al-Kamilah, the whispered prayers of repenters]

Ten Incidents to Enlighten the Sleeping Souls

Since the events and anecdotes of the pious are very useful in awaking sleeping souls we present herewith some incidents regarding those who did repentance (Tawba).

1. Wine changed into Vinegar

Sabzewari writes in his book Misbahul Qulb that when the order prohibiting wine-drinking was revealed a caller was sent by the Messenger of Allah (S) who announced that henceforth no one shall consume liquor. By chance, one day the Holy Prophet (S) was passing through a by lane when a Muslim man also entered it carrying a bottle of wine in his hand. He was terrified on seeing the Holy Prophet (S) and he said fervently to the Almighty Allah, I repent for this and I shall never drink again. Please save me from disgrace.

When the Messenger of Allah (S) came near he asked, What is there in the bottle?

It contains Vinegar, replied the man. The Holy Prophet (S) put forward his hand and asked the man to put a little bit on his palm. When the Prophet (S) examined it, it was indeed vinegar. The person was overwhelmed with emotions and he began to weep and say, By Allah! It was wine! But before this I had repented and begged Allah not to disgrace me, He added.

The Messenger of Allah (S) said that it was true, Allah changes the sins of repenters into good deeds. They are the ones whose sins are changed into good deeds by Allah. 2. Repentance is accepted till the last breath A tradition is recorded from Muawiyah bin Wahab in the chapter of the time for Tawba in al-Kfi. He says, We were travelling towards Makkah and accompanying us was a religious old man who did not follow the Jafariyya school of thought. Throughout the journey he recited full prayer (as is the practice among Ahle sunnat). The nephew of this old man was also with him and he was a Shia. The old man fell sick during the journey and he told his nephew to explain to him the Shia faith that Allah Almighty make it a way of salvation for him. All his friends were of the opinion that he should be left to die on his previous belief.

The nephew was not able to accept this and he began to say, O Uncle! After the passing away of the Holy Prophet (S), except for a few people, everyone turned back from Islam. After the Holy Prophet (S), Ali (a.s.) deserved to be obeyed and it was obligatory on the people to follow him. The old man sighed deeply and said, I also have faith in this.

The next moment he was dead. After this we went to meet Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (a.s.). Ali bin Sar related this incident to Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (a.s.). He said, that the old man was among the people of Paradise.

How is it possible, Maula? asked Ali bin Sar. He accepted the true faith only in his last moments? Imam (a.s.) said,

What more do you want from him? By Allah! He has entered Paradise. This shows that there is time for returning to the truth and repenting for sins even till the last breath. (However, one should repent before one is sure of death, as mentioned by us before).

3. A Perfect feeling of Allah (S.w.T.)s fear is Tawba Imam Zainul bidn (a.s.) is quoted in volume 15, page 117 of Bihr al-Anwr to have said,

There was a shroud thief among Bani Israel. One day his companion fell sick and was soon anticipating death. He called his friend, the shroud thief and asked how much he valued him as a friend. The thief accepted that he was a very good friend. The friend said that he had a desire and the thief agreed to fulfil it. The friend showed him two shrouds and told him to choose one for himself so that the other one could be used to bury him But do not reopen my grave after I am buried and make me naked. This was not acceptable to the thief but due to his friends persuasion he chose the better shroud for himself and went away. When the friend died and was buried, the thief said to himself, The dead cannot know that I have broken a promise to him. He began to dig the grave and was about to unclothe it when he heard a scream and the corpse was saying, Dont do this! The thief was frightened and filled up the grave. When his own death neared, the thief summoned his sons and asked them how he had been as a father to them? The sons agreed that he was the best of fathers. The thief said that he had a last wish and the sons agreed to fulfil it. He said that after he died they should cremate him and throw half his ashes into the sea and half into the desert. The sons agreed to do this and fulfilled their promise after the thief father died. However, the Almighty Allah gathered his scattered ashes and made him alive again. Allah asked him, Why did you make such a bequest? He said, By Your Might, I made such a bequest due to the fear of Your chastisement. Allah said, I have pardoned you and changed your fear into safety and also satisfied the people who had claims of rights upon you.

This incident proves that if a person is ashamed of his deeds and has fear of Allah (S.w.T.), the Almighty shall pardon him and also make his enemies satisfied with him.

4. Refraining from sin brings forgiveness Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (a.s.) says in Rawdatul Kfi that there was a hermit in Bani Israel. He was absolutely free from sins. Upon seeing this the head Satan called his cohorts and asked which one of them could mislead this man? One of them volunteered and Satan asked what method he would use? He said through women. The Satan told him that he would not succeed because the person was oblivious to sexual pleasure. Another Satan rose up and said he would deviate him through wine and sensuality.

The big Satan said that he too was unsuitable for this job because the sage was not interested in these things. A third Satan stood up and said that he would cause him to err through good deeds and noble character. The big Satan said that indeed he was fit for the job. This Satan, at once went to the place where the sage was engrossed in his meditation, and stood up beside him and began to pray Salt. The worshipper was feeling sleepy but the Satan continued to perform prayers. When the worshipper got tired he would take a rest but the Satan did not take a break.

The worshipper felt himself inferior and went to the devil to ask him the secret of his stamina in praying. The junior devil did not give any reply and the worshipper reiterated his question. Yet there was no response from the devil. When the worshipper asked him the third time the devil said, The fact is that I had committed a great sin and since then whenever I remember my sin, I get impetus to worship more. The worshipper asked him what sin he had committed so that even he can do it and gain the stamina to worship so much. The devil said, Go to a particular prostitute in the town, pay her two dirhams and fulfill your needs

with her. From where can I get two dirhams? asked the worshipper, I dont even know what a Dirham means. The devil took out two dirhams from under his feet and gave them to the worshipper and also gave him his cloak and sent him towards the city.

The worshipper sought the address of the prostitute. The people guided him thinking that he was going to her to guide her towards morality. The worshipper gave the two dirhams to the woman and asked her to entertain him. The prostitute invited him inside with respect and said, Pious people like you do not visit prostitutes. Why have you taken such a step? The worshipper explained his aim in detail. The woman told him, Actually, avoiding a sin is easier than repenting for it. Because it is not necessary that a sinner will get a chance to repent. I think that the one who has advised you for this is Satan, who has assumed a human form to mislead you. Go back to your place and you shall find him missing.

The worshipper returned home and by chance the prostitute died the same night. In the morning people saw the following inscribed on her door: Take part in the funeral of this woman, She is from the people of Paradise. The people fell into doubt and were so astounded that for Three days they were not able to bury her. Till the Almighty Allah revealed upon His Messenger, Msa Ibn Imran (a.s.) to recite her funeral prayer and also command the people to participate in it. Because she had prevented a servant of Mine from committing a grievous sin. So I have forgiven all her sins and made Paradise incumbent on her.

5. Allah (S.w.T.)s Mercy is Very Vast Tafsr al-Safi mentions under the exegesis of Surah li- Imran that one day Saad Ibn Maaz came weeping to the Messenger of Allah (S). After replying to his Salm the Prophet (S) asked him the reason for crying. Saad said. O Messenger of

Allah! A young man is standing outside the house and weeping upon his youth like a woman mourns the death of her child. He desires to meet you. The Holy Prophet (S) ordered that the young man be presented to him. Saad came to the Prophet (S) with the youth. He saluted the Messenger (S). After replying his Salm the Holy Prophet (S) asked the young man the reason for his grief. Why shouldnt I grieve, said the young man, I have committed so many sins that even a few of them are sufficient to earn me Hell-fire. I am sure I shall be punished for my sins.

The Messenger of Allah (S) said, Have you attributed partners to Allah? I seek refuge of Allah from attributing a partner to Him. Have you murdered one unjustly? No, Allah shall certainly forgive your sins even if they are like mountains, the Prophet of Allah (S) said. But my sins are greater than mountains, said the young man. Even if your sins are heavier than seven earths, seas, mountains, trees and all creatures Allah will condone them. My sins are heavier than all of these, said the youth. Allah will forgive them even if they are heavier than the heavens, stars, Ar sh and Kursi. My sins are more than these. Pity on you! O young man! Who is greater, your sins or your Lord? Hearing this, the young man fell into prostration and said, My Lord is pure, nothing is greater than Him and He is greater than the greatest thing.

Would the High and Mighty Lord not forgive your great sins? asked the Prophet (S). No, said the young man and became silent. Then the Holy Prophet (S) said, Fie on you, young man, can you tell me about one of your great sins? Yes, for seven years I used to exhume corpses and steal their shrouds. One day a young girl from the Ansars died. After she was buried I opened her grave in the middle of the night and removed her shroud. I was about to return when the Shaitan instigated me, I looked at her body and defiled her chastity. When I was leaving, a voice came from behind her head, Fie on you for the chastisement of Qiyma! You made me naked and junub (ritually impure). Fie on you for the fire of Hell. Then he said, O Messenger of Allah (S)! I think I shall not be able to even smell the fragrance of Paradise. What do you think?

O Transgressor! Get away from me, said the Prophet (S), Lest your fire may burn me! How close you are to the fire!

He repeated this sentence a number of times and the youth finally went away from there. After taking some necessary items he went to the mountains of Madinah. He used to tie his hands behind the neck and plead for forgiveness. I am Your sinful slave and degraded servant. I am regretful of my deeds. O Allah! I went to Your Messenger and he sent me away. This has increased my fear. I implore You by Your greatness, do not make me hopeless and include me among Your mercies. He continued this for forty days. Even the beasts began to take pity upon him. After forty days had passed he asked, O my Lord! What is Your decision regarding me. If You have forgiven me, inform Your Messenger about it. If You have made a firm decision to punish me, burn me at once or subject me to some other punishment and save me from the degradation of Qiyma. Upon this, the Almighty Allah revealed the following ayats on His Messenger (S):

And those who when they commit an indecency or do injustice to their souls remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their faults and who forgives the faults but Allah, and (who) do not knowingly persist in what they have done. (As for) these their reward is forgiveness from their Lord, and gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide in them, and excellent is the reward of the labourers. (Surah li- Imran 3:135-136) As soon as these verses were revealed the Messenger of Allah (S) came out of the door reciting the ayats and smiling. He told the companions, Who can tell me about the repenting young man? The companions said, O Messenger of Allah! He is on such and such mountain.

The Holy Prophet (S) went to the young man with his companions and found him standing between two rocks. His hands were tied behind him and his face was black due to the heat of the sun. The eyelashes had fallen due to weeping and he was saying: O Allah! You bestowed countless bounties on me and did favour on me. If I could only know whether my abode is Paradise or Hell. O My Lord! My sins are greater than your heavens, earths, Arsh and throne. If I could only know whether You would forgive me or degrade me on the day of Qiyma. He was repeating these words and weeping. He picked up sand and put it on his head. Looking at his conditions, the animals and birds around him were also weeping. The Messenger of Allah (S) came to him and untied his hands. Cleaned the soil from his head and said,

Young man! Good news for you that Allah has accepted your Tawba. Then he told his companions, You should repent for your sins in this way and recited the above-mentioned ayats. In this way the good news of Paradise was conveyed to the young man.

A point needs to be explained here. The Holy Prophet (S) drove away the young man probably because he wanted his fear of divine punishment to intensify to

such an extent that it could atone for his deadly sins. That the tears of regret may wash his evil deeds and he may qualify for divine mercy. This was exactly what happened. The more earnest a person is in seeking forgiveness the more he shall be near to divine mercy. Hence the driving away of the young man became a cause for the young mans expiation.

6. One should remain between Hope and fear till the end of ones life It is mentioned in Safinatul Behar (Vol. 1, page 127) that the Holy Prophet (S) besieged the fort of Banu Qurayza. Banu Qurayza was a Jewish tribe who lived near Madinah and they were always trying to harm the Holy Prophet (S) and the Muslims. At last the Messenger of Allah (S) decided that there was no solution to this problem except to attack and destroy them. During the siege Banu Qurayza requested that Abu Lubaba be allowed to meet them so that they can seek his counsel. Abu Lubaba was acquainted with the Jews before this. Abu Lubaba was commanded by the Holy Prophet (S) to go to Banu Qurayza. When he went to them, they asked him if it was advisable for them to obey the orders of the Messenger of Allah (S).

He told them to accept the orders of the Messenger (S) without any delay because he had arrived to destroy them. Saying this, Abu Lubaba made a gesture towards his neck. However, immediately after this he began to regret the act and thought that he had committed Khayanat with the Messenger of Allah (S) and exposed his secret. Deep in thought he exited from the Fort but due to shame he could not face the Holy Prophet (S). He went straight away to the Masjidun Nabawi and tied his neck to a pillar. Today the same pillar stands near the tomb of the Prophet (S) and is referred to as the Pillar of Tawba. Abu Lubaba said that he would not release himself from the pillar till he died or the Almighty forgave him. The companions informed the Holy Prophet (S) about this. The Messenger of

Allah (S) said, If he had come to me I would have requested Allah for his forgiveness but since he has directly referred to Allah, He knows better what to decide. Abu Lubaba fasted during the day and in the evening his daughter brought him some food just enough to sustain him. She used to untie him for necessary needs and then tied him up again. This continued for sometime. One day while the Messenger of Allah (S) was present in the house of Umm Salama the verses of Abu Lubabas exoneration were revealed. The Holy Prophet (S) told Umm Salama that the Tawba of Abu Lubaba has been accepted by Allah.

Umm Salama asked him if she was permitted to inform Abu Lubaba for the same? Yes! Why not? replied the Prophet (S). Umm Salama went to her door and informed Abu Lubaba. Alhamdolillah, said Abu Lubaba. When the people offered to untie him he restrained them saying that only the Holy Prophet (S) could release him. The Messenger of Allah (S) arrived and said, The Almighty Allah has accepted your repentance. Now you are free of sins as a newborn child. He asked, Do you permit me to give all my wealth in Sadaqah as a token of thankfulness? No! said the Prophet (S). Then 2/3 of my wealth? No! One third? persisted Abu Lubaba. Finally the Messenger of Allah (S) allowed him to donate one-third of his wealth and then recited the following ayat,

And others have confessed their faults, they have mingled a good deed and an evil one; may be Allah will turn to them (mercifully); surely Allah is Forgiving,

Merciful. Take alms out of their property, you would cleanse them and purify them thereby, and pray for them; surely your prayer is a relief to them; and Allah is Hearing, Knowing. Do they not know that Allah accepts repentance from His servants and takes the alms, and that Allah is the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful? (Surah at-Tawba 9:102-104) The above two incidents tell us that a person who does Tawba must keep in mind two things. First of all he must not consider his sin insignificant. He should be absolutely ashamed of it and he must implore the Lords forgiveness. He must feel the compelling need of divine forgiveness and strive to achieve this with sincerity and continue in this pursuit till he is certain that Allah (S.w.T.) has forgiven him. Generally, this certainty is not achieved even till the time of his death. So he must continue to dread Allah (S.w.T.)s chastisement and implore His forgiveness till the Angels of death will InshaAllah give one the good news of divine forgiveness and bounties of the Hereafter. Secondly, as we already mentioned, it is incumbent on us to have hope and fear with regard to the acceptance of Tawba.

7. Controlling ones carnal desires causes salvation Sayyidul Ulamah Mir Damads grandson Fakhrul Muhaqqaqn quotes Shahd alThani in his book, Fazail-us-Sadt that a man arrived in Egypt. There he saw a blacksmith extracting red-hot iron from the kiln with his bare hands. The hot iron did not affect his skin. Certain that he must be some holy personality he came near and saluted him and said, By the one who has gifted you this ability, please pray for me.

Upon hearing this request the black smith began to weep. Then he said, O Slave of Allah! I am not as you think and I do not count myself among the righteous. The visitor said, But the gift that you have is not possible for anyone except a righteous personality?

It is due to another person, explained the blacksmith. The visitor implored him for further enlightenment. The Blacksmith said,

One day I was busy in my workshop when a most beautiful woman came to me and complained of her poverty and difficulties. I was stunned by her beauty. I told her to satisfy my needs and in return I shall solve her problems. She told me to fear Allah and said that she was not of loose character. Okay! said I, You can go! The woman went away dejected. After a while she returned and said that her need had compelled her to return to me. I took her to a house. We went inside and I locked the door. She asked me why I have locked the door? So that people may not know about us I said. She asked me why I did not fear Allah and I replied, because He is Forgiving and Merciful. When I approached her I found her trembling like a thin twig in gusty wind. She was weeping profusely. What is the matter with you, I asked.

She said that she was fearful of Allah Who was a witness over them. If you leave me alone, I can guarantee that Allah shall make you immune to the fire of this world and Hell-fire, the woman said. The words had the desired effect and I gave up my evil intention. I gave her whatever I had and said that I was releasing her due to the fear of Allah (S.w.T.). The woman returned home satisfied. That night, I dreamt of a lady wearing a crown of rubies. She was telling me, May Allah give you a goodly reward, When I asked her who she was, she said that she was the mother of that poor woman. May Allah keep you safe from the fire of this world and the Hereafter, she prayed. I asked her to which family she belonged and she told me that they were from the progeny of the Holy Prophet (S). I thanked Allah. From that day fire does not affect me. I also hope that the fire of Hell would cause me no harm.

We conclude that Allah (S.w.T.) cools the fire for one who controls his carnal desires and abstains from indecencies despite having all the means. Allah shall accommodate such people in His Mercy. Thus, the Holy Quran says,

And as for him who fears to stand in the presence of his Lord and forbids the soul from low desires, Then surely the garden that is the abode. (Surah an-Nzit 79:40-41) 8. Leaving Sins and respecting the Sayyids cause Salvation The same book mentions another incident wherein Ishaq bin Yaqb Tahiri had a dream in which he saw the Messenger of Allah (S) saying to him, Release the killer! He awoke with a start and summoned his servants and asked them who the killer was and where he was at the moment. The killer was presented at once. He had himself confessed to the murder. Ishaq told him to explain everything truthfully and that he shall be released. He said, I belonged to a group of people with bad morals and we committed fornication in Baghdad where an old woman supplied us with girls. One day the old woman brought a very charming and beautiful girl. As the transaction neared completion the girl screamed and fell down unconscious. When she regained consciousness she implored us to fear Allah (S.w.T.) and leave her alone. This old woman had lied to me that she was taking me to see a play, She explained. She has cheated me. Please fear Allah, I am from the Progeny of Ali (a.s.) and Fatimah Zahra (S).

The prisoner said, My companions did not heed the entreaties of the girl and began to force her into submission. The status of Hazrat Fatima (S) made me feel ashamed of myself and I began to prevent them. They attacked me in return and the wounds are still visible. Finally I struck the head of the rapist and he died, and I succeeded in saving the girl. I sent her home. She prayed for me saying, Allah will save you just as you have saved me. Presently there was a lot of commotion

and my companions caught me as I held the blood-smeared sword. The person whom I had hit was writhing in blood. The bystanders caught me and brought me here. Ishaq said, I forgive you for Allah and for the sake of the Messenger of Allah (S). The murderer said, I too repent of my deeds. By the Holy Personalities who saved me, I shall never commit such indecent acts again.

Allah (S.w.T.) helps those who help the oppressed and give up sinful acts. This man was saved because he had saved the honour of the Messenger of Allah (S). Allah (S.w.T.) rewarded him not only by saving his life but also by giving him the Tawfq to do Tawba.

9. Do not consider a Small thing insignificant The late Hj Shaykh Abbas Qummi (a.r.) writes in his book Manazel khera that a person name Ibn Samad used to take account of himself many times during the day and night. One day when he was calculating the number of days he had lived, he realized that sixty years of his age have passed. He calculated the number of days in sixty years to be 21500. Woe upon me! he said, Even if I have not committed more than one sin everyday, I would still meet Allah with the burden of 21500 sins. As soon as he realized this he fell down unconscious and died within a short time.

Narrations state that once the Holy Prophet (S) during a journey camped at a place absolutely bereft of any vegetation. He told the companions to collect sticks. All of them said that they were in such a desolate place that it was not possible to find any sticks. The Messenger of Allah (S) ordered each of them to collect as many twigs as he can. In the due course each companion brought some sticks and put them before the Prophet (S). When all of them had made a pile of sticks, the Holy Prophet (S) said,

Sins also accumulate in this way. The Messenger of Allah (S) wanted to show by this example that even though we may be unaware of our sins when they accumulate they could make a big heap. If we calculate the sins we commit in our life they shall reach a staggering figure. Thus when Ibn Samad assumed one sin for each day of his life he found 21500 sins in his scroll of deeds. In the words of Sadi the Persian Poet,

An increase of drop on a drop makes a stream An increase of a stream upon a stream makes an ocean.

10. The Bounties of Allah (S.w.T.) cannot be computed Fazil Naraqi writes in Merjus Sadt that a wanton lady named Shauna lived in Basra. She did not miss a single sinful gathering in the town. One day she was passing through the streets of Basra with her maids. She passed by a house from where there was a lot of weeping and wailing. The wanton said, Subhan Allah, what a commotion!

Then she sent one of her maids to find the reason behind the commotion. The maid went inside but did not return. The second maidservant was dispatched but she too did not return. Finally a third one was deputed inside with express orders to return soon. The third maid went inside as in compliance to the order returned soon. She said, O Lady! The weeping and wailing is not for the dead. It is for the living ones. It is the mourning of the evil-doers, the oppressors and the wretched sinners. Shauna became more interested. She said, I am going to see for myself. When she entered the house she saw a speaker delivering a sermon.

People had gathered around him. He was warning them of divine retribution and they all were weeping. Shauna had entered when the speaker was explaining the tafsr of the following ayat.

When it shall come into their sight from a distant place, they shall hear its vehement raging and roaring. And when they are cast into a narrow place in it, bound, they shall there call out for destruction. (Surah al-Furqn 25: 12-13) The ayats had profound effect on Shauna. She said to the speaker, I am one of the evil doers and sinners. Would my Lord forgive me if I repent for my deeds? Certainly! said the speaker, Even if your deeds equal that of Shauna. I am Shauna, myself, said Shauna, and I promise that I shall never commit a sin again. The speaker said, Allah is beneficent and Merciful, if you do good, He shall certainly forgive you. Shauna did Tawba, released all her slaves and started worshipping. She kept trying to compensate for her sins.

At last her flesh sagged and she became extremely weak and thin. One day she noticed her melting flesh and said, O how much my flesh has melted. If this is the condition in this life, what would happen in the hereafter? A voice from the unseen said, Be patient! And keep serving Us like this till you are rewarded on the day of Qiyma.

A couplet:

No repentant sinner comes to Our door, Whose sins are not washed away in the flood of his regret

A collection of various forms of dhikr and tasbih from the Sunnah. - SubhanAllahi wa biHamdihi (Glory be to Allah and Praise Him). Whoever says (the above) at morning and evening time, one hundred times, none shall come on the Day of Resurrection with anything better except someone who has said the same or more.[1] - SubhanAllah wa biHamdihi (Glory be to Allah and Praise Him). Whoever says (the above) a hundred times during the day, his sins are wiped away, even if they are like the foam of the sea.[2] - SubhanAllahi wa biHamdihi (Glory be to Allah and Praise Him) Abu Dharr reported that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said, "Shall I tell you the words that Allah loves the most?" I said: "Yes, tell me, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "The words dearest to Allah are: subhanAllah wa bihamdihi.[3] - SubhanAllahi 'l-`adheem wa biHamdihi (Glory be to Allah, The Supreme, and Praise Him) A palm tree is planted for the reciter [of the above] in Paradise.[4] - SubhanAllahi wa biHamdihi, Subhan-Allahi 'l-`adheem (Glory be to Allah, and Praise, Glory be to Allah, the Supreme) Prophet Muhammad said: "Two words are light on the tongue, weigh heavily in the balance, they are loved by the Most Merciful One."[5] - SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah) Whoever recites [the above] one Hundred times, a thousand good deeds are recorded for him or a thousand bad deeds are wiped away.[6] - La Hawla wa la Quwatta illa Billah (There is no Might or Power except with Allah) [the above is] a treasure from the treasures of Paradise.[7] - SubhanAllah, walHamdulilah, wa La illaha ilAllahu, waAllahu Akbar (Glory be to Allah, All Praise is for Allah, There is No God but Allah, Allah is the Greatest)

The above are mentioned as the four most beloved words to Allah. It does not matter with which one of them is begun.[8] Abu Sa`id reported that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said, "Perform the enduring goods deeds (al-baaqiyaat al-SaliHaat) more frequently." They asked, "What are these enduring good deeds?" The Prophet replied: Takbir [Allahu Akbar], Tahlil [la ilaha illallah], Tasbih [Subhan'Allah], alhamdulillah, and la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.[9] - SubhanAllah, walHamdulilah, wa La illaha ilAllahu, waAllahu Akbar (Glory be to Allah, All Praise is for Allah, There is No God but Allah, Allah is the Greatest) Prophet Muhammad said: For me to say (the above) is dearer to me and all that the sun rises upon (ie the whole world).[10] - SubhanAllah, walHamdulilah, wa La illaha ilAllahu, waAllahu Akbar, wa la Hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (Glory be to Allah, All Praise is for Allah, There is No God but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, There is no might or any power Except with Allah) (The above) are the good deeds which endure [al-baqiyaatuS-SaliHaat] - SubhanAllah, walHamdulilah, wa La illaha ilAllahu, waAllahu Akbar, wa la Hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (Glory be to Allah, All Praise is for Allah, There is No God but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, There is no might or any power Except with Allah) Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud reported that the Prophet said: "During the Night Journey I met Ibrahim (alayhis salam) who said to me: O Muhammad, convey my greetings to your Community, and tell them that the Paradise is of pure land, its water is sweet, and its expanse is vast, spacious and even. And its seedlings are SubhanAllah, walhamdulilah, wa la ilaha ilAllah, waAllahu Akbar (the above).[11] - Alhamdulilah (All Praise is for Allah) - Verily the best supplication is (above).[12] - La illaha ilAllah(u) (There is No God But Allah) The best form of remembrance is (above).[13] - La illaha ilAllah(u) (There is No God But Allah) Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet said: "When a servant of Allah utters the words la ilaha illallah (there is no God except Allah) sincerely, the doors of heaven open up for these words until they reach the Throne of Allah, so long as its utterer keeps away from the major sins.[14] - La illaha ilAllah(u) (There is No God But Allah)

Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet said, "Renew your faith." "How can we renew our faith?" they asked. The Prophet replied: "Say always: la ilaha illallah."[15] - La illaha ilAllahu, waHdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul Mulku, wa lahul Hamd, wa Huwa ala kulli shaiy'in Qadeer (There is No God But Allah Alone, who has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the raise, and He is Able to do all things) Whoever says the above ten times, will have the reward for freeing four slaves from the Children of Isma'il .[16]

- La illaha ilAllahu, waHdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul Mulku, wa lahul Hamd, wa Huwa ala kulli shaiy'in Qadeer (There is No God But Allah Alone, who has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the raise, and He is Able to do all things) Whoever says the above one Hundred times, has the reward of freeing ten slaves, a hundred good deeds are recorded for him and a hundred bad deeds are wiped away and he has gained refuge from the devil that day until evening and none shall come with anything better except someone who has done more.[17] - La illaha ilAllahu, Wahidda(n), Ahada(n), Samada(n), lam yatakhidh sahiba(n). Wa la walada, wa la yak(n)ul-lahu kufuwan Ahad (There is no God except Allah, the One and Only, the Eternal, Who has not taken a partner nor a son. And there is none like unto Him) Whoever says the words above ten times, then 40,000 (forty thousand) good deeds will be recorded for him.[18] - Astaghfirullah al-'Adheemal-ladhi la ilaha illa Huwal Hayyul-Qayyum wa atubu ilaih (I seek the forgiveness of Allah the Mighty, Whom there is none worthy except Him, the Living, The Eternal, and I repent unto Him) Whoever says the above words, Allah will forgive him even if he deserted the army's ranks.[19] - Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta, Anta Khalaqtani wa ana abduka, wa ana 'ala ahdika wa wa'dika mastata'tu, A'udhu bika min Sharri ma sana'tu, abu'u Laka bini'matika 'alaiya, wa Abu Laka bidhanbi faghfirli innahu la yaghfiru adhdhunuba illa anta (O Allah! You are my Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but You. You created me and I am Your slave, and I am faithful to my covenant and my promise as much as I can. I seek refuge with You from all the evil I have done. I acknowledge before You all the blessings You have bestowed upon me, and I confess to You all my sins. So I entreat You to forgive my sins, for nobody can forgive sins except You.) The above du'a is known as the Sayyid al-Istighfar and is the most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah. Whoever says it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same

day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise.[20] If someone implements ten verses of the Qur'an, He/She will not be considerate amongst the negligent on the Day of Judgment.[21] If someone implements one hundred verses of the Qur'an, He/She will be considered among the obedient on the Day of Judgment.[22] If someone implements one thousand verses of the Qur'an, He/She will be amongst the extremely rich on the Day of Judgement.[23]

Re: How To Repel Poverty.

Aren't many of these ahadith considered dhaif or mawdu? Like the one about reading surat alwaqiah and the one about istighfar (can't quite remember where I heard this)? And I found this regarding the hadith about reciting "subhanAllahi wa bihamdihi, subhanAllahil Azim, astaghfirullah" before the fajr salah: The first hadeeth was narrated from Ibn Umar, who said: A man came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and complained to him of poverty or debt. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to him: What about the prayer of the angels and the tasbeeh of all creation by means of which Allaah sends down provision from heaven? Ibn Umar said: I said: What is that, O Messenger of Allaah? The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) sat up straight, as he had been reclining, and said: O Ibn Umar, from the break of dawn until Fajr prayer say: Subhaan Allaah wa bi hamdihi, subhaan Allaah al-Azeem wa astaghfir Allaah (Glory and praise be to Allaah, glory be to Allaah the Almighty, and I ask Allaah for forgiveness), one hundred times, and worldly pleasure and comfort will surely come to you, and for every word that you say, Allaah will create an angel who will glorify Him, and you will have his reward until the Day of Resurrection. This hadeeth was narrated by three isnaads, all of which are false and fabricated.

Still sensitive to praise and dispraise? Bismillah. O son, I'd be lying if I say I am insensitive to praise and dispraise. Maybe I am insensitive to praise but I still get sensitive when it comes to dispraise. Well, this is what Ghawth al-Azam has to say about this:

As long as you are given to this world and to creatures, you would be sensitive to both praise and dispraise, because you are living through your lower self, your passion and your natural inclination. When your heart attains to your Lord ('Azza wa Jall) and He takes charge of you, you will rid of your

sensitivity to praise and dispraise and you will thus be relieved of a heavy burden. If you work for this world depending on your might and strength, you will lose, be torn apart, tire and be dissatisfied. Similarly, if you work for the hereafter with your strength you will lose. When you work for the True One, open the door to livelihood by the hand of His strength and trust in Him and open the door of acts of obedience by the hand of His guidance. Once you have attained to the spiritual station of seeking Him, ask Him for strength and truthfulness in asking for His strength and His help. Place the feet of your heart and your innermost being firmly in His presence and give up all preoccupations with this world and the hereafter. - Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani

O son, let nothing leave a mark on our hearts save Allah. Let there be no other patterns on our hearts save Hu. Posted by E. Ismail No comments: Labels: Good counsel, Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani

Loving the old

Bismillah.

O son, I have no special quotes for you today.

Today I just want to show you how much love and joy the elderlies have to share with us. Tok Teh is a close buddy of my mother. Everytime we visit her, she would either be praying or making zikr or sharing laughter with the neighbors as she eagerly waits for her Shabi Arus (Wedding Night). She is worried that we might not be around on her big day though.

Tok Teh exudes so much love that everytime after meeting her I feel like I am reborn into a bright new world filled with rainbows.

May Allah grant her the best of husnul khatimah and prepares for her the most beautiful abode where she would frolic happily in green silk gown, and her neck adorned with pearls and rubies. Oh how stunning she would be, just like her younger days when she was one of the most gorgeous girls in our village. Then again, she is eternally elegant to all who love her. Perchance, the du'a below is one of her beauty secrets.

Allah hummaj 'al au sa'a rizqika 'alaiya 'inda kibari sinni wan qitho'i 'umuri O Allah! Expand for me Your provision till my old age and till the end of my life.

Seeing none but Him Bismillah.

One mu'aleem whom I love said:

Allah 'speaks'. How does He speak? Not a branch moves without His order. You will not sleep or walk without His orders either. His orders or instructions are his qalam (speech). That should be your aqidah (religious stand).

When you look at the rambutans (a tropical fruit), you should 'see' Allah. You see people getting married, you should see Allah. Only then you have shuhud (witnessing). Do not question His af'al (actions). But be careful, He will question your af'al!

You must continously say in your heart, Allah, Allah, Allah... Get rid of everything else from your heart. May Allah make your heart clean so that only His Name occupies your heart. So that you witness only Him, see only Him. So I am telling you, you must be a salik. You must do zikir nafi (denial): La ilaha illAllah Then you must do zikir isbat (proclamation): Allah Allah... which is ism zat (name of His essence). You must also say other zikir nafi such as: La maqbud illAllah When you say this, you must truly be in love with none, save Allah. You should not be in love with gold, people or clothes. I see that you now have many lovers in your heart. You have many fears too. So you must deny and get rid of all that - LA! (No!)

You should say: La La maqsud illAllah La mawjud illAllah maqbud illAllah

La mawjud illAllah is shuhud wahdatul zat. When you see a tree, you see the essence of the tree which comes into existence by virtue of His Essence, therefore you must be able to see His essence. La maqbud illallah is shuhud wahdatul af'al which is witnessing His actions.

Shuhud is is the fruit of a pure and genuine aqidah. You will have attained it when you are able to see wahdaniyat (His Oneness/Omnipotence/Omnipresence/Hu Ahad) that for anything and everything, it is He who determines. To achieve that, I keep saying that you must be salik, that you should be 'walking' towards Allah in accordance to the shari'at (the religious laws) and sunnah (the Prophetic traditions).

Fana (annihilation) means that you see nothing as being the acts of akwan/makhluk (created beings). When your witnessing (shuhud) becomes continuous/perpetual, your heart will be freed of seeing the acts of the creations. You believe in your heart that it is all His actions. This is the penultimate of one's aqidah. Baqa means that you will remember none save Allah. So again, fana is when you deny (nafi) that things happen on their own accord through makhluk (created beings) while baqa is when you acknowledge (isbat) solely Allah who creates all. This is the highest aqidah and iman.

So recite: 1. La ilaha illAllah. La maqbud bi haqqin illAllah. 2. La ilaha illAllah. La maqsud illAllah. 3. La ilaha illAllah. La mawjud illAllah. After having denied all, you should move on to profess (zikir) Allah, Allah, Allah...

Wallahu a'lam.
May I be forgiven for any errors in transmission.

The elect among us

Bismillah. Someone asked me recently whether my guru was genuine. And another tariqa follower (not Naqshbandi) had also asked me whether my other guru was genuine. Needless to say I got disturbed and upset when people questioned people whom I respect and love. I just wish those who have doubts about anyone would be a gentleman and meet, and speak with the person themselves. But I doubt they would do that.

I am naive. In many instances I simply follow my heart. When I meet some wonderful religious people I just submit myself easily because they are simply beautiful beings and they are irresistible! When they speak, their words penetrate your deepest heart and you just cannot deny the truth. O son, walk and search for your guru. That is if you want to reach to the spiritual world. Listen to the words of the venerated Fariduddin Attar:

"After the Qur'an and the sayings of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w, there is not any discourse that is more beautiful than the discourse of the friends of Allah. This is because their speech is a reflection of inner divine knowledge. It is not the words of a learned person; rather their speech is a gift from Allah. For this reason, they are called the heirs of the prophets. The hearts of those touched by their speech become full of divine inspiration. They are re-energized as they fill with light and spiritual secrets are revealed to them. In the process of this transformation they are protected from the whispers of Satan as they are freed from enslavement to mundane desires.

The saints reflect the qualities of the prophets; some of them reflect the qualities of Adam, some of them reflect the qualities of Ibrahim, some reflect the qualities of Musa or Isa while some reflect the qualities of Muhammad s.a.w.

Some of them are people of knowledge, some of them are people of love, some of them are people of social interaction while some of them are people immersed in reunion with Allah; some of them reflect no qualities, that is they are hidden in nothingness."

Bless the generous Bismillah. May Allah bless all those who are generous! One philantrophist from Europe had offered piles of wonderful books for distribution in this land. One of them is From the Garden of the Mathnawi, Tears of the Heart. I was speechless with joy when a sister handed them to me. MashaAllah, thank you!

May I quote one saying of Mawlana Rumi which surely refers to people whose hearts are as fertile as theirs: "Does a stone blossom even in the spring time? Be so that emerge in many colors." as roses from and the other soil flowers you

Indeed to please the Almighty means pleasing people. And I am very pleased to have this book in my hand. May Allah bless all those who are generous!

"Thus, the poor are the mirror of divine mercy and generosity.

Those who are with Allah or lost in the existence of Allah are in a state of continuous generosity." - Rumi, quddisa sirruh, quoted from 'Tears of the Heart'. Posted by E. Ismail 2 comments: Labels: Books, Favorite Sufi Quotes

On witnessing Bismillah. This is a partial transcript of a lesson by one mu'aleem in Malaysia. I am not going to mention his name or else his 'ardent' students might question me for sharing this. I am doing this for the sake of friends who due to distance and circumstances could not attend the majlis ta'lim and for friends who did attend but needed a summary to aid their understanding. Bismillah.

He said: You must have a guru whom you love. You must know him well and recite al-Fatihah for him. As far as 'ilm ruhaniah (knowledge of the spirit) is concerned, you need a guru, you cannot work at it on your own.

Tasawwuf haqiqat (the reality of sufism) by description is to look at something with the physical eyes. By definition it means seeing and understanding Allah in your heart - his name (asma), attributes (sifat) and essence (zat).

Shuhud wahdatul af'al means that you understand that He is the only doer of all actions e.g. sickness, happiness etc. You must learn this first before you progress to shuhud wahdatul sifat and shuhud

wahdatul zat. You must keep witnessing Allah with sir/asrar, with the eye of your heart (fu'ad). This is an honorable state of a sufi. If your heart has not experienced this state of witnessing, it shows that you have not yet 'arrived'. Your heart should be in a constant state of witnessing. Then Allah will carry you on to a higher plane. If you attained shuhud you will achieve true freedom. You will not be a servant to any other than Allah. This brings you to fana (annihilation). Nothing remains in your heart save Allah. No makhluk (being) resides in your heart. Hence, you return to alam lahut where you made the pledge when asked Alas tu birabbikum? (Am I not your Lord), when you promised to obey Him and not your brain or desires. You would then understand His right over you and your right over Him. When you understand His rights, you will truly appreciate His bounties on you, your food etc. Every little nikmat (blessings) you get is from Him. You will be grateful and honor His blessings. When you eat, you would eat to the last bit and when you drink, you drink to the last drop. Honoring His bounties means honoring Him. Never glorify makhluk (people), but always recognize and acknowledge everything as His actions. But keep it in your heart, never profess it with your tongue. You should speak just like everybody else but in your heart you know that all is His actions. Do not reveal the secret. For example: when you see people getting divorced, you should know in your heart that it is all His doings. Do not question why. Always say La hawla wala quwata illah billah or Inna lillahi wa inna ilai hi rajiun.

One who has attained mushahadah will not dare act or presume things ahead of time, ahead of His takdir (decree). Until and unless Allah reveals His secrets or plans, one should not forecast or try to foretell His actions. That is why you are not allowed to be a fortune teller. Only then your tawhid becomes pure.

If you truly have accomplished witnessing, you will not go after wordly attractions. You will only be obsessed with Allah because you fully understand that everything that you have is on account of Divine Intelligence. The sweetness of sugarcane comes not from itself but from Him. You see His attributes alBari', al-Musawwir - His Essence at play. He decides on your looks from azali. Your parents could not determine your appearance. And you cannot change your looks. All that you have will be returned to Him so prove yourself with obedience. Improve your obedience. Go back to worshipping Him. Return to Him. Repent!

He decides our qadar - our provisions, our characters, our status. We did not achieve all these with our own effort, neither did we inherit it nor did we achieve it with our own intelligence. Never feel inferior with your appearance or poverty. Never feel small when you are with those who are more attractive or richer than you. You must be a salik so that you would be freed of akwan and aghyar; so that you would truly glorify your Lord and be sincere towards Him. When you give sadaqah (gift) to your neighbor, you are actually giving Him. Any good deeds you do, you do it for Him. So you do things lillahi taala with utmost sincerity.

Witness His acts so you glorify Him and not people. When you perform ibadah (worship) you would do it for His sake and not to show off to people. Surrender yourself to Him completely. That is what taslim is all about - surrender your affairs to Him. Let not your affairs be tainted by makhluk, nafs or even your intelligence (akal). As taught by a certain Habib Muhammad, your actions must be based on: 1. Bismillah Rabbi Allah 2. Bismillah hasbi Allah 3. Bismillah tawakaltu allAllah 4. Bismillahi iqtasamtu billah 5. Bismillahi fawadtu amri illAllah 6. Bismillah il tajatu illAllah 7. La hawla wala quwwata illah billah

Be an ahlillah (people of the Lord) who is 'crazy' (intoxicated) about his Lord, not one who is crazy about asbab such as gourmet food, yacht and all the things that the wordly people are crazy about. ___________________________________________________________

Shabi Arus - a wedding celebration of another kind

Bismillah.

Inna lilllahi wa inna ilai hi ra ji'un! Today, a dear family friend (my mother's best friend, our neighbor) has gone to a better place. As I was driving 360km alone, I thought of how beautiful friendship can be. My mother yet again showed me what love is all about. Today I witnessed how moved she was when Latifah left her. It was a sad parting for all who knew and loved Latifah but she looked happy because it is in fact her Shabi Arus, her Wedding Night. She looked so pretty and gay to leave her sorrows behind, to be freed from the cage. I could sense it when I planted a goodbye kiss on her forehead. May Allah unite her with all the blessed souls in the highest Heavens. Ameen.

I am reminded of Shabi Arus, a term I had learned from reading Mawlana Rumi a while back. How Rumi had warned people not be sad about his passing from this physical realm. That death is in fact a celebration! O Mawlana, I marvel at how open and generous you had been in your teaching and sharing. Imagine if you were to keep all that avalanche of love and beautiful mysticism all to yourself?

O father Rumi, you were so right in your lament: O my Lord, if your mercy is reserved only for those with pure hearts, then where will the sinful find refuge?

O Almighty Allah! If you accept only the pious people, then to whom will the guilty turn in prayer? Surely, you are the Most Compassionate!

O Mawlana, how heart broken you would be if you knew the sickness of this age; that some of the 'pious' and 'learned' people dislike other people to be pious and learned too. How they maintain that certain teachings are exclusive, that their tariqa is more exclusive than others so that people should not know about their 'exclusive practises'!

Oh...where will the sinful find refuge? Where will the guilty turn in prayer? And how will the ignorant learn if some 'pious' and 'learned' people keep the awliya all to themselves? Perhaps they don't want the heavens to get too crowded? But havent't they heard about Bayazid Bastami? How Bayazid had prayed so that Allah would make his body so vast that it would fill the entire Hellfire, thereby leaving no place for other sinners? Oh shame on you who are selfish, so self centered, thinking you are holier than others! May Allah forgive all our sins. Conclusive argument remains with Him. Posted by E. A gift from heaven Bismillah. O son, I see not a blessing coming from elsewhere except Him. May you learn these wirid and practise regularly. Know that I love you, so I love to share whatever little knowledge I pick up along the way. I don't care if other people wants to eavesdrop or peep in this space I have created for you O son. All that is good is from Allah.

May Allah increase us in knowledge and give us the strength to be istiqamah in our zikr. We are nothing. So we count on the blessings from all the awliya whom we love. May Allah make us love all those whom He loves, always and forever.

1. Zikr La ila ha ilAllah

(700x or 1300x within 24 hours)

2. Salawat Allahumma salli wa sallim ala Sayidina Muhammad miftahiba bi rahmatillah solatan wa salaman ad da imai ni bi dawami mulkillah ada dama min 'ilmillah
(11x or 111x times morning & evening)

3. Istighfar Astaghfirullahal azim allazi la ila ha illa huwal hayyul qayyum wa atu bu ilaih min kulli zanbim azim wa min jami 'in al mu'assi wal qotoya sirran wa jahran zahiran wa bathinan qaulan wa fiq lan sam'an wa basiran tawbatan nasuha
(11x or 70x or 100x morning and evening)

Note: As mentioned in the earlier posting: three things could replace a guru murabbi - zikr, salawat and istighfar. So if you cannot find a guru murabbi to guide you, be sure to make zikr, salawat and istighfar. Posted by E. Ismail 5 comments: Labels: Du'a, Good habits

A salik vs a murid Bismillah. Shaykh Abdul Aziz (Baba Aziz) during his lecture series at KL Ba'alawi last weekend continued speaking on the subject of tasawwuf based on Kitab Qatrul Ghaisiah ('Raindrop of Sufi Knowledge).

Baba Aziz recapitulated the 7 aqabahs or mountains that a salik (seeker) must conquer in the quest towards his goal - aqabah tawbah, aqabah awa'id, aqabah awarid, aqabah bawa'ith, aqabah bawadih and aqabah al-hamd wa-shukr. These aqabahs are like great mountains to be conquered only with huge efforts. A salik is one who is focused in his journey towards Allah. He leaves all ugly behaviors in preference for good morals. He is one who receives guidance from a guru who is murabbi. As a salik he would begin his studies mastering tasawwuf ibadah from classic kitab such as Minhajul Abidin. He is wary of pitfalls on the path caused by illnesses of the heart such as riak (pride) and ujub (self glorification). His knowledge would increase as would his gnosis (makrifah). He will attain the true degree of sincerity (ikhlas) and his worship would become pure. He will be blessed with 'ilm ladunni, the highest kind of knowledge direct from His Presence because his heart is pure. He harbors hope soley in His Lord. He fears none except Allah. He longs and love only Allah. Wat taqullah wa yu'al limukumullah means one must first have iman (faith) before taqwa (God-fearing). Without taqwa one will not be granted ilm asrar or the secret knowledge. Always keep your wudhu' (ablution) and recite salawat continuously especially salawat 'azamiyah. This particular salawat carries a lot of weight as it would take you to the presence of Rasulullah s.a.w. So do not be careless about how you spend your time. Prove your taqwa. Prove yourself with a credible faith. By having a pure faith, taqwa, and sincerity, Allah will grant you makrifah (gnosis). It is important that you avoid having negative impression about your Lord. Just because He contricts your provision or give you illness, you start having ill feelings about your fate. If indeed you have makrifah you will not be restless, you will be calm and say Alhamdulillah regardless of your conditions. If you but know, He will in fact raise your maqam after each and every tests. If you behave in a positive manner based on your understanding of this branch of knowledge He will grant you more knowledge that is beyond your imagination.

I think most of you are still murid, not salik. I say that because you cannot even find the time to make zikr Allah. You are suffering from sickness typical of a murid. You gather knowledge but you do not practise what you know. You must understand that husnul Islam, the best of Islam is one who leaves all that are worthless or unbeneficial to him. So go back to Allah. Become a salik. Be sure to get tarbiyyah (guidance) from a guru who is himself a jazbah and a salik. You must practise what you know because that is a pre-requisite for you to attain real makrifah. He says: wa'alam nahu min ladun na ilma - "We teach him (he who practises what he knows) with one 'ilm (knowledge)", and that is called ilm' hal. You will know this when you reach this maqam. If you truly love Allah, you will appreciate your time. You will not want to waste it. You will occupy yourself worshipping Him. If you want to know what karamah is, look at the degree of your servitude. Check yourself, see how obedient you are. Do you always keep your wudhu'? Do you make an effort to tie that "black sheep" - your tongue? You can do that by holding a tasbeeh so that you would automatically remember to make zikr. It is not good enough to be a murid. You must be a salik. The Sufis make 13,000 zikr Allah per day. The fuqaha (the ordinary person) should at least make 3,000 zikr. Learn the famous ratib such as al-Idrus, alAttas and al-Haddad and recite them regularly. It is a waste of time to just be a murid. Please by all means become a salik. Remove all traces of mazmumah (bad qualities) from yourself and replace them with sifat mahmudah (good attributes). Allah is the ultimate guide who could bring us to goodness. But go find a guru tarbiyyah who could prescribe you with what zikr, what salawat and what istighfar to do. When you find one and do as told, you will attain nafs radhiah. You are now at mutmainnah or mulhimmah where you get inspired to do good and regret your wrong doings. You must strive above this level. There are three practises you could do if you cannot find guru murabbi. You could do istighfar, salawat and zikr La ila ha illAllah 1300 times a day. Do this morning and night until they become more tasty than the best food that you have eaten in this world. Make them your preferred food. Clean, purify your heart so that nothing is there, save Allah. Wallahu a'lam.

A point of view Bismillah.

O son, a week break from Lisan al-Din had given me time to listen and reflect.

So I listened to caring people who cautioned me about the presence of some un-friendly Sufi monitors. No I am not a Sufi and they are not monitoring me. I just happen to love the Sufis and unfortunately that might be a problem to some people who don't. I therefore, adjusted my sail since I could not control the wind; made a few changes here and there but you should not mind because Lisan al-Din after all is for my sons. And on Lisan al-Din love rules!

I also listened to requests from like-minded friends who asked me to keep sharing (not teaching) especially one particular blessing that I have been given in the last weekend. Alhamdulillah wa shukrulillah. What happened was, one wali loves one mu'aleem so he taught him some wirids because he wanted him purified and be good. That mu'aleem in turn love a bunch of us so he taught us the wirids so we too would be purified and be good. So what I will do is put that love and sharing on record here later and ignore any clouded minds out there.

Yes of course you could learn durood/salawat, istighfar and zikr from anywhere and anyone. But some prescribed wirids have got to be more precious than others as we got to learn them from extraordinary people whom we love and who love us. May Allah continue to raise our gurus' maqam, give them a long healthy life so we could benefit from their presence and barakah for the longest time. And may Allah continue to make our hearts an abode for awliya, Rasulullah s.a.w and Allah s.w.t.

And the disclaimer for Lisan al-Din remains La hawla wala quwwata illah billah hil 'Aliyil 'Azim There is no power and no strength save with Allah the High the Great.

Yours sincerely, E. Ismail

Lisan al-Din in seclusion 16 - 22 March 2010 Bismillah. Please be informed that Lisan al-Din publisher is in seclusion for a week beginning from today 16th March to 22nd March 2010. She wishes to thank all the regular visitors for their support and encouragement.

Like a hypocrite, you offer your excuses "I am so busy providing for wife and children, I don't have time to scratch my head. How could I have time to practice religion?" "I cannot escape from feeding my family, I must seek lawful earnings tooth and nail." You have an escape from God - but not from food. You have an escape from religion - but not from idols.

- Rumi in Mathnawi

You are a hypocrite!

Bismillah. O son, I think I have been a hypocrite. And I think I cannot be wrong because this morning as I flipped open Jila' al Khatir (Purification of the Mind) seeking for some counsel from Ghawth al-Azam, Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani, I saw this paragraph shouting at me.

Have you not known that the hypocrite "is in the lowest depth of the Fire"?! (Qur'an 4: 145) Surrender and then repent. Do something before death surprises you, before you are overtaken suddenly and end up in regret when regret is of no good at all. I know you but I cannot point to you. We are commanded in the Law to leave you and others unexposed. But I speak out, though, without mentioning names. I refer to you indirectly, without pointing to you explicitly. As the saying goes: "My words are in fact aimed at you, so listen to what I am going to say to my neighbor." The slave may need to be beaten with a stick but a nod should be enough for a free man. The True one (Ta'ala) looks at the private and public lives of the creatures and also at their hearts. He does not accept from them other than that which they offer to Him and do for the sake of His countenance. Do not put a show of artificial behavior, do not cheat and do not try to conceal your faults for "He knows the secret and that which is yet more hidden." (Qur'an 20:7) "He knows the deception of the eyes and that which the chests conceal." (Qur'an 40:19) So with that I shall take a break from posting entries on Lisan al-Din for ONE week or until I could write to you with a clear conscience and with better sincerity. InshaAllah. La ila ha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz zalimin. May Allah continue to guide us, keep us on the Straight Path and grant us husnul khatimah. Ameen. Madad Ya Sayyidi, Madad Ya Rasulullah!

Accuse your own soul! Bismillah.

Know that although obedience is the path to God and the means of approach to His Holy Presence, it may induce in those who are liable to distraction many things which are reckoned among the major sins, such as ostentation, self-admiration, arrogance, the feeling that one has obliged God, forgetfulness of His grace in granting (acts of disobedience), and so forth. These may result in the deprivation of the obedient man's reward, and may even lead to painful punishment. The believer who is intent on following the path of seriousness and is concerned to attain salvation should always accuse his own soul (nafs) and refuse to give it the benefit of the doubt; he will ask forgiveness even for his acts of obedience, even if no contravention has outwardly occured, fearful that his soul may have led him into one of these hazardous faults. You now know why one should seek forgiveness even for acts of obedience.

Something even more subtle than this may befall the people of gnosis under some circumstances: they may notice that they have come to find comfort in their virtuous acts (rather than in God), or to rely on them (rather than on God); and they then turn back to Him in repentance, asking for forgiveness, The same things may again befall them while they pass through the noble stations and states with which they are invested; and they have then to repent and ask forgiveness for them.

For the people of God who divest themselves of all attachment to the worlds, sin is to attend to other than God, whatever this 'other' may be. We see them fleeing fearfully to God and seeking refuge in Him from states which, if experienced by others would have been considered great acts of devotion, such as for instance, setting one's hopes in one's acts of disobedience and having thoughts of fear (of God) or of renunciation. It is in this context that you should understand the saying: "The good deeds of the righteous are the evil deeds of those who are brought nigh to God." (the muqarabeen).

Were it not that the Path is fading away and the lights of realization are setting, we would have said some astonishing things on this subject. So take heed people of intelligence!

Shaykh Sihab al-Din al-Suhrawardi, may God have mercy on him has said: "There are certain factors which impair spiritual stations, for these latter may be infiltrated by extraneous elements, and the gnostic may fail to perceive this while still in them, and only become aware of this upon rising from one station to a higher one, at which, experiencing an imperfection, he looks back at the former with better insight and returns to it in order to repair the defect and render it sound. This can only be done through repentance and asking for forgiveness."

This is a summary of what the gnostics have taught, with some explanantions and clarifications. Some have interpreted the saying of the Prophet s.a.w: "My heart becomes covered, so that I ask God for forgiveness 70 times a day," along the lines suggested by Suhrawardi, but in fact it is far from bearing any relation to whatever to the Muhammadan rank which embraces all perfection of form and character. I have another interpretation for it, which I can only divulge verbally to those worthy to receive it. And God knows best.

- Imam al-Haddad

O son, I think I understand a little better now what Ustaz Shamsul has been saying and repeating that "The good deeds of the righteous (the saliheen) are the evil deeds of those who are brought nigh to God (the muqarabeen)." So never be satisfied with what you think you have achieved. Verily it is not our 'achievement' even. Instead, be harsh on your own soul. May Allah make us worthy of receiving gnosis of the finest kind and may our outward obedience reflect that of our inward state. Ameen Allahumma Ameen. Posted by E. Ismail No comments:

Give and be a rasheed - Mawlana Shaykh Nazim

Bismillah. Sultan al-Awliya Mawlana Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani began his sohbet standing and glorifying the Lord: Ya Kareem, Ya Sultan, madad, La ilaaha illa-Llah, La ilaaha illa-Llah, La ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah `alayhi salaatullah.

O Attendees, Assalaamu`alaykum! Give a little bit of care when you are looking and asking to hear something. Give a little bit more care, cut yourself from everything that belongs to this world and come empty. If anyone comes empty, they may fill it with heavenly powers. If you are coming full, what may they give to you? Because we are now in contact with heavenly beings and we are asking for heavenly support for all of us, not only the handful of people here. We, all of us, are in need and we are asking that heavenly support to give much, much, more power in growing heavenly power for ourselves.

This association is granting the attendees heavenly support, giving much more power and making them to become closer to heavenly stations, yes. And as much as you are giving care, you are taking much more. If you are occupying yourself with something around yourself or through your life, you are going to be supported as you are asking. If you are giving whole care for yourself, you will be given a full support. If you occupy yourself with something else, you may take half the support or you may take a tenth of the support. If you are never interested, you will take nothing. Therefore, as much as you are giving your care and attention, you are taking more!

If you are in a place where there is a heap of gold and silver and the holder is saying, Take as much as you like. It is for you and it is free! If you can carry a heap of gold, get another, still Allah Almighty is giving endlessly wa ladayna mazeed, And We have more to come.

O People! Give more and take more! Give one and take ten. Give ten and take a hundred. Give a hundred and take a thousand. Give a thousand and take one hundred thousand. Give one hundred thousand and take one million. Give one million and look for ten million that comes to you! Why are you being so hasees, bakheel, miserly? Why? Anfiq bi-laa laa, Donate endlessly. Do you think that when

you are giving, you lose your Lord's grant to you? No. Allah (swt) is giving for one, at least ten. Give ten, get one hundred. Why are you not urging people to give?

O People! Give more and take double on double. Why? If you are believers, why are you saving through banks and treasuries, why? And there are people in need; why are you not giving? Give! Are you not trusting what Allah Almighty is saying to you? He is giving ten times more! I am shouting to kings, to presidents, to the rich ones, saying: Don't save your money through banks' treasures. Don't occupy yourself with something else!

Why are you not urging the rich ones? So many hundreds, thousands of rich ones in Saudi Arabia, in the Arab Peninsula, in Kuwait, Qatar, Dubai and where everyone has billions through banks! Why?! Give, and believe in your Lord's declaration, or believe in what He is promising to you! He is saying, wa ladayna mazeed, And We have much more to come. Mazeed is never coming down, there is never going to be less treasures. Why are you saving, saving, saving millions, ten millions? Millions of people cant find something to eat, but you are eating lamb and delicious food. Why are you not sending? Send!

We must say A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem. The biggest treasure is for us to say Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem. Take Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem from your saved money and give, Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem. Don't say your treasures will diminish. "Yes, it may be less here, but it will grow up through akhirah, through the heavens. Why are you not saying?"

These associations could make hearts hayyin layyin, soft and tender. Encourage them to give, give! Don't worry, dont worry. Dont say, Our provision is going to be less. No! Man zaada lillah zaadahullah, Whoever donates in Allah's way, will be rewarded more by Him. Who is giving for Allah more and more, the grant from Allah will get more and more and more for you.

When you are lying in the coffin, finished! They will take your ring, your ear rings, your very, very expensive watch, taking it from your hand. Taking everything from you! They are not saying, He was a king, we may leave this on him. No, they are taking everything and you are going naked, with your body covered with ten yards of cloth.

O People! Before Judgment Day comes, you have a chance to give for Allah, give, give, give, as it is coming through heavenly knowledge, this you must say, Salafi `ulamas, to all Wahhabi people who have treasures, to write in golden letters in front of their sitting place: anfiq bilaal wa laa takhaaf man dha 'l-`arshi iqlaalan Give without (saying) 'no' and do not fear from the Possessor of the Throne to be in loss. That must be written! Don't say to me, That is not fard, obligatory. Now it is obligatory and you must give, you must give. You cant save billions or trillions, you must give. It is haraam (to store wealth). Why are you not saying that storing wealth is bida`, against Shari`atullah?

Dont say, We are giving every year our zakaat. What? Thirty-nine for yourself and one for Allah? Arent you ashamed to give thirty-nine for yourself and one for Allah? What is their mentality? Make it the opposite! Give for yourself one, for Allah thirty-nine. Wa laa takhaf man dha 'l-`arshi iqlaalan (do not fear from the Possessor of the Throne to be in loss). That is holy shari`ah.

Abd (means) servant, and everything that he has, belongs to Him, and everything that he is carrying is for his owner or for his master. Why are you not saying this? Salafi `ulamas, you dont know this? That judgment you know or you do not know? Say to people, Give thirty-nine for Allah and one for you. What are you going to say, that it is bida`? Shariah is the real adab of the servant for his Sultan. Allah Almighty is granting to you, so give, and give and give because if you are giving Allah Almighty is not making it less. Wa ladayna al-mazeed. Allah Almighty is saying on behalf of Himself: Don't fear that when giving, you will get less of My treasures. No! I am the Lord of Heavens! I am the Lord of the Whole Creation! I am that One that is giving what they are in need of and My treasures are never getting less! Not even the size of an atom, what you give is not getting less. Because if it is getting less even one atom, then it is going to be finished. But what is in Allah Almighty's treasures is never-ending, never finishing. That is the reason why He is saying:

Wa ladayna al-mazeed There will be more and more in Our Divine Presence (Qur'an 50:35)

I will give you more and more in My Divine Presence. Allah (swt) will reward you more as a result of your donation in His sake. Why are you not giving that ayat? When servants have been granted from Endless Treasures through heavens, through Paradise, they are asking, hal min mazeed, No more after

this, O our Lord? and the Lord of Heavens is saying, Never-ending treasures, are for Me. No one knows, I am only knowing, I am the Lord of Everything. I am the Creator, and I have Endless Oceans from everything that is never-ending. Hah!

Fa maa `inda Allahi baaq What Allah owns and rewards you with is Everlasting. (Qur'an 16:96)

What Allah Almighty has is forever, from pre-eternal up to eternal, never-ending. What it is empowered in this life is not going to be acted in akhirah, but in the Eternal Life. This is a temporary life; it may be a million years or a billion years, it may be more and more billions of years old. For all of them, a limit is written, but for Allah, al-mazeed is endless. You know nothing; you know according to your ability, your capacity to understand.

O People! Give to Allah, keep for yourself a little bit. But say, O my Lord, everything You granted to me from Your grants, I owe it to You. Who am I to say that I am giving? Allah Almighty is saying, Haadha a'taa'una, This is My grant to you. What you have is from My grant to you. O People! My grant is never-ending, never-ending. SubhaanAllah, SubhaanAllah, SubhaanAllah, SubhaanAllah, SubhaanAllah, SubhaanAllah.

The worst characteristic of our egos is to be greedy, greedy, greedy. For what are you going to be greedy? Your Creator is saying, Is'al tu'ataa, Ask as much as you can ask, and I will give to you. Allahu akbar! Allahu akbar! One who is rasheed (rightly guided) is never greedy. Ar-Rushd (maturity/ripening) is the highest level of our good characteristics. Rasheed is he who understands something about what Allah Almighty is saying.

Wa idhaa sa'alaka `ibaadee `annee fa innee qareebun ujeebu da`wati 'd-daa`ee idhaa da`aani fa 'lyastajeeboo lee w 'al-yu'minoo bee la`llahum yarshudoona And when My servants ask you (O Muhammad) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the du`a of the supplicant when he calls on Me. So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright. (Qur'an al 'l-Baqarah 2:186)

You are Arabs, you know this ayah, O My servants, if you are asking something from Me, I am asking also; you must run to what I am ordering you, to make it. Imaan is to believe in Allah Almighty and our beliefs are at the lowest level, lowest level, and to become raashidoon, Allah Almighty is asking His servants to reach the level of rasheed, as the Holy Qur'an is declaring: Alaysa minkum rajulun rasheed

"Is there not among you a single right-minded man?" (Qur'an 11:78)

Rasheed is the highest level that a person can reach: ar-rushd. We are such useless ones! I am asking Allah Almighty that at least we may reach on the level of rushd, who is on the level to be 100% kamaal, perfect from every jawaanib (sides) in all his behavior - perfection.

Alaysa feekum rajulun rasheed? Isn't there a man among you who understands? A rasheed understands such a thing. I am asking to Salafi `ulamas, Allah Almighty is asking to people, in Holy Qur'an also, alaysa feekum rajulun rasheed? That one who asked was a believer, haneef, real belief. But he was hiding and saying, O People! Alaysa feekum rajulun rasheed? No one in his mind can understand about what the Lord of Heavens is sending.

Maqaam ur-Rushd (Station of Maturity) is the highest level servants can reach. Rushd, what does it mean? You must know. If not look in qaamoos (dictionary). If you could not find it, look in tafseer, commentaries of Holy Quran. Dont say, This is shirk and dont say, This is kaafir. No. Alladhee yafhamu 'l-katheer? Isn't there a person who understands me well? Hundreds of thousands of ones are bringing from the Holy Qur'an and its endless treasures, lu'lu, pearls and diamonds. Why are you saying this is not a real diamond, it is only plastic? Don't say that!

If you are saying, Qul haatoo burhaanakum, Bring your proofs, that is making my heart to be in satisfaction. If not, you should be responsible in the Divine Presence, and the Divine Presence is never accepting you, sending you to angels.

O People! Come and hear, come and listen to the endless oceans through the Holy Qur'an. It is always giving people a refreshment and giving a young power to them for understanding and to be in pleasure and to be pleased with such a hidden treasure from the Holy Qur'an.

May Allah (swt) forgive me and forgive all listeners and Salafi `ulamas also, and give us hidden treasure of the holy verses, endless hidden treasures through holy verses.

O People! Take your adab with the Holy Qur'an and take your adab with such people who are bringing such strange meanings full with such a power and lights to take away from your faces darkness and give to you heavenly lights!

O my Lord, forgive me, and forgive Salafi `ulamas, Ya Rasulullah!

(Mawlana Shaykh stands and sits then sing:)

Dome, dome, dome, dome Dome, dome, dome, dome Dome, dome, dome, dome Dome, dome, dome, dome

(Mawlana sings in Turkish:)

Yaa Muhammad, canim arzular seni Dost Muhammad, canim pek sever seni Padah konmaz saraya hane mamur olmadan kenz almaz ol gnlden ta ki pr nur olmynca

Yaa Muhammad, my soul is yearning for you Yaa Muhammad, you are my true love A king is not put in a palace before it is adorned A heart's treasure is unlocked Huu, huu, huuu, huuu, huuuuuuuuuuu... Fatihah. only when that heart is purified

As-salaamu `alaykum. This is Allah's grant for tonight, subhaanAllah, subhaanAllah, subhaanAllah, Oh, Yaa Rabbee! ___________________________________

Know when to speak Bismillah. Abu Abdullah Ahmad bin Asim al-Antaki says: "The most harmful time for speech is when silence would be better for you and the most harmful time for silence is when speech would be more fitting for you and more necessary."

O son, do not be one who is talkative. You must know when to speak and when not to speak. A sign of one who has intelligence is that he knows the sign of intelligence is not in always having something to say.

Frankly, I was feeling somewhat 'numb' like I do not have an opinion or preference on what to say to you today. Then I was reminded by Shaykh Hisham's sohbet on one the four things Sayiddina Ali karamallahu wajhah had practised. He said, one should be silent and observe the surroundings before one make one's move. I think that is common sense and yet most people like I get clumsy and jumpy. The Sufis on the other hand, observe the present moment attentively and only act upon getting an ilham or inspiration to say or do anything. They are truly the son of the moment and fulfill the rights of the

moment as per the Divine order. That much I observe from our gurus, so let us all take heed. May Allah grant us tawfik to follow in the footsteps of His pious and gnostic servants. Ameen.

Jumaah Mubarrak! Salam warahmatullah. ____________________________________

The rhythm of the Naqshbandi Bismillah. "When (by means of music) the various limbs of the body become properly collected, hatred and aversion is removed and concordance (hukm al-tawafuq) appears." - says Ahmad Tusi in Bawariq.

O son, Limbs sway nimble as hearts and souls danced to the tunes of qasidah and hadrah for nights on end. That's what the Naqshbandis of this land have been up to since 10 Rabi'ul Awal. The Tariqa's Mawlid series of celebration is graced by the presence of Shaykh Adnan Kabbani and wife Hajjah Halima. (pic below)

So how do we explain the effects melodies could have on one's soul? "What causes mystical states to appear in the heart when listening to music (Sama') is a divine mystery (sirr Allah) found within the concordant relationship of measured tones (of music) to the (human) spirits and in the spirit's becoming overwhelmed by the strains of these melodies and stirred by them..." - says Imam al-Ghazali.

Yes, stirred, we all Naqshbandis have been for many glorious nights - all for the love of Rasulullah s.a.w. Overwhelmed by feelings for him that one's own self dissipates in the praise for the Beloved of Allah and unite as one voice of adoration - prince and paupers alike.

To quote Ahmad Tusi again: "When many melodic arrangements and spiritual harmonies - that is to say music are evoked within someone, his nature comes to prefer them over all else."

And the preference over all else is that of attuning to the spiritual harmony of none other than Muhammad al Mustafa! Allahumma salli wasallim wabarik alaih wa ala alaih. Posted by E. Ismail No comments: Labels: Majlis Zikr

Conclusive argument remains with God - Shaykh Muhyiddin Ibn al-Arabi Bismillah.

A spiritual intuition will reveal that that which was necessary to affirm His Divinity is none other than the Reality Himself, and that the Cosmos (of created beings) is nothing more than His Self-Revelation (to Himself) in the forms (determined) by their eternally unmanifest essences, which could not possibly exist without Him. It will reveal also that He manifest Himself variously and formally according to the (inherent) realities and states of the essences all of which is understood together with the knowledge that, in relation to us, He is the Divinity.

A further spiritual intuition will show you our forms manifest in Him, so that some of us are manifest to others in the Reality, know each other, and distinguish each other in Him. There are those of us who have spiritual knowledge of this mutual recognition in the Reality, while others have not experienced the plane on which this occurs. I seek refuge in God lest I be of the ignorant.

As a result of the last two intuitions it is known that we are determined only through ourselves through ourselves (as essences); indeed, it is we who determine ourselves through ourselves, which is the meaning of the words God's is the conclusive argument, (Quran VI:149), that is, against the veiled ones when they ask the Reality why He has done with them things contrary to their own aims. And He made their affair difficult for them. (Quran LXVII:42), and this is the truth revealed to the gnostics. For they see that it is not the Reality that has done with them what is claimed, and they see that what was done with them came from themselves, for His knowledge of them is according to what they are themselves (in their eternal essences). Thus their complained is nullified, the conclusive argument remaining with God.

We are His as has been shown, As also we belong to ourselves. He has no other becoming except mine, We are His and we are through ourselves. I have two aspects, He and I, but He is not I in my I. In me is His theater of manifestation, And we are for Him as vessels.

In each other, all along

Bismillah.

To the one dwelling in my heart makes the chambers burst into quiet laughter your understated humor

tickles a lover's veins so joy streams all over

love which is in silence can never be wrong for all that is unseen and unspoken is from the One, the Strong

Rumi is so right Lovers don't finally meet somewhere, they're in each other all along...

Proof of tawba (repentance)

Bismillah. Habib Najib bin Toha as-Seggaf, at the closing of the 8th Mawlid Kubro celebration hosted by AlJenderami Foundation in Dengkil, Malaysia, reminded the audience on the importance of keeping one's tawba. He said, "you should be grateful that Allah has invited you to this auspicious occasion, celebrating the mawlid as proof of your love for Rasulullah s.a.w. You may have come to such an event many times, so with such great blessings that you have been given, there must be evidence of your attachment to Allah and Rasulullah s.a.w. If you truly love Allah and Rasulullah s.a.w you would not go

back to your old poor habits, you would progress and become a better person. You will not engage in deeds that would incur the wrath of Allah. You will not commit anything that would displease Rasulullah s.a.w. There must be some kind of proof of your tawba, of you turning from the old you, to the new you. So keep your repentance and be grateful for Allah's blessings."

O son, what else could I add to this strong message from such venerable 'aleem and 'areef like Habib Najib, other than quote the sayings of Imam al-Haddad who said: "Remorse (nadam) is the turning of the heart, in sorrow and regret, away from something which the servant has committed, and which angers God the Exalted, such as sins or the neglect of obligatory acts. It may also occur following an excessive involvement in permissible pleasures or the neglect of supererogatory devotions. A sincere remorse is one which leads to perservering in earnest, and avoiding neglectfulness. When sound, it includes nearly all the conditions of repentance (tawba), which is why the Prophet s.a.w has said: "Remorse is repentance." Those who are remorseful about their misbehavior, but still persist in it, are only jesting, and their remorse will not avail them.

Seeking forgiveness (istighfar) means asking God to forgive, which in turn means His concealing the misdeed (from the eyes of others). When God, by His grace, forgives a sin, he neither exposes its doer to shame, nor punishes him for it, whether in this world or in the next. The highest kind of forgiveness is for God to place a veil, a barrier, between the servant and sins, until it is as though he were free of them. In the context of Prophethood this veil is termed as 'inerrancy' ('isma); and in that of sainthood, 'protection' (hifz). This is the meaning of God's saying, addressed to the Master of Inerrant s.a.w: 'Ask forgiveness of your sin, and for believing men and women.' (Qur'an 47:19) And: 'That God may forgive you, your former and subsequent sin.' (Qur'an 48:2) It is well known that the Prophet was not liable to sin. But He here reminds him of His favouring him with His protection from everything that would distance him from Him, and commands him to pray to Him in that manner; prayer in this context being the consequence of thankfulness and thankfulness being the cause of further increase. 'If you are thankful, I shall give you more.' (Qur'an 14:7) And God knows best." O son, how many times have we failed to thank Him for covering up our sins? How many times have we committed sins, repented and went back to doing them again?! How many times have we knowingly revealed our misdeeds to people when Allah Himself has promised to veil our sins? By doing so, we have shamed ourselves whereas God in His mercy commits to grant pardon and not shame us in this world and in the hereafter! Allahu Allah! Astaghfirullah al-Azeem allazi la ilaha illa huwal hayyul qayyum wa atu bu ilaih min kulli zanbin 'azeem

zahiran wa bathinan sirran wa jahran tawbatan nasuha! _______________

Shaykh Adnan Kabbani's plea to Sultan al-Ariffeen Shaykh Ismail

Bismillah.

Alhamdulillah wa shukrulillah for having been invited to pay respect to Sultan al-Ariffeen Shaykh Ismail at Pulau Besar - an island off-coast Melaka, Malaysia. Leading the ziyarah was Shaykh Adnan Kabbani, one of the senior caliphs of Naqshbandi Tariqa.

It was my second visit, Alhamdulillah. It was more special this time as we got to go inside the maqam's compound and face the front side of Sultan al-Ariffeen's grave. Shaykh Adnan Kabbani started his heartrending du'a saying that people who are veiled will never see and understand things that people who are kashaf (un-veiled) could see and hear. So they would never understand the realities of life in the unseen realm. Shaykh Adnan made a long plea saying we were not there to make request for dunya matters; we were not after material benefits; we were there to ask so that with his barakah we could purify our hearts and change our bad manners to good manners and to present us in a pure state to Rasulullah s.a.w. What we were concerned about said Shaykh Adnan was that with the blessings from the Prophet s.a.w, Allah s.w.t will look at us. There is nothing greater than to be looked upon by Allah the Almighty and to be forgiven for all the sins that we have committed. All that we cared about was His forgiveness. All other petitions regarding wordly matters are insignificant and worthless. Instead, we pleaded for help in spiritually matters for our hearts to become a house for awliya, a dwelling place

of Rasulullah and an abode of Allah; that we are always in a constant state of remembrance. We begged that with his barakah as the descendant of Rasulullah s.a.w we would be in the presence of Rasulullah s.a.w. Ultimately, Shaykh Adnan prayed so that we could all be neighbors to the awliya, to Prophet Muhammad s.a.w and Allah 'Azza wa Jalla. That is all that we aim for and nothing else matters.

Allahu 'Alam bis sawwab. Al-Fatihah.

"Follow Prophet's Four Traits" - Habib Najib bin Toha

Bismillah.

Habib Najib bin Toha of Solo, Indonesia (pic) was the last to give a tausiyah (lecture) at Al-Jenderami's Annual Mawlid Grand Celebration last night. Before him was Shaykh Mahmud of Madinah whose countenance, nur and words pierced my heart and made me tearful that I could not put down in writing the pearls of wisdom he was pouring. Oh such barakah and shafaat Shaykh Mahmud has brought from holy land Madinah! I promise I will try to get a copy of his speech for you later InshaAllah.

Habib Najib bin Toha was no less eloquent and impressive. He had spoken on four traits of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w that we should all try to emulate - a teaching attributed to Imam Junaid who had said:

"If you had these four traits of Rasulullah s.a.w Allah will raise you to the highest heaven though your knowledge may be very little. 1. Al-Hilm (gentleness) To have hilm means you know how to place something at its rightful place. It means being gentle to all people in the right manner befitting the person and circumstances. When Prophet Ibrahim a.s. prayed to Allah to give him a son who is saliheen (pious/devout) - Rabbi habli minas saliheen. O Lord grant me a righteous son (As- Safaat 38:100), Allah answered his prayers saying, 'I will give you a son who is halim" though he asked for a son who is salih. This is because the character of saliheen is already embedded in halim. One who has halim knows how to appreciate other people. When he meets someone older, he shows great respect and when he meets the youngsters, he treats them with love.

2. Tawadhuk (to have a humble heart) He who wishes to emulate the Prophet's character of tawadhuk should not have pride in his heart. He should never think that he is better or superior than others. He must be humble enough to help his wife. The Prophet s.a.w was always helping his wives around their homes. He said, 'the best man among you is the one who is best towards his lady.'

3. Husnul khulk (best behaviors) It is quite all right if you had little knowledge but you must have good akhlak (behavior). Having a good behavior means that you show a genuine appreciaton towards people and anyone. The Prophet s.a.w treated his companions in the best manner so much so that each one felt that he was special to the Prophet and that he was giving a special attention to them.

4. Generous The last of four characters of the Prophet which we must follow is that of generosity. Generous enough that we should not show that we love the world more than we love the One who owns the world. So that we are always giving and keeping Him in our hearts and seeing all as His bounties, hence be generous in sharing with other people.

O son, may we pay attention to these four traits of Rasulullah s.a.w and try inculcate them truthfully, all for the love and respect for Rasulullah s.a.w the best of all of creations. Sallu alan Nabi!

Sheikh Fahmi Zamzam on the virtues of Al-Waqi'ah Bismillah. O son, This 56th verse of the Qur'an, despite its meaning - 'The (Inevitable) Event' (Al-Waqi'ah), is overshadowed by it's 'enriching' virtue. It is common knowledge that reciting this verse on a regular basis will enrich its reciter or at least protect him/her from poverty - God willing. And everybody is known to have passed on this tip to everybody else. I have to admit that every now and then I do jump on this 'Gold Rush' bandwagon. But as I have mentioned many times before, when you learn something from a qualified guru with silsilah (authentic lineage), the effects of the lesson is extraordinary - it sticks in your heart and you will have the tendency to be istiqamah (consistent) in practising what's been taught bi-iznillah.

I wish to share what I have recently learned from Sheikh Fahmi Zamzam al-Banjari an-Nadwi alMaliki on the virtues and the prescribed practice for 'Al-Waqiah'. Apart from barakah from venerable Shuyukh, the weight of this lesson, in my opinion, lies on the meanings of the du'a that should accompany each recitation.

a. Recite Surah al-Waqi'ah daily, between Asar and Maghrib. b. Upon reciting the verse, say this specially composed du'a, as prescribed in 'Provision for the Hereafter' - a Malay book called Bekal Akhirat compiled by Sheikh Fahmi as instructed by his guru, the honorable Sayyid Muhammad bin Alawi al-Hasani al-Maliki (1944-2004):

Allahumma sun wuju hana bil yasari O Allah protect the dignity of our face because we are among those who are wealthy wala tu hina bil ikhtaari

do not humiliate us on account of our poverty fanas tar zikhu min tholibi rizkhika from asking from people who they themselves ask provision from You wanas taqtifu shiraa ra qolkhika at times we have to submit our necks to your evil creations wanash taqilu bihamdi man aqthonaa and we might have to praise them unnecessarily wa tub tala bizammi man mana 'ana and when they do not provide us, we become angry wa anta min wara-i zaalika kullihi ahlul 'atho-i wal man'ie and You are the One who could give and withold our provision Allahumma kama sunta wujuhana 'anis sujudi illa laka O Allah protect our face from prostrating to your creations fasunna 'anil hajati illa ilaika to fulfill our wish, except You bijudika wakaramika wa fadhlika ya arhamar rahimin by Your generosity, by Your bounty, by Your compassion, by Your mercy # Allahumma aqnina bihalalika 'an haramika wabitho'atika 'an maqsiyatika wabifadhlika 'amman siwaka O Allah enrich us with all that is halal and not haram, with obedience and not disobedience, by means of Your bounty and not anyone else. wasallah hu'ala Saidina Muhammad wa'ala alihi wasohbihi wasallam walhamdulillah hirobbil 'alamin. c. Recite du'a # for 70 times on any day. d. For men: having completed your Friday prayers, before moving away, recite dua # for 5 times after reciting 7 times of al-Fatihah, al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas. For ladies: do the same after zohor prayers on Fridays. e. Additionally, recite: Allahu Ya Ghani Ya Hamid, Ya Mubdi Ya Mu'id Ya Rahim Ya Wadud for 70 times.

O son, The Prophet s.a.w had taught this du'a (#) to a sahabi assuring him that even if his debts were as high as Mount Sabir in Mina, Allah would help him repay the debts. I have heard about the merit of this du'a from someone else before, but having heard it from Sheikh Fahmi gave me a stronger conviction that Rasulullah s.a.w would never ever say anything that is untrue and that with a strong certainty on the words of the Prophet s.a.w. you will most definitely benefit from the du'a as well, bi-iznillah.
Note: The translation of the above al-Waqi'ah du'a is only an approximation. I'm hoping one of you readers to help fine tune. Click here for Lisan al-Din related posting on teachings by Sheikh Fahmi Zamzam - Talqin Zikir.
