Why?
Why? Because I dont know anything about Latin and you are a genius. Were going

Nothing special. Do you want to study together? Lets go to the beach where we can
be alone. We can study anytime.
He was staring at her.
Hey! ...er? trying to think of her name.
She swallowed, trying desperately to remember, herself.
Catherine, she said quickly. Catherine Alexander.
Yeah. How about this place! Its terrific, isnt it?
She tried to put eagerness in her voice to please him, agree with him, woo him.
Oh yes, she gushed, it's the most

Im in the back here, Jerry. Hey, you like bloody beer, Jerry?
No, fine.
Beer and tomato juice, no?
Fine.
Thats why Im here today. We spent a lot of time together, Mat. You know how I
care about you. You know how I care about your son. Finally Im quite concerned because if you stay with SMI I think your son will...
We decided to stay with you.

Pardon me.
I came to fire you, Jerry. Thats real. You should say something.
Oh, shit! In a crowded restaurant, you know, there wont be a scene. You ungrateful, anxious...
You did it all yourself.

Mrs. Woods, youve been so kind. I cant thank you enough. Theres just one thing.
When Nuala came to see you Friday morning with that handwritten will, didnt you
question her? I mean, werent you surprised that she was so anxious to have it witnessed
and notarized, so intent on having it done at once?
It seemed to him that an eternity passed before Mrs. Woods answered, her response
measured. Well, yes, I did wonder. At first I just thought it was impulsive. Nuala had
been very lonely since Tim died and was absolutely ecstatic that shed found you. But
since her death Ive been thinking that there was more to it than that. It was almost as if
Nuala knew something terrible might happen to her. (Clarke, 45)

Of course, she replied as with relief and slid into the drivers seat. And thank you,
she added, knowing that she had absolutely no intention of using the key, or of ever
coming back to this place if she could help it.
See you soon, I hope. Say hello to Chief Brower for me.
She turned the key in the ignition. Good-bye, Earl. It was very interesting.

Winfried Kretschmann ist kein Alleinunterhalter. Wenn der baden-wrttembergische

DIFFICULTIES IN TRANSLATION
OF SOCIOcPOLITICAL TEXTS
A.N. Mamedov
West European Languages Chair
and a technique of their teaching
Moscow State Pedagogical University
Vernadskogo ave., 88, Moscow, Russia, 119991
Belonging of Russian socio-political texts to publicistic style assumes being guided by functional
approach in order to find most adequate linguistic means by transfer of pragmatic meaning of the source
text. Intralinguistic meaning can slightly remain by the interpretation of German texts. Lexical and grammatical transformations help preserving semantic-syntactic structure of the target text which means achievement of the same communicative effect by the translate which is being achieved by the source text.
Key words: translation, socio-political texts, sporting and playing metaphors, pejorative vocabulary,
composites, stylistic devices of expansion, lexical and grammatical transformations.

Home Rules
Some of the rules of Englishness do not require years of participant observation research to discover. The privacy rules, for example, are so obvious that you could spot
them from a helicopter, without even setting foot in the country. Hover above any English
town for a few minutes, and you will see that the residential areas consist almost entirely
of rows and rows of small boxes, each with its own tiny patch of green. In some parts of the
country, the boxes will be a grayish colour, in others, a sort of reddish-brown. In more
affluent areas, the boxes will be spaced further apart, and the patches of green attached
to them will be larger. But the principle will be clear: the English all want to live in their
own private little box with their own private little green bit.

.
1. Within this fragment, the concept of Englishness
1) refers to street behaviour in England.
2) defines the cultures based on the English language.
3) comprises everything that has to do with street naming.
4) is restricted to the way the English people arrange their streets and houses.
2. Some specific inner features of the English
1) are carefully concealed by the local residents to mislead foreigners.
2) can only be discovered after years of a close involvement in the local everyday
life.
3) are easily seen from above while flying over English towns.
4) can only be pointed out by English taxi drivers.

, :
3. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE to the text?
1) The Hungarian humourists description of English towns is supported by real facts.
2) Neighbours houses can be helpful while looking for an address.
3) George Mikes thought it illogical to give the same street a different name
every time it slightly turned.
4) Taxi-drivers gave the author the most detailed information on the numbering
and naming of English streets and houses.

,
, :
4. The phrase obsession with privacy (paragraph 3) means
1) an extreme idea of isolating oneself from society.
2) a strong wish to have a family.
3) a desire to have as much publicity as possible.
4) a selfish and arrogant lifestyle.

76

5. The word muddle in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to

1) dirt and mud.
2) confusion.
3) disorientation.
4) wrong numbering of houses.
