Full story
U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson, acting after a conference call,
gave the Justice department and state governments until Monday morning to respond
to a company court filing this week that attacked the governments plan to break
Microsoft into two companies. The Redmond, Wash., company would have until
Wednesday morning to respond. In its filings, Microsoft suggested changes to the
government proposal. The company is seeking a ruling that would allow more time
before a possible breakup and would keep one of the two new companies away from
the watchful eye of the Justice department. Microsoft also submitted an additional
offer of proof Wednesday that said top executives from Compaq, Dream Works and
other companies were willing to testify against breaking up the software giant if the
judge would allow such testimony. Investors responded favorably to the filing,
pushing shares of Microsoft up $2.563 to $65.125 in morning trading on the
NASDAQ Stock Market. Just last week, Jackson refused to allow Microsoft
additional time to debate the remedy phase of the case. The company submitted its
offer of proof to say what it would have done if given time. Although such filings are
unlikely to sway Jackson, they might be important in Microsofts planned appeal of
his ruling that the software giant is a monopoly that violates antitrust laws. Jackson
ruled April 3 that Microsoft had engaged illegally in anti-competitive marketing
practices. As a penalty, the Justice Department and 17 states said Microsoft should be
split into two parts one that would develop and market the various Windows
operating systems, and the other that would take possession of Microsoft Office and
the companys various Internet properties.

Mr. Speaker, Mr. President Pro Tempore, members of Congress, and fellow
Americans, in the normal course of events, presidents come to this chamber to report
on the state of the union. Tonight, no such report is needed, it has already been
delivered by the American people. We have seen it in the courage of passengers who
rushed terrorists to save others on the ground. Passengers like an exceptional man
named Todd Beamer. And would you please help me welcome his wife Lisa Beamer
here tonight?

evening of the tragedy to see Republicans and Democrats joined together on

Speaker Hastert, Minority Leader Gephardt, Majority Leader Daschle, and
Senator Lott, I thank you for your friendship, for your leadership, and for your service

And I will carry this. It is the police shield of a man named George Howard
who died at the World Trade Center trying to save others. It was given to me by his
mom, Arlene, as a proud memorial to her son. It is my reminder of lives that ended
and a task that does not end.

And on behalf of the American people, I thank the world for its outpouring
of support. America will never forget the sounds of our national anthem playing at
Buckingham Palace, on the streets of Paris and at Berlins Brandenburg Gate. We
will not forget South Korean children gathering to pray outside our embassy in Seoul,
or the prayers of sympathy offered at a mosque in Cairo. We will not forget moments
of silence and days of mourning in Australia and Africa and Latin America. Nor will
we forget the citizens of 80 other nations who died with our own. <> Weve seen
the unfurling of flags, the lighting of candles, the giving of blood, the saying of
prayers in English, Hebrew and Arabic. <> America has no truer friend than Great
Britain. Once again, we are joined together in a great cause. Im so honored the
British prime minister has crossed an ocean to show his unity with America. Thank
you for coming, friend.

those who inflicted [the wound to our country]; traitors to their own faith,

ideologies of the 20th century.

The evidence we have gathered all points to a collection of loosely affiliated

terrorist organizations known as al Qaeda. They are some of the murderers indicted
for bombing American embassies in Tanzania and Kenya and responsible for
bombing USS Cole.

)
This group and its leader, a person named Osama bin Laden, are linked to
many other organizations in different countries, including the Egyptian Islamic Jihad,
the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.

)

, Al Qaeda is to terror what the Mafia is to crime. But its goal is not making
money, its goal is remaking the world and imposing its radical beliefs on people
everywhere.

) The terrorists practice a fringe form of Islamic extremism that has been
rejected by Muslim scholars and the vast majority of Muslim clerics; a fringe
movement that perverts the peaceful teachings of Islam.

)

The leadership of al Qaeda has great influence in Afghanistan and supports the
Taliban regime in controlling most of that country. In Afghanistan we see al
Qaedas vision for the world. Afghanistans people have been brutalized, many
are starving and many have fled. Women are not allowed to attend school. You
can be jailed for owning a television. Religion can be practiced only as their
leaders dictate. A man can be jailed in Afghanistan if his beard is not long
enough.17

I also want to speak tonight directly to Muslims throughout the world. We
respect your faith. It is practiced freely to many millions of Americans and by

A table rushed toward him and he

Somehow he managed to stand at an

everything, screaming back at the
screaming house. You want to fight,
come on! God damn it! She got enough
without you. She got enough!

: - A food chain refers to the process in nature by which
animals are fed by other animals and plants. All animals are ultimately
dependent on plants for food: some animals eat plants directly, while other
animals eat animals that eat plants. In this way, food chains develop. Look at
this diagram of a simple food chain ( ). It consists
of one producer ( ), one primary consumer (
), and one secondary consumer (
). In such a food chain (
) a producer is always a plant, and that plant (
) is eaten by a primary consumer, which is a plant-eating
animal ( ), called a herbivore.
The primary consumer is eaten by a secondary consumer (
), a meat-eating animal called a carnivore. An
example of a simple food chain would start with grass (
), which is eaten by a rabbit (
), which is then eaten by a fox (
26).

My full name is John Patrick Boynton Smith. Im seventeen (years
of age, years old).
John is my first name, Patrick Boynton is a middle name (Patrick is a
patronymic name, i.e. the name of my father, Boynton was the name of my
mothers grandfather). Smith is my last name (BrE = surname), which is my
family name. We are the Smiths my father, my mother, my sister and my
brother who are twins. My fathers name is Patrick Robert Smith Jr. Jr.
stands for junior, i.e. younger. American fathers often give their full names
to their sons, therefore they put Jr. in the end of the name so as not to mix up
fathers and sons. So you understand that my grandfathers name is Patrick
Robert Smith. He is still living, but my grandmother (my fathers mother)
died some years ago. My mothers parents live not far from our home. She is
their only child. My father has an elder brother (my uncle) who is married,
has a wife (my aunt) and two children (my cousins) a boy and a girl (my
fathers nephew and niece).

Society changes and so do families. In some places, people decide to live

together but do not get married. They are not husband and wife, but they call
each other their partner. There are families where a child or children live
with just their mother or father; these are called single-parent families. We
use prefix ex- for a husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend we had in the past
but do not have now (The children stay with my ex-husband at the weekend.)

Childhood and Adolescence
Sam was born in Scotland but when he was two, his father got a new job in
London and he grew up in the South of England. he finished one of London
schools and went to university at 18 where he

they had lots of rows (= arguments) and they split up (= broke up/separated).

Marriage
in his mid twenties he met Maureen. They fell in love at first sight and got
married within 6 months. A year later she got pregnant and they had their
first child, a boy. She is now expecting their second child (to be pregnant =
to be expecting a baby). But sadly Sam met another woman and he left
Maureen two months ago to live with the other woman (English Vocabulary

My brother and I live in a block of flats. I live on the ground floor, and my
brother lives on the third floor. Unfortunately theres no lift, so he has to
climb three flights of stairs to reach his flat. But he does have a balcony with
a wonderful view of the park opposite the flats. The rooms on the ground
floor are quite dark because they dont get very much sun. They are also
quite noisy because they are near the roads and the traffic. The other negative
thing is that the rooms are draughty (=cold air comes into the room through
the windows and under the doors because they dont fit very well). This
means it is expensive to heat the rooms (=to keep the rooms warm).
Fortunately I have a very good central heating system. In other ways, the flat
is very nice: it is in good condition and doesnt need to be repaired, and the
rooms are huge/enormous (=very big) (English Vocabulary in Use).

Daily Routines
1) Sleep
During the week I usually wake up at 6.30 a.m. I sometimes lie in bed for
five minutes but then I have to get up (=get out of bed and get dressed). Most
evenings, I go to bed at about 11.30 p.m. Im usually very tired, so I go to
sleep/fall asleep very quickly. Occasionally though, I cant get to sleep
(=succeed in sleeping). When that happens, I sometimes manage to fall
asleep about 3 a.m., then I oversleep (=sleep too long) in the morning. If I
have a late night (=go to bed very late; compare an early night), I try to
have a nap (=a short sleep, e.g. 20-25 minutes) in the afternoon. The
weekends are different. On Saturday and Sunday I have a lie-in (=stay in bed
until later, e.g. 9 a.m. or 10 a.m.)
2) Food
In the week I have breakfast at 7.30 a.m., lunch at 1 p.m., and dinner around
7 p.m. I also have one or two snacks, e.g. cakes, biscuits or fruit, during the
day at work. As I live alone/by my own/by myself (=without other people), I
also have to make my own breakfast and dinner, but during the week I dont
bother (=make an effort) to cook very much. I also have to feed my two cats
twice a day as well.
3) Keeping clean
In the summer I have a shower in the morning, but in the winter I often have
a bath instead. Sometimes I have a shave at the same time, or shave when I
have a wash and clean/brush my teeth after breakfast. I wash my hair two or
three times a week.
4) Work
In the morning I leave home about 8.15 a.m. and get to work by 9 a.m. I have
a lunch break from 1-2 p.m., and a couple of short breaks during the day (e.g.
coffee break). I leave work around 5.30 p.m. and get home about 6.15 a.m.
5) Evenings
During the week I usually stay in (=stay at home) and have a rest (=relax and
do nothing). But at the weekend I often go out (=leave the house for social
reasons, e.g. go to the movies or disco with friends), but quite often I also
have friends for dinner, or friends just come around (=visit me at the house)
for a chat, or we play cards, e.g. poker or bridge.
6) Housework (household chores)
I do the shopping on Saturday. Fortunately I have a cleaner (=a person who
cleans) and she does most of housework: she does my washing (=washes my
clothes), the washing-up (=washes the dishes), and does most of the ironing.

let this in, Mr. Lomax. Im also going to suggest that if you have any other exhibits,
you present them in a timely fashion, or not at all. Lomax: Im sorry, Barbara, I
was wrong. Its a huge hog beast. This is your handwriting, isnt it? Barbara:
Yes, but Lomax: You wrote this in Gettys class. Barbara: Its a joke.
Lomax: Hes a huge hog beast. He probably eats a thousand pancakes for
breakfast. Youre writing about Mr. Gettys, arent you? Barbara: It was meant to
be a joke. Lomax: Have you ever had a party at your house, Barbara, when your
parents were away? Prosecutor: Objection, Your Honor, were Lomax:
Credibility and bias. The Judge: Overruled. Answer the question. Barbara:
Yes. Lomax: Have you ever heard of a game called Special Places? Youre under
oath, Barbara. A mans career, his reputation, his life is on the line. This is not a joke.
Have you ever played Special Places? Barbara: Yes Lomax: Is this game
sexual in nature? Is this game sexual in nature?! Barbara: We only played it
once. Lomax: This special party, Barbara, this was the first time you told the story
about Mr. Gettys, wasnt it? Barbara: Yes Lomax: Ive spoken to other
children who were there that day. Can you say, is there anything else, Barbara, they
may have told me about the party? Prosecutor: Objection! If he has other
witnesses, let him call them! Lomax: If I need to call those other children, I will!
The Judge: Im going to sustain that, Mr. Lomax. Rephrase your question. Lomax:

301

You threatened those children, didnt you? Barbara: Thats not the way it
happened. Lomax: You told them to falsely claim Mr. Gettys had hurt them.
Barbara: These things did happen. Lomax: If they didnt, you were going to tell
everyone about this special party. Barbara: They happened to me. Lomax: So
you made up a story. A special story. A story about a math teacher who was tough on
you, who kept you after class. A huge hog beast you didnt like! Thats what really
happened, isnt it?! Barbara: No, I didnt want to be the only one. Barbaras
father: You goddamn, lowlife, son of a bitch Lomax: No further questions,
Your Honor.

Jo: I didnt rape her!

Detective Suza: You are a liar! You did
it, little stinky bastard! Why did you kill
her? Why did you make her mother
suffer?! Do you know what big guys in
Massachusetts State Penitentiary do
with assholes like you? Do you know
what theyll do with you when they
know why you were put there? Get a
good wine cork in your ass, boy, before
you sit in the jail bus!
Jo: I need a lawyer! Let me call a
lawyer!
Detective Suza: No fucking lawyers! No
fucking calls! (exit)
(enters John Dolton)
Detective Dolton: Hi, Jo. Hey, man,
you dont look good. I see, detective
Suza was, eh a little too persuasive.
Cmon, man, stop your eyewater, close
the faucet! Do you want some coffee?
Ill get you coffee, boy
Jo: I need a lawyer! Let me call a
lawyer!
Detective Dolton: Youll get your
lawyer, son. Dont worry, I promise - I
myself will call your lawyer. But you
dont need a lawyer.
Jo (astonished): Why?
Detective Dolton: Because you are
innocent. You didnt rape the girl. You
didnt kill her, I know that.
Jo: Then let me go! Please, let me go!
Detective Dolton: No, we cant do that,
poor boy.
Jo: But why!? Youve just said Im
innocent!

way. But the evidence says different. it

Jo: What evidence? Im not guilty.
Detective Dolton: you left this belt in
Janets apartment. Your Mum says it
belongs to your pants. Is this yours,
little boy?
Jo: yes, but
Detective Dolton: Yes what?
Jo: Nothing.
Detective Dolton: Then, tomorrow we
gonna file your case in court, son. You
dont have any evidence that prove your
innocence. So, think a little: you spend
your life time in jail, and your partner
will enjoy his bloody freedom.
Jo: My partner? I dont have any
partners.
Detective Dolton: No partners? Well,
yes.. You dont want to betray your
friend. Deserves appreciation really,
handsome of you. But he does betray
you now in the back office. He
describes how you were stiffing the
girls neck with your belt, and how
Jo: Mike? Mike Gibson? He says that?
He is lying! I gave him my belt to wear
for a while he liked the plate on it! I
didnt do it! I didnt!

MANCHESTER, N.H., November 22 Bill Bradley pounced on one of
Vice president Gores greatest vulnerabilities today, blaming politicians
inside the Beltway for money-driven political system that undermines the
very idea of democracy. With the soothing cadence of a psalmist, Bradley
used the scandals and investigations that accompanied the reelection of
President Clinton and the vice president as a symbol of all that is wrong with
329

Washington. He lamented that politics is broken. (Washington Post,

November, 24, 1999, by Mike Allen, Washington Post Staff Writer).

In the Commons on Thursday, the prime minister asserted that Labour
governments never have delivered growth. Not so, as Mr Kinnock swiftly
pointed out. Growth under the Labour governments 1964-70 was 2.8% a
year; in 1974-79 it was 2%. Since 1979, under the Tories, it has averaged a
mere 1.75%. Another own goal, Mr Major. (. Mascull, 1997, . 216).

I want Americans and all the world to know that coalition forces will make
every effort to spare innocent civilians from harm. <> Helping Iraqis achieve a
united, stable and free country will require our sustained commitment. <> We come
to Iraq with respect for its citizens, for their great civilization and for the religious
faiths they practice. We have no ambition in Iraq, except to remove a threat and
restore control of that country to its own people. Our nation enters this conflict
reluctantly

.
:
The coalition's efforts to preserve Iraq's future resources also continue on
a daily basis, <> our oil engineers and ordinance disposal teams are continuing to

make assessments in the Ramallah oil fields and the southern oil field region, <>
Seventh, to secure Iraq's oil fields and resources, which belong to the Iraqi people.
:
And last, to help the Iraqi people create conditions for a transition to a
representative self-government.

Our civil affairs teams continue their efforts to make great progress
wherever they do their work. For example, I reported that a children's school opened
in Umm Qasr recently. The next photo here shows another school, this one near An
Najaf, where civil affairs teams are orchestrating and assisting repairs, getting it
cleaned up to get it put back into use. This is a school. Also in An Najaf, the coalition
is providing fresh water and interfacing with the populace whenever they can.

On my orders, coalition forces have begun striking selected targets
of military importance to undermine Saddam Hussein's ability to wage war.
These are opening stages of what will be a broad and concerted campaign.

air bases, to help with intelligence and logistics, to the deployment of combat
units.

General Abizaid: War is a very, very

risky business for everybody. We are

We are confident about the ultimate

(Obododimma Oha):
Some Africans who watch Europeans eat may shake their heads,
wondering how anybody could live on uncooked food, and what is more, when such
food does not have any "weight". "How can an individual survive on these bits and
pieces?" was the question an African colleague asked me when both of us attended the
ASNEL conference in Germany recently and we had to go to the restaurant to eat
during a break. He wanted real "solid" food, something hard that he could swallow,
something that could hold a man's stomach for hours and prevent such a stomach from
grumbling and growling. Similarly, a seventy-year old Igbo lady, who traveled on the
same KLM flight with me to the US in June 1997, flatly refused to taste any of the
European dishes served on the plane; it was a problem getting anything that the old
woman could taste to provide some strength for the long hop from Lagos, through
Amsterdam to Los Angeles. She simply looked at what was brought and said, "Ihe a o
bu nri?" (Is this thing food). Similarly, we have the case of the young American, who,
in the film Indiana Jones, cannot recognize snakes, insects and frogs, offered to her by
her Asian hosts as food. Her shock at the strangeness of the other's food culture
reaches a climax when she is presented with a monkey's head for her to scoop out the
raw brain to eat as dessert: she simply deserts this kind of reality in a faint! (Oha,
2001, p.7)
