Unit Title: Surviving Civil War Content Area: Social Studies

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): 8.10 Students analyze the multiple causes, key events, and complex consequences of the Civil War. 4. Discuss Abraham Lincolns presidency and his significant writings and speeches and their relationship to the Declaration of Independence, such as his House Divided speech (1858), Gettysburg Address (1863), Emancipation Proclamation (1863), and inaugural addresses (1861 and 1865). 5. Study the views and lives of leaders (e.g., Ulysses S. Grant, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee) and soldiers on both sides of the war, including those of black soldiers and regiments. 6. Describe critical developments and events in the war, including the major battles, geographical advantages and obstacles, technological advances, and General Lee's surrender at Appomattox. 7. Explain how the war affected combatants, civilians, the physical environment, and future warfare. Big Ideas: Looking at how the Civil War was the indisputable test of the great American experiment and threatened to tear apart the Union the founding fathers had established. Abraham Lincoln said, "Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth" we will look at how he made this statement a reality and preserved the union through his speech and action as the American President during the Civil War. A variety of people fought to preserve the Constitution, we will examine groups such as the 54th Black Regiment and their struggle to preserve and fully realize the ideals of the Constitution. A variety of leaders fought to secure victory for both the Union and the Confederacy, we will examine who they were and their actions.

Unit Goals and Objectives: 1. Students will learn about the Presidency and policies of Abraham Lincoln. Students will analyze the speeches of Abraham Lincoln in a Web quest activity to understand their relationship to how the United States justified the Civil War. 2. Students learn about the people who shaped the Civil War. Students will learn about the major battles, and groups such as the 54th Black regiment in the Civil War and their impact through an interactive lecture and completion of guided notes. 3. Students will analyze the contributions of the major individuals such as Robert E. Lee, and their contributions to the Civil War. Students will complete a graphic organizer detailing the contributions of important leaders of the Civil War. 4. Students will learn how the Civil War affected various peoples and communities. Students will create a timeline detailing the major events of the Civil War. Unit Summary: This unit will focus on the People, events, and Battles that prevented the Union from fracturing during the Civil War. The unit we are beginning will look at the people and events that led the Nation through the Civil War. We will examine the speeches of Abraham Lincoln in contrast with the founding documents. We will also examine the leaders of both sides including the major participants such as Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. Along with the major leaders, we will be examining the major battles of the war and their outcomes. The unit will also look at the contributions of diverse groups such as the 54th regiment and their struggle to realize the ideals of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Next to the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, this is the defining point in our Nations history. For students to comprehend the American system of government they must understand the challenges that threatened its existence and the solutions that preserved it for future generations. Assessment Plan: Survey Quiz: Students will answer a short survey to assess their prior knowledge of the content.

Formative: Web quest: Students will complete a web quest examining the major speeches of Abraham Lincoln and their relationship to the founding documents.
