Over the next few weeks we will be working on a surrealist drawing that includes a hand interacting with a surrealist environment. Within your composition you must demonstrate the use of linear perspective. Be creative. Surreal art depicts unconscious thoughts and dreams. Surreal art can also have a hidden meaning or subtle message. Your job is to compose a surreal work of art that demonstrates your understanding of surrealism, your skill in observational drawing, and your understanding in linear perspective. Step 1: In order to prepare for this project, list 5 objects and 5 environments in the spaces below. Next, work with your classmates to brainstorm different ways these could interact with a hand. For example Boat, Kitchen, and Hand: A hand turning on the faucet creating waves under a pirate ship in a kitchen sink. Write three ideas in the space provided. Take your own pictures if you cannot find images online or in magazines. Step 4: Studio 1. Complete 3-4 rough drafts/preliminary sketches of your surrealist artwork. Change the compositions and perspective to make the artwork visually/ aesthetically appealing. These sketches should be gestural and not refined. 2. Create a in boarder around a piece of 12 x 12in drawing paper 3. Lightly lay out the elements of the artwork. Remember you must have an environment (foreground, background, & middle ground), at least one hand, and linear perspective. All should be realistically drawn and in a full range of values. Use references images for all objects within the drawing. Do not draw from memory. Step 3: Include your answers to the following questions in your artist statement. MLA Format. Points will be deducted for grammatical errors. Artist Statement should be no longer than one page. What did you create/draw? How did you create it? What inspired you? What materials did you use?
