100,000 HOMES CAMPAIGN TALKING POINTS FOR 60 MINUTES AND RELATED MEDIA
What is the 100,000 Homes Campaign? The 100,000 Homes Campaign is a national movement of communities working to end homelessness for 100,000 Americans. It is coordinated by a nonprofit called Community Solutions, but led by local organizations in each community. What results has the 100,000 Homes Campaign achieved? So far, communities participating in the Campaign have housed 82,000 of the sickest, longestterm homeless people in America. The Campaign estimates a potential savings of more than $1 billion to taxpayer-funded agencies from 100,000 people moving into housing. Campaign communities have housed more than 22,000 homeless Veterans so far.

What is housing first?

! ! Housing first is a highly effective approach to ending chronic homelessness that emphasizes providing homeless people with permanent housing right away and then offering other services as needed. In contrast to less effective models, housing first does not force homeless people to complete or comply with treatment, mental health care, employment training or other services in order to access and maintain permanent housing. Instead, it stabilizes people with housing, putting them in a better position to tackle other challenges.

Housing first is mainstream

! ! Housing first was instituted as federal policy under the George W. Bush Administration and has been expanded under the Obama Administration. More than 235 communities participating in Community Solutions 100,000 Homes Campaign have adopted housing first strategies to house more than 82,000 people collectively since July of 2010.

Housing first ends homelessness

! ! Virtually every major study has shown that housing first ends homelessness for the most vulnerable homeless people faster, more often and more permanently than traditional, treatment-based approaches. Roughly 85 percent of housing first tenants will never return to homelessness, making housing first the most effective solution to homelessness we have.

Housing first saves taxpayers money

! Permanent housing slashes taxpayer costs by keeping homeless people out of expensive services like shelters and emergency room. The cost of housing is far cheaper than these services.
