Purpose/ Background of the Activity

IET 120 Spring 2014

What does the group believe the purpose of this project is and whom it is to benefit? Why would it be necessary to include so many people to a group, at distance, to complete the activity? Clean consumable water is the essence of life. Over 3.4 million people die each year from water related diseases or lac of water in general. !o have clean useful water is a precious gift that is often ta en for granted. !o provide people with clean water is to save human lives, to aid humanity, and to further the e"istence of our race. With so many people without access to clean water, the magnitude of the operation it would ta e to give them water would be one of the greatest human accomplishments in the course of history. !his activity will hopefully show a very effective, cost efficient, easy#to# use way of providing those without clean water the ability to have it in no more than a few minutes. $ project li e this one would obviously benefit those without water but also stimulate economies and ma e jobs at the same time. Part One Customer %society& Who is the customer? What country' global society did you research? What is their need? !he largest groups of people that are without constant access to consumable water dwell in developing countries. !his does not mean that there is not water shortages right at home( it just affects more people in developing countries. )n *adagascar alone almost ++ million people are without access to clean water. ,our thousand children alone die a year from poor water sanitation in *adagascar. !hese astronomical figures are more than enough to draw attention to this large $frican )sland. !heir need is simple- water that can be used to sustain human life. !he problem- a sever lac of clean water and the inability to filter easily and effectively. .roduct /esign and ,unction 0"planation What product did the group decide to produce for the customer? /oes it follow the guidelines of being a sustainable material and an acceptable alternative energy source for the geographic area? 1ist data that proves it would be acceptable. 1oo ing at *adagascar one can thin about what is available to use. ,irst of all it is an island. What do all islands have an abundance of? Water. !hey are surrounded be salt water. )t of course, is not suitable to drin but it2s a start. $lso what generally comes with large amounts of salt water is large amounts of sand. !here are now two ey

materials in limitless 3uantities. $nother natural resource of *adagascar is graphite. 4and and graphite have both been used to filter water for many years and have been proven to remove contaminants. 5esearchers have recently discovered a process of coating regular sand with graphite to produce a stronger filtration method than either of the materials achieved on their own. !his composite is called 64uper 4and7. !he beauty of this idea is that it cost ne"t to nothing to ma e or to operate. )t also is an e"tremely simple process that does not re3uire e"pensive labs and factories. !a ing graphite o"ide and mi"ing it in water ma e the sand. !he sand is then applied to the mi"ture and the water vapori8ed off. )t2s as simple as that. 9ot e"tensive process or costly materials. !he graphite o"ide is a waste product of graphite mines, which are already in operation in *adagascar. $ll that lac s is mi"ing it with some sand. !he sand test out to be as good as most of the commercially sold carbon filters. !he only energy needed will be the process of harvesting the sand and transporting it and the graphite waste to the manufacturing location. $ small supply of water will be needed for the coating process( however it can be condensed after it is boiled off and reused again and again. !he fresh clean water can either be processed in the same plant the sand is made or could be done at home or in the villages with portable filtration units. !he widest part of the island is only 3:; miles wide, therefore a logical thought would be to plant a production plant inland to allow the inland dwellers access without much travel and let the shore lying villages ma e their own since they will have ready access to the ocean. !his would increase water transportation to the plant, but would not increase the cost that drastically and since most graphite mines are inland may be better all around. $s for the filtration units the materials can be ac3uired most anywhere. !he base for the filter tan can be made out of scrap wood or simply set the filter tan on top of a hill %must be higher than filtration chamber&. !he tan s can be made out of tubs or barrels or whatever happens to be available. $s long as they are arranged in a manner so the gravity can always pull the water down there is really no set way on how to set the filtration system up nor are there specific materials the must be used.

.roduct /rawings and .rototype )mages !he drawings, if done by hand and scanned, must neat with all measurements in order to build the product. !he prototype does not need to be functioning but must be a good model representation of the drawings.

*adagascar was chosen for several reasons. *any of *adagascar2s inhabitants live below the poverty line %appro"imately ??@& and most of these people die from unclean water. 9ot only is this location a great place that desperately needs help in this field, but it2s natural resources are perfect for the manufacturing processes of our solution. With the graphite mines already structured and producing one of the ey materials for our water purification method, then the job is already halfway completed with no e"tra energy consumption or e"pense. )t2s important to note that many other countries are currently attempting to solve this major water purification problem in *adagascar with a couple of projects currently underway. !his shouldn2t be a competition of capitali8ation but more of a joined effort to help with *adagascar2s poverty rates. 0veryone is trying to reach the same goal and it2s important to note that everyone could'should wor as a team. Other companies could even help with e"penses of getting started, so a presentation to other companies would be beneficial. #,ind a building location. %one that is on the mar et ready to move into or property& . !he =reen =iant .roject %located in 4outh Central *adagascar, +4A m 40 of the city !oliara& comprises several owned claims and additional claims through a ?A@ ownership interest joint venture partnership with *alagasy *inerals. !his main project is responsible for the major graphite mines in southern *adagascar and a joint venture partnership is necessary for the water purification goal. $ joint venture partnership could allow easy access to e3uipment, buildings, and most importantly the graphite needed for this project2s proposed solution. !hey have over +;A:.? mB: of property owned that could be shared along with the major roadways. !he main site for the water purification plant is near $ndanovory. !his area is perfect because it2s close to the graphite mines, close enough to the ocean for water and sand retrieval with a great transportation route, and is an area close to towns that desperately need water purification. $s far as finding a location to build a water purification plant here, communication with *adagascar2s real estate agency would be re3uired. !his being a lower income area as well as a project this si8e re3uires 3uite a large area for construction, governmental contact should be re3uired.

!his project should start in steps, the first being stationed in 4outhern *adagascar in the !oliara region. !he main reason for this is the strategic location of the roads, water and sand sources to the oceans and the location of the graphite mines. ,or the roads, the >ighway ? is perfect. !his part of the highway is only C;.? m %appro"imately 4? min& of driving time from the ocean near !oliara to the graphite mining areas near $ndanovory where the water purification facility will be located. )f needed there2s another road, >ighway +; that leads down to 4outhern *adagascar near $venue du *arechal ,och that2s A:4 m long. !his trip is 3uite e"tensively longer, so would be necessary maybe when another water purification facility is placed closer to the southern edge of *adagascar. #What other infrastructures are available? )f the effort to collaborate with other companies doesn2t wor , there are other options. =raphite mines aren2t e"tensive or costly, so planning our own graphite mining operations could be a solution. $nother solution could just be common trade with the graphite mines, and setting manufacturing areas somewhere else. !he distance would be farther away, but as long as graphite can be obtained for the graphite#o"idi8ed sand then there shouldn2t be a problem. #$ny other information that may be importantD. )t2s important to note that *adagascar2s economy is driven by it2s e"tractive industries, tourism, and agricultural sectors. 5ecently growth rates have had a negative effect, declining by about 3.?@ as a result to financial crisis. *ore importantly, the economy has been recovering slowly but with living conditions worsening, the country is in severe need of help. $lso that not even A years ago the government was overthrown, and it2s continuing instability and postponements of elections have led to deterioration in the economic climate.
