The book is an interdisciplinary work that combines approximately 60 color photographs with an introductory text, quotes by recognized artists (writers, poets, architects, painter and musicians), words from indigenous languages, and 4 poems. The photographs are of Argentine cemeteries, 14 in all scattered among nine provinces. The central idea of the book is an encounter with a reflection of the essence of Life and human history within the realm of these cemeteries.
The presentation of the photos is handled with delicacy: it is not somber. The encounter with Life is not immediate, but occurs instead in stages. It begins with a conventional study of urban and architectural design, and slowly deepens, in a process of layers that are peeled away – as one layer of interest is discarded, it reveals another below, deeper inside. The layers of interest define the chapters of the book. The progression of pages and photos begins to reveal valuable facets of this “other” city. The structure of the book is as follows:
I. Introduction: On the other side of the sky.
II. The photographs: The other city.
A. City (the urban)
B. House (the architectural)
C. Door (the iconic within the architectural)
D. Cross (the symbolic)
E. Heart (the symbolic)
F. Flower and wreath (the symbolic)
G. Wing (the symbolic)
H. Peace and silence (the symbolic)
I. Story (the narrative and historic)
J. Empty Niche (the story to come)
III. The poems – 4, one page each
A phantom trail: the trail left by a tear
Gorazarre (Homage): paying tribute to one’s ancestors
Memories: fading memories
Collision: an encounter with destiny
The book is bilingual: all of the texts are in English and Spanish. Each chapter begins with a title page and a quote that illuminates the idea behind the title. This is followed by the photos: each photograph is presented alone on a page, accompanied on the facing page by a brief description and one or two indigenous words. The inclusion of these words is explained in the introduction. There are six to ten photos per chapter – the strength of the idea behind each chapter lies in this repetition; the whole of the photographic series, complimented by the quotes, notes, and indigenous words, expresses the chapter’s theme.
