battles and wars on the development of our nation through Reconstruction. Language Arts RI. 7 Draw
on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a
question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently. RI.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and
domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area. W.3 Write
narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive
details, and clear event sequences. W.3.b. Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, description, and
pacing, to develop experiences and events or show the responses of characters to situations.
Lesson Objective: The students will understand the cultural differences between the North and South,
economics, and other causes and results of the Civil War and the impact of Reconstruction.
Assessment strategy: Student learning will be assessed through informal observation during the lecture,
the completion of the graphic organizers, and at the end of the unit, the students will complete a writing
project either a Civil War soldiers diary entry or a continuation of the story Pink and Say.
