Experiment 6.142 BENZOIN In a 500-ml round-bottomed flask place 65 ml of rectified spirit, 50 g (47.5 ml 0.

47 mol) of pure benzaldehyde (1) and a solucin of 5g of sodium cyanide (96-98%) (CAUTION : see Expt 5.157, Note (1) in 50 ml of water. Attach a reflux condenser (preferably of the doble surface type) and boil the mixture gently for half an hour(2). Cool the contets of the flask (preferably in an ice bath). Filter the crude benzoin, wash it with cold water, drain well (3) and dry. The yield of crude benzoin, which is white or pale yellow in colour, is 45g (90%). Recrystallise 5.0g from about 40ml of hot rectified ( or industrial) spirit upon cooling, 4.5g of pure benzoin (a white, crystalline solid, m.p. 137 C) separates. Reserve the remainder of the preparation for benzil and benzilic acid (Expts 6.143 and 6.144 respectively). Notes. (1) For the purification benzaldehyde, see Expt 6.133. of commercial

Adjuntar un condensador de reflujo ( preferentemente del tipo de superficie doble ) y hervir la mezcla suavemente durante media hora ( 2 ) . Enfriar los contets del matraz ( preferiblemente en un bao de hielo ) . Filtrar la benzoina crudo, lvela con agua fra, escurrir bien ( 3 ) y seco. El rendimiento de benzoina crudo, que es de color blanco o de color amarillo plido , es 45 g ( 90 % ) . Se recristaliz 5,0 g de alrededor de 40 ml de alcohol rectificado caliente ( o industrial ) al enfriarse , 4,5 g de benzona puro ( un slido cristalino blanco , pf 137 C ) separa . METHYL SALICYLATE

Salicilato de Metilo

Use 28g (0.2 mol) of salicylic acid, 64g ( 81 ml, 2 mol) of dry methanol and 8 ml of concentrated sulphuric acid. Reflux the mixture for at least 5 hours and work up as for methyl benzoate. Collect the pure methyl salicylate ( a colourless oil of delightful fragrance, oil of wintergreen) at 221-224 C; the yield is 25g ( 81%). The ester may also be distilled under reduced pressure; the b.p. is 115 C /20 mmHg and a 2 C fraction should be collected.
