The Myth of Multitasking, Christine Rosens views about Multitasking.

According the article The Myth of Multitasking by the author, Christine Rosen, Multitasking is the act of doing multiple hard tasks at once, usually with technologies. Multitasking is not recommended at all. The article shows pro views of multitasking and con views. However it talks about the cons more; which basically says that multitasking is a myth that we cant really do it, inhuman, and its bad for us health wise and time wise. We as humans can only actually focus on one thing at a time. Its a sign of intelligence and multitasking is for the non-serious that Lord Chesterfield believed, which is a man from the 1740s. The author talks about multitasking and explains the pros and cons of it but focuses more on the cons. The cons of the article starts with the fact how intense multitasking has become with the speed youre supplying and the gadgets of distracts not making you fully focused on a subject makes you not retain properly or remember any information that was given to you at that time while multitasking. (P.105) You tend to be distracted while multitasking according to several studies stated in the article and that affects your overall performance. Also, the BBC reported a study lead my Hewlett-Packard and accompanied by the University of London, the Psychiatry department that found multitasking was not

To say that multitasking negatively affects retention and retrieval of information is not the same as saying you cant remember anything. benefiting the work place at all, causing a flow of distractions that effect there productivity. (P.106) Dr. Edward Hallowell believes that multitasking is a myth it doesnt excise. In the paragraph he says its basically impossible for a normal human to truly multitask. Hallowell believes that we should limit multitasking and realize the great virtue of single tasking. (p.106) Multitasking is extremely bad for the economy. Its costing the US economy about $650 billion a year in lost productivity because multitasking causes disturbances like emailing and calling while working. (P. 106) Multitasking also effects your brain and changes it a negative way neurologist and psychologist Jordan Grafman in 1999, have conducted research that shows that the flow blood increase to a region of the frontal cortex called Brodmann area 10 found with the help of the fMRI that scans people who multitask or task switch. Grafman told the New York Times in 2001 its what makes us most human. (p. 107) Rene Marios of Vanderbilt University used an fMRI to see how the brain reacts to multiple stimuli at once. It shows that the brain wasted time because it cant figure out which task to start and there are gaps between the switching of the tasks that wasted even more time. David Meyer at the University of Michigan thinks that with adaption it can be useful but it can cause long-term health affects like short-term memory loss because multitasking makes your brain release stress hormones and adrenaline. (P.107) Russell Poldrack, a psychology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that multitasking makes it hard to learn new information. It affects the striatum and hippocampus in the brain. Poldrack states that we are not supposed to be multitasking that we force ourselves, kind of, to multitask that leads to being less efficient. (P.107108) Poldrack said, multitasking changes the way people learn. Media multitasking is

rising; from 1999 to 2005 the multitasking of media has increase by 10 percent, which basically means that its be an epidemic. (P.108) Psychologist, Jane Healy, said that these generations of kids are pigs, because shes afraid that they will grow up to be quick and shallow thinkers. (P.108) Pay Attention is of up most importance also focus. Patience is also a blessing. Isaac Newton once answered if he had found any breakthroughs it was owing more to patient attention than to any other talent. (P.108-109) Pay attention gets difficult with multitasking. (p.109-110) Interstices of their mind-wandering, with scraps of attention rationed out amongst many competing tasks, their culture might profit in knowledge, but it will confidently deteriorate in wisdom. (P.110) The article talks about the pros of multitasking as well, as for example Neurologist Jordan Grafman believes that kids that multitask with homework, TV, Games, and texting will do fine in the future. (P.108) The other pro of multitasking is that your not wasting time that your always fast doing other tasks or task switching, which is in theory quicker and more convenient. Multitasking could be adapted and is a useful and powerful skill to use and have. (P.107-108) All in all, multitasking is not recommended, but focusing on one thing is recommended. It explains the cons and the pros of multitasking however the author, Christine Rosen, concentrates on the cons or provides more cons. Multitasking affects the paying attention process usually in a negative or non-positive way. Multitasking is bad for your brain it raises its blood flow and pressure.

Please read the examples again, and start with a new outline that focuses on analysis. See me if you are unsure how to do this.
