Teacher Candidate: Acacia Garcia Subject/Grade: Shared Reading/Kindergarten Lesson # 3 Date and Time of Lesson: 03/11/2014

Learning Objective: Students will be able to identify the new sight word in the text. Alignment with Standards: RI.K.10 Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding. RF.K.1a Follow words from left to right, top to bottom, and page by page. RF.K.3c Read common high-frequency words by sight (e.g., the, of, to, you, she, my, is, are, do, does). Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: Students will have prior knowledge of how we go through big books and read them. They will also have prior knowledge of sight words we have gone over in class. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Use of Formative Assessment (TWS section 7) This assessment will be used to further their knowledge of highfrequency sight words. Students learn new sight words throughout the week and spell and shout them to help them retain the new information.

Students will be able to identify the new sight word, his, in the big book.

Students will come up to the big book and cover the sight word, his, with highlighter tape to identify where it is in the story. Teacher observation will take place using a checklist.

Accommodations: Students will participate with the class as a whole. Challenging questions will be asked for those that find the work unchallenging. Rewording the question(s) will be used if a student does not understand the new content. Materials: Big BookThe Monster Pet Highlighter tape Procedures: 1. Students will come to the carpet and sit quietly on their spots. 2. The teacher will display the big book The Monster Pet. 3. She will begin reading the big book, pointing at the words as the students read along. 4. The teacher will then introduce the sight word his using the SmartBoard to display it on the board. a. The word will be spelled, cheered, and used in a sentence. 5. The teacher and the students will then go back through the big book and find the new sight word. a. The new sight word will be highlighted with highlighter tape by the students. b. Students will be picked by pulling sticks from a cup. c. When students are having an easy time the teacher will ask challenging questions such as i. Has looks similar to His. What is the difference? ii. How do we know that this is the word His?
