Alissa Zalewski EDR 321 Winter 2014 Surface Area of Spheres Part Two Tentative date: May 19th

I. Benchmark/Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.CO.D.12 Make formal geometric constructions with a variety of tools and methods (compass and straightedge, string, reflective devices, paper folding, dynamic geometric software, etc.). CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.GMD.A.3 Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres to solve problems. Behavioral/Objective: The learner will do a hands-on activity to derive the formula for the surface area of a sphere. The learner will understand where each component of the formula is derived from and how to apply the formula. Anticipatory Set: Review handball activity of the day prior. Objective/Purpose: Today we will do another fun activity to derive the formula for the surface area of a sphere! By the end of the hour, you should understand each component of the formula and how to apply it. Input: a. Task Analysis: i. Review handball activity of the day prior. ii. Students will discover the formula for surface area of a sphere with Oranges Activity. Each group will get one orange. 1. Teacher will walk through worksheet and clarify any questions. 2. Teacher will model how to set up the activity. iii. With 15-20 minutes left of class, go over the activity and have a class discussion. iv. With 5 minutes left of class, Exit pass: What is the formula for surface area of a sphere and why does the formula work? v. Homework: Students must find a sphere at home, measure it, and find its surface area. b. Learning Styles and/or Accommodations: i. Remediation: The lesson will incorporate the following learning styles: audio, visual, and kinesthetic. ii. Interpersonal: Students will work on assigned worksheet with other students if they choose. c. Method and Materials:

i. Ways of presenting: Hands-on activities, discussion, demonstration, and group work and collaboration. ii. Materials needed: Worksheet, one orange per group, paper, napkins, Elmo, calculator, centimeter rulers, exit passes. VI. Modeling: a. The teacher can model how to set up the activity. Check for Understanding: a. Warm-up. b. Oranges activity. c. Circulating room while students are working. d. Exit passes. e. Homework. Independent Practice: Students will complete the following activity for homework: a. Find a sphere at home. This could be a basketball, globe, beach ball, etc. Use what you know about surface are to measure the object and it's find the surface area. Closure: With 5 minutes left of class, students will receive an exit pass. Students must fill out their answer on Socrative. a. What is the formula for surface area of a sphere and why does the formula work?
