Lesson # 4 Date and Time of Lesson: 3/19 1:30 pm

Learning Objective: Students will be able to compare and contrast the overall structure of information from scientific articles/internet resources about alligators and crocodiles. Alignment with Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.5 Compare and contrast the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in two or more texts. EEDA Standard: SSCA Element: Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: This lesson has a crosscurricular connection to science and classifying animals. This lesson is developmentally appropriate because the text the students are reading is on a fifth grade reading level. They have also worked on comparing and contrasting with in historical fiction texts. This will be the first time that we are using this skill to compare and contrast information from a scientific text. I chose this text because all of my students showed interest in animals through their interest inventory. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Pre-Assessment Alligator vs. Croc Picture Pre-test: Students will be given a short pre-test with 5 pictures of either a crocodile or an alligator. Students will be asked to label each picture as alligator or crocodile. During Assessment Discussion on Crocs Vs Gators: Students will be given a participation grade based on their discussion with their partner. They will be assessed based on how well they stay on topic and the quality of their discussion. Post Assessment Todays Meet Discussion: Students will respond to a post on an education chat room called Todays meet. Students will be given a daily grade based on their participation, the quality of their answers, and their spelling/grammar. Alligator vs. Croc picture Post-test: Students will be given the picture quiz again to see how much knowledge they

have gained from these articles.

Accommodations: Students will be paired up with a partner that I believe is on their same level for discussion. Their partner will also be someone who they are able to stay on topic with and will not cause disruptions. Every student will be given a copy of each of the articles. I will also read each article aloud to help ELL students and any student who is not reading on grade level. This will also benefit auditory learners.

Materials: 26 copies of Can You Tell a Gator From a Croc?, Powerpoint of Alligator pictures, 26 copies of alligator article, 26 copies of crocodile article, Chromebooks, ELA notebooks, pencils Procedures:

Technology: Students will be using the Chromepads to have a chat discussion. This will cut down on some of the noise within the classroom because the students have a hard time completing partner work at a low noise level. This will also help keep the students interests and help with their keyboarding and grammar skills. References: Super Teacher Worksheets,
