cycles and stages of life through

butterflies
Students will View insects in the entomology museum or through

virtual images Read Eric Carles book The Hungry Caterpillar and look at images in tissue paper Create issue paper drawings of the four life cycle stages of butterflies Assemble their drawing into a cycle wheel

What

cycles and changes do we see in living creatures? How are the stages of the butterfly life cycle alike and different from our life cycles as humans?

Students

will explore the different life cycles and stages of insects. Students will be able to understand similarities and differences in the stages of life of butterflies and their own life. Students will be able to explain and draw the different stages in the butterfly life cycle. Students will create a tissue paper drawing of the stages of the butterfly life cycle and construct a cycle wheel.

Students

will be instructed to take special notice of different stages of growth of the insects in the entomology museum or virtual tours Questions to be answered:
How are the insects different from each other? Do you think these insects always looked this

way? If not what did they look like before? How do you see the same insect change? Were do you think these insects lived?

While

back in the classroom, the class will have a short discussion of what they saw at the museum or on the virtual tour We will then look at the work of Eric Carle and read his book The Hungry Caterpillar A demo will be given on how to create a tissue paper drawing/ painting and how to make it into a cycle wheel. Students will receive their materials and create their wheels.

Assessment will be primarily formative. There will be class discussion and I will be circulating the room to check on students work. I will also have a quick check of what the students know as they get in line before they leave.
