Students from Puerto Rico Take Top Honors in the 2009 Global ThinkQuest Competition

Students from Puerto Rico took top honors in the 2009 ThinkQuest Competition. The ThinkQuest Competition, sponsored by the Oracle Education Foundation (OEF), includes the following: o o A Website Competition that challenges student teams to develop educational websites on topics of their choosing. A Narrative Competition that challenges student teams to publish their ideas on topics of global importance using OEFs ThinkQuest Projects platform.

Participating students develop critical 21 century skills, including teamwork, technology, and communication skills. Qualifying entries are published in the ThinkQuest Library, the worlds largest online repository of student-developed learning projects. Prizes for winning teams include laptop computers, digital cameras, school grants, and a trip to the awards event in the San Francisco Bay Area, depending on placement.

Narrative Winners
Local students Nazhira Borrero, Ramn Mercado, Leslyanne Rivera, Lyanne Rivera and Jos Santos of Dr. Mximo Donoso Snchez School created an entry called Planet Keepers: st Protecting Our World United as One, which was awarded 1 place in the 19 and under age division. The entry addressed creating awareness on how much people mistreat the

planet and find simple things people can do in order to solve this global problem.
Winning teams were selected from among 1,200 teams from 26 countries. Countries represented by winners include Brazil, India, Puerto Rico, Singapore, South Africa, and the United States. Teams had approximately four months to research their topics and publish their entries using OEFs ThinkQuest Projects platform. An international panel of volunteer judges reviewed the st nd entries and selected 1 and 2 Place winners within three age divisions.
