Unit Title: Express Yourself! Content Area: Math Algebra I

Name: Debbie Phillips Grade Level: 9

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): A.CED.1: Create equations and inequalities in one variable including ones with absolute value and use them to solve problems. A.CED.2: Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities. A.CED.3: Represent constraints by equations or inequalities, and by systems of equations and/or inequalities, and interpret solutions as viable or non-viable options in a modeling context. A.REI.1: Explain each step in solving a simple equation as following from the equality of numbers asserted at the previous step, starting from the assumption that the original equation has a solution. Construct a viable argument to justify a solution method. A.REI.3: Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters. Big Ideas: identify essential content, concepts and skills to frame and guide the unit - Recognize mathematical concepts in everyday activities and situations - Translate these concepts into mathematical equations or inequalities - Solve equations or inequalities requiring both single and multiple step operations - Interpret the results of the calculations and use the information to make decisions

Unit Goals and Objectives: 1. Students will learn to recognize when math is required in everyday activities 2. Students will learn how to translate their words, objects and experiences into expressions, equations, and inequalities 3. Students will solve the equations and inequalities and use the results to aid decision making 4. Students will briefly explore some of the roots and history of algebra 5. Students will understand how to balance equations when solving 6. Students will understand concepts of slope and intercept when graphing solutions and impact of altering either value

Unit Summary: 5 sentence minimum; provide overall description of unit content and activities This unit is designed to help the student realize that math plays a crucial role in their lives every single day. Well investigate a variety of events in our lives that we can apply math to. Were going to focus on using math to help us make our daily decisions, many dealing with our finances. Well spend some time learning how to translate English words into mathematical symbols. Well learn to set up equations and a couple of techniques to solve them so that we can use the information to make our decisions. We will learn about graphing linear equations, what the slope and intercept are, and what happens when we change them.

Unit Resources: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwCLitK69PU good video. Maybe add to website and/or use as unit intro. http://www.geogebratube.org/ I might put some graphing activities in just so I can use some of the games here like Destroy and Three Rounds http://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/introduction-to-algebra/overview_hist_alg/v/the-beauty-of-algebra This is a good video because it starts with a simple math problem and increases the level of abstractedness. http://www.purplemath.com/modules/why_math.htm why study algebra http://www.mangahigh.com/en-us/math_games/algebra good practice games; those under forming algebra include words to math http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=11939 a good overview of math in everyday life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vO7WmhjY20 impressive overview of algebra sung to cup song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CQ89dKNTvA another good one, solve me maybe http://klicka.cedarbluffes.knoxschools.org/modules/podcast/files/443879/Expressions.m4a?sessionid=9cf5f203e28bb9716ea451cdf6dea0c1 not as good; audio only Useful Websites: http://voices.yahoo.com/real-life-examples-linear-equations-2659303.html (probably only use cell phone plan example but even thats almost moot). https://www.sophia.org/application-of-linear-equations-pathway lots of good examples with a tutorial and 1 quiz question. Most examples could be expanded. http://classroom.synonym.com/real-life-functions-linear-equations-2608.html some good examples. I also like that this site touches on limits of linearity. http://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/introduction-to-algebra/writing-expressions-tutorial/v/writing-expressions-1 Sals take on writing expressions
