The lesson I chose to teach for my showcase lesson focuses on sound.

This lesson includes a pre-assessment, during assessment, and post-assessment. These assessments will be used to evaluate the students learning of the objective. The objective of this lesson is: Third grade students will recognize the various pitches created by vibrations. The students will also explain and recall how vibrations produce sound and can be transferred from one material to another. All activities in this lesson will be based on the idea that vibrations of objects affect the pitch, produce sound, and can be transferred from one medium to another. The purpose of the pre-assessment is to gain an understanding of the students prior knowledge. They have not learned about vibrations before, so their knowledge will come from outside of school. The purpose of the during assessment is to show me how well the students are grasping the concept of vibrations causing sounds and various pitches. The during assessment will also help to show that the students are on task and focusing. I plan to have a post-assessment that is identical to the pre-assessment so the students can demonstrate what they have learned in the lesson. They will be allowed to share their pictures with the class if they choose to draw one. As stated above, I plan to have an identical pre-assessment and post-assessment. I will ask the students to have a piece of paper in front of them. The front side of the paper will be the preassessment and the backside will be the post-assessment. For both assessments, I will ask the students to answer the following questions: 1) What does the word vibration mean? 2) How are different sounds made? After the pre-assessment, I will play the following video for the students: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOnwW6TTTT4. Before I give the pre-assessment, I will make sure the students understand that it is okay if they do not know the correct answers. I will stress that it is important to write what they think may be correct so they can compare their answers after completing the post-assessment. The pre-assessments and post-assessments will be given a score of 0, 1, or 2. A score of two means that the student answered both questions correctly. A score of one means the student answered one question correctly. A score of zero means the student did not answer either of the questions correctly. The pre-assessment will not matter as much as the post-assessment and I will stress that again to the students. The during assessment will consist of the students talking with partners and working together to figure out how various vibrations with change pitch and sound. I will walk around and monitor the students as they work and converse amongst themselves. I will get the students back on task if they get distracted or are having conversations about things other than the activity. I will also make sure the students are grasping the concept so there are not any misconceptions, if possible. While the students are working, I will demonstrate my shoe box with rubber bands to show how the rubber bands vibrate to make a sound. Some students require accommodations in this classroom and I will need to take these into account as I am teaching this lesson. I will allow the student who needs to sit up front with extra

attention to sit at the table with me. I will also allow the student who needs to be isolated to move closer to other students as they work with partners. I will also repeat as needed and give extra attention where it is needed. Assessment Plan Table: Lesson Objective(s) Third grade students will recognize the various pitches created by vibrations. The students will also explain and recall how vibrations produce sound and can be transferred from one material to another. Assessments Pre-Assessment Format of Formative Assessments Pre: I will give a twoquestion quiz to the students to see what they know about the topic. The questions will include what is a vibration and how are different sounds made. During: Teacher observation. Monitoring to make sure the students are on task. Make sure the students are grasping the concept. Post: The two question quiz will be given again. This will be identical to the preassessment. The students will compare their answers to the pre-assessment. Accommodations I will allow the student who needs to sit up front with extra attention to sit at the table with me. I will also allow the student who needs to be isolated to move closer to other students as they work with partners. I will also repeat as needed and give extra attention where it is needed.
