Gallery Owner Sentenced to Prison

NEW YORK.- New York gallery owner Frederick Schultz was sentenced to 33 months in prison and fined $50,000 for participating in a conspiracy to sell stolen antiquities from Egypt. Schultz was a former president of National Association of Dealers in Ancient, Oriental and Primitive Art. He will be allowed to remain free pending his appeal, reported The New York Times. Judge Jed S. Rakoff of Federal District Court in Manhattan rejected the defenses arguments. The judge called Schultz "an ordinary thief in every conventional sense of that word." The judge ordered Schultz to return the Egyptian government an Old Kingdom bas relief.
