PREFACE

The present glossary of peacekeeping terminology is an extension of the

Defence Reform Terminological Database (DRTD) of 2004-5. It is the result of
continuing cooperation between the NATO Russian Language Section (RLS)
and the RF Military University in Moscow, under the aegis of the NRC Ad Hoc
Working Group on Defence Reform, with the support of the RF Ministry of
Defence and General Staff.
It contains approximately one thousand terms, selected from NRC working
documents and other authoritative sources in the field. In each case the
relevant NATO or Russia attribution is indicated in the right-hand margin.
Appropriate annotations have been included as in the first Defence Reform
Database.
As with the previous work, this peacekeeping glossary is intended to be of
practical use to diplomats, armed forces personnel and linguists, and is
conceived as a living document to be maintained and developed over time.
The
DRTD
of
2004-5
is
now
available
on
the
Internet
(http://www.nato.int/russia). The peacekeeping glossary will eventually be
available on the same site.
The Editorial Board wishes to thank Mr. J. Colston, DPP Assistant Secretary
General and Chairman of the NRC Ad Hoc Working Group on Defence Reform
and Vice-Admiral V.S. Kuznetsov, RF Senior Military Representative to NATO
for their encouragement and support, as well as Mr. Erik Sandahl, NATO
Operations Section, Operations Directorate, for his specialist contribution.
