1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related to the area of focus did the teacher include in the lesson today? Today, while working with a small group of 3, the comprehension skill was analyzing the character. After reading the three reading passages provided by the skill packs on Reading A-Z, I asked each of the students to point out a describing word about the characters. After asking about the characters, I asked each of the students similar questions that were in the book: do you play baseball? do you like to play with butterflies? After we finished the three passages, we moved on to play popcorn sight words, read another example book (Duck and a Book), and worked on some 2nd grade sight words. 2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn? Having each student read a sentence at a time really worked well with keeping my small group on task. Playing the popcorn game created a little friendly competition which was really fun to see the students work that much harder to try and win the game. The three students in my small group did really well with catching on how to analyze a character. They were very quick to point out different adjectives in the passages, as well as answering adjectives about themselves. 3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or confirmed something from today dealing with student achievement in the area of reading. (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, before/during/after reading.) The students really grasped the idea of comprehension, being that they had to formulate and analyze the characters in the passages that we read. This is the second week that I have used the popcorn sigh word game, and I can really tell their fluency is improving to a quicker pace. This is definitely a tool I will utilize on a weekly basis. The students love it and it makes the fluency learning that much more adaptable. 4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it! kind of moment. How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience? Explain the situation. There was really a got it moment when a student sounded out the word picture and got it correct. This particular little girl is a struggling reader so whenever she achieved the word and said it correctly both her and I shared a big smile! I offered her tons of verbal praise and I could tell that she was very proud of herself.
