Inquiry Proposal: Does social media have negative effects on college students? Thesis: Social media has negative effects on college students mentally and emotionally.
Comment [AP1]: Can you be more specific?

Blomfield, Corey. "Social Networking Cite." Wiley Online Library. Australian Journal of Psychology, Mar. 2014. Web. This journal talked a lot about the amount of time that adolecentsadolescents spend on social networking sites and how it links to different forms of social and unhealthy issues. Some of these issues include depression, lowered self esteemselfesteem and gender confusion. I feel like this can really help my paper when it comes to showing the negative aspects of using social media. I would use the part where Blomfield says Depressed mood was significantly higher for adolescents who had an SNS profile compared with adolescents who did not have an SNS profile. The main effect of gender was significant for depressed mood, with females having higher levels of depressed mood than males because it can show negative effects of social networking sites. The things that Blomfield researches can really benefit my paper with negative and postitivepositive impacts of social media. I would use this source in my paper because it was a journal and I found it on the schools library website. With this journal it can really support my beliefs that social networking has negative affects on college students.
Comment [AP3]: This is an unexpected issue associated with social networks. Interesting. Comment [AP2]: Are there volume and issue numbers? Is this an online journal? If so where is the url? I need more citation information here.

Chinsch, Christian. "Http://uncc.worldcat.org/title/the-impact-of-frequent-social-internetconsumption-increased-procrastination-and-lower-lifesatisfaction/oclc/5185299533&referer=brief_results." The Impact of Frequent Social Internet Consumption. Wiley Online Libabry, Mar. 2014. Web. The article discusses the importance of face to faceface-to-face interaction instead of interaction through internet based sites. The author goes into specifics about how often people generally use the internet to the harm that we often face by being so plugged into online interaction. Chinsch says Individuals with little in common aside from an Internet connection now have access to an interaction medium that can neutralize tremendous cultural or geographic differences. When he states this he is saying that its helping people to branch out and communicate in various ways. This can be good and bad because people often forget what face to face interaction is like and often become very awkward when put in situations that are no longer comfortable. Other areas that the article covers is are negative affects of using the internet which directly links back to my thesis. The article states that We also hypothesized that social Internet use would negatively impact individual's perceptions of life satisfaction. A number of studies have established a negative relationship between levels of procrastination and life satisfaction. This is another article I pulled off of the library website and will really benefit my paper in many ways.
Comment [AP6]: What does this mean. This might be one of those terms youll need to define. Comment [AP5]: How do you figure? Do you have research to back this up? Comment [AP4]: This citation is also incorrect. Consult the writing reference book assigned to this class.

Junco, R. "The Effect of Twitter on College Student Engagement and Grades." Ferris.edu. N.p., n.d. Web. Mar. 2014. By using Twitter, a popular social networking site, researchers saw that it had

very little positive impact on the learning and education of college aged students. The article goes on to explain the research that was conducted to prove that social media really does affect the academic learning of students. Social networking websites, such as Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter, have become an integral part of U.S. students lives. This can be a positive thing if students used social media correctly, it could have benficial affects, but it tends to take on a more negative aspect when used. Students use social media as a way of communication but it can also be used to unwind from a stressful day or used between breaks to relax. This study shows how and why students are affected the way they are and then it goes on to show how there can be improvement in the way that students learn and interact on social media. I can use this in my paper to reflect on alternative ways to use social media to help it have positive rather than negative impacts.
Comment [AP7]: Okay, can you give some specifics?

Singer, Natasha. "They Loved Your G.P.A. Then They Saw Your Tweets." New York Times. Bowdoin College, n.d. Web. Mar. 2014. High School seniors never knew that they were being tracked by colleges. When colleges saw the things that the seniors were posting on social media they denied their acceptance to the colleges. Most often we dont realize that the things we put on Social media really comes back to haunt us. Colleges, employers and peers are always seeing the things that are open to the public, and sometimes individuals suffer from their own words. In this article Singer explains that the way social media is used in our society can have bad outcomes for the future of those that use social media. Admissions officials also said they had occasionally rejected applicants, or revoked their acceptances, because of online materials. Often, these officials said, a college may learn about a potential

problem from an outside source, such as a high school counselor or a graduate, prompting it to look into the matter. This article basically describes the trials that social media can bring into peoples lives if they are not careful how they use it. Some students may not be getting into the college they wanted because of the things they post, it should be a reminder to constantly be aware of what you are sharing with the entire world. This is applicable to my paper because the consequences can be bad based on what the individual posts and that often can have negative affects on students.

Wang, Z. "A Dynamic Longitudinal Examination of Social Media Use, Needs, and Gratifications among College Students." Computers in Human Behavior. British Library Serials, n.d. Web. Mar. 2014. Constantly using social media can be the cause of some other underlying problems. This study concludes that social media can and has become addicting to the generation that uses it the most. Social media use is significantly driven by all four categories of needs examined (emotional, cognitive, social, and habitual), but only gratifies some of them. Ungratified needs accumulate over time and drive subsequent social media use. The more that people long to use social media the more that they become addicted to it. The study delves deeper into why and how students and younger generations find social media to be so addicting. Based upon the reciprocal causality perspective, needs drive media use, which may fulfill all, part, or none of the needs; the changed needs lead users to adjust their subsequent media choice and use behavior. The generation can change how they view social media and what they expect to get from it in order to better their outcome socially, mentally and physically. When we think that we

are just getting on social media for certain reasons we may not realize that there are other reasons that we get on. Often our generation uses social media to make up for emotional and mental needs that are not being met in other areas of life. These can often have negative effects on the individuals and this is part of what causes the addiction that comes with social media. In this article I can clearly relate to a lot of what the author says about addiction and social media and would use a great deal of the information in my paper to clearly state the bad that comes from social media.

Rachel, I think you have found some really interesting and compelling research here. I especially like the discussion on social medias effects on education. I do think your thesis is a little too broad. You need to sharpen your focus, otherwise your paper will seem to scattered and pointless. Try to imagine your ideal audience. Then decide what your ultimate point will be. What do you want that audience to walk away thinking? What singular message are you attempting to communicate here? Otherwise good work.
